The paper attempts to determine whether an individual’s socio-economic dependence on the state in Russia translates into a higher propensity to turn out for elections and to vote for the ruling party or its candidate. It also explores the mechanisms employed by the state to mobilise dependent voters based on the case of two contrasting regions: Yaroslavl Oblast and the Republic of Tatarstan. The quantitative analysis carried out based on data coming from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey of the Higher School of Economics indicates a positive association between socio-economic dependence on the state and turnout in regard to sector and formal nature of employment, pensioner status and rural residence. At the same time, the results do not provide sufficient evidence to state that dependence on the state in these spheres makes people more likely to cast their votes for the ruling elites (with rural residence constituting an exception).

The last few years have witnessed a growing interest in both comic book and video game research. As new means of expression, a form of visual communication, and as cultural texts, these media are increasingly converging. This text looks at three types of overlapping areas between comics and video games: two types of games in the form of comics and the adaptation of a comic book to a game. The dominant research perspective in this text is comic studies. The games are analyzed in the light of the theory of comics and the definition of comics. The purpose of this analysis is to investigate tropes in these games at the stylistic and structural levels, and to identify semantic differences between a comic book and a game.

Nieodlącznym elementem badania biografii ludzi jest ukazanie, czy osiągneli w zyciu sukces i co ten sukces warunkuje. W ponizszym artykule podjeto probe przedstawienia, co kobiety z wojewodztwa podkarpackiego osiągające sukcesy w nauce, w biznesie i w polityce sądzą o determinantach powodzenia w zyciu oraz przyblizono sposoby definiowania pojecia „sukces”. Slowem sukces określamy najcześciej osiągniecia jednostki powiązane z jej aktywnością zawodową, spoleczną lub gospodarczą, ktore w opinii spolecznej jest dokonaniem ponad miare przecietności. Postrzeganie sukcesu wymaga rowniez sprecyzowania, jaki czynniki ulatwiają jego osiągniecie, a jakie bariery utrudniają jego odniesienie. Poglądy na ten temat dostarczają wiedzy o mentalności, strategiach zyciowych, a nawet zroznicowaniu spoleczenstwa.

The idea for this Special Issue actually originated during a conference devoted to gender equality in business settings: “It’s complicated. Gender balance in leadership” organized in 2018 by Diversity Hub, an organization focused on Diversity and Inclusion. Inspired by Professor Katarzyna Leszczyńska (AGH University of Science and Technology) and supported by Dr Tomasz Dąbrowski (Diversity Hub) the idea of an entire issue of an academic journal devoted to research and case studies on gender equality in science and business came to life. We opened the journal to sociologists, psychologists, cultural studies researchers, anthropologists, journalists and practitioners to share with us their work in this area. We received a broad variety of articles that tackled the notion from different perspectives and chose five articles that in our opinion provide the most interesting and professional contribution to the topic of gender representation in STEM and high business positions.

W artykule przedstawiono zjawisko grania wśród osób dojrzałych i starszych. W tym celu przeprowadzono w 2017 roku badanie w podejściu do wirtualnej etnografii, obejmujące dwa ważne fora internetowe dla graczy w wieku 25 lat i starszych: The Older Gamers (TOG) i Senior Gamers (SG). W sumie zakodowano zestaw 471 postów, co przełożyło się na pogłębiony opis pięciu istotnych aspektów praktyki grania wśród graczy 50+: ogólnych, na które składają się podstawowe cechy demograficzne użytkowników, ich nawyki, sprzęt używany do grania, kompetencje i wiedza związana z grami oraz rola środowiska społecznego, zwłaszcza rodziny, w rozwoju praktyki grania. Badanie to stanowi novum, ponieważ wykorzystuje podejście wirtualnej etnografii do zagadnienia sięgania po gry cyfrowe przez osoby starsze, ale także rozpoczyna dyskusję na ten temat w polskim dyskursie akademickim.

The article takes up the issue of ideological connections between the philosophy of man developed in the 15th century by the Cracovian masters from the Universitatis Cracoviensis and Cracovian Gothic art, above all the sculptures created by Veit Stoss in his Cracovian period. The German master-carver showed in his Cracovian Altarpiece a vast range of individual portrait-studies, realistic and naturalistic in character. During the Cracovian period some essential transformations took place in Veit Stoss’s oeuvre. He created naturalistic portrait-studies unknown in the European art of the time, depicting even pathological changes, such as cancerous skin lesions, which Stoss perceived on the human body. We have known – on the basis of archival sources – that Veit Stoss maintained friendly contacts with Jan of Głogów, author of the treatise Physionomia hincinde ex illustribus scriptoribus per venerabilem virum magistrum Joannem Glogoviensem diligentissime recol lecta, printed in Kraków in 1518. I wish to prove that the content of this treatise – including the issue of skin diseases – found its reflection in the art of one of the leading sculptors of the late medieval Europe.

Tasks undertaken by nascent entrepreneurs are oftentimes distant from their main scope of interest and skills. The question emerges whether the perception of those tasks infl uences the motivational processes of entrepreneurs and their work satisfaction. In this empirical study of nascent Polish entrepreneurs, we were able to observe that indeed in some cases the perception of the performed tasks moderates the relation between entrepreneurs’ motivation and work satisfaction. For example, among those entrepreneurs who assessed the educational value of performed tasks highly, the relation between intrinsic motivation and work satisfaction was positive. Those fi ndings are of signifi cant importance when it comes to supporting entrepreneurship activity. It is advised to be aware of factors infl uencing entrepreneurs’ motivation to work in order to sustain their productivity and engagement.

The West created two archetypes of Muslim. The fi rst is the East wise man, the hero of ́The Fairy Tales of 1001 nights’ (the historical realization was Saladyn). The second is dangerous, Freudian ‘uncanny’ (the Man of the Mountain or Osama bin Laden now). For me the attack on the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001 is the point of turn the imagological point of view on that archetypes. Both of types operated from Medieval on imagination of the West. They together created the view of Said’s Eastman. At the same time he is knowing, tamed and dangerous, ‘uncanny’ threat. The long time the West could see more the fi rst and act the East more ‘canny’ and dependent. 11/09 changed this perspective.
