The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the population of the countries of Latin America (LA) depends, to a large extent, on the public policies, and particularly on the health actions, that governments have adopted to confront the social and health crisis the pandemic has brought. Older people deserve special attention as one of the most vulnerable demographic groups to this infectious disease. The objectives of this work are: firstly, to examine the COVID-19 trend from confirmed cases and mortality due to this cause among older persons from a group of LA countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Uruguay) and Spain. Secondly, to explore actions and policies put in place in these countries to support older persons in particular, during the first wave of the pandemic.

Suicide is the most extreme manifestation of mental health care needs and the importance of reducing its occurrence has been underscored by the Sustainable Development Goals. The COVID-19 pandemic could increase suicide mortality due to its negative effects on living conditions. This paper analyzes suicide mortality in young men, adults, and older adults in eight Latin American and Caribbean countries between 2005 and 2015. Annual mortality rates are estimated for five age groups distinguished by life stages. The results show differences by country between age patterns and the trajectory of this cause of mortality. Uruguay shows the highest levels of suicide for all age groups analyzed along with Cuba for the elderly. Findings such as the ones reported in this study and other similar regarding the suicide trend in the Latin American and Caribbean region or the countries that comprise it, could serve as a point of reference to assess the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic for this mental health problem.

This work analyzes the health transition (HT) and the second demographic transition (SDT) processes in Argentina during the first decade of the current millennium. On the basis of specialized literature and official databases, this article proposes empirical indicators for the assessment of both transitions and examines the underlying links between them. Overall, 31 proxy indicators were selected and described for the 23 Argentine provinces and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. A hierarchical cluster analysis was developed, following the Ward method. Four clusters of Argentine jurisdictions were identified, and their distribution was spatially analyzed. The clusters presented different levels of progression in both transitions. The findings show that there is a socioeconomic gradient in the configuration of the clusters and that the synchronicity between the SDT and the HT is expressed at the social and space scale.

The main objective of this paper is to analyze the occupational segregation by gender and race, and its impact on the income gap in Brazil between 1986 and 2015. In this sense, we replicated five multigroup indexes developed by Del Rio e Alonso-Villar (2015). They present global and local measures that allow to decompose wage inequality. Through the timely segregation analysis, we observed that economic, social and political processes in these 29 years led to equal occupational structure and labor market in Brazil. In addition, we only studied workers who attended higher education, in the South and Southeast regions. Results point out to a decreasing occupational segregation, especially by gender, although heterogeneities by schooling and on wage definition (discrimination) have been found.

The theory of cumulative advantages and disadvantages (CAD) has rarely been used in the study of social inequality in Latin America. However, it is a key concept for understanding their everyday expressions, some of their causal mechanisms, and the needed policies to reduce it. With this goal in mind, the author explores the theoretical roots of this concept, identifies and analyzes different cumulative processes, and critically systematizes the Latin American literature on this subject. The conclusion makes an evaluation of this journey and develops some potential lines of future research from this perspective. The article is a contribution to the theoretical and empirical academic production on this topic in Latin America.

Male youth homicide is a growing phenomenon in Mexican urban suburbs. The aim of this article is to present certain correlations between the spatial distribution of male homicide and socioeconomic inequalities in municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants (Mexico City and Mexico State, 2000-2002 and 2010-2012). Through a cluster analysis, defined according to the characteristics of the population, male homicide (15 to 34 years) occurs at a higher rate in clusters with worse socioeconomic indicators. Homicide rates decreased in areas where rates were higher before and increased in the territorial units with better indicators, but the latter in a concentrated way among low- educated individuals. We conclude that since homicide particularly victimizes low income, young men, it deepens the inequalities and the relative disadvantages, which is corroborated with what Galtung (1990) calls the vicious triangle of violence.
