Phytotherapy an alternative to pest and disease control of bees 植物疗法是蜜蜂病虫害防治的一种替代方法

The honey bee ( Apis mellifera ) has been the most widely used bee due to its pollination and honey production capacities. Currently, beekeeping encompasses several health problems, which have drastically affected the populations of beehives in production. Among the diseases affecting bees are: American foulbrood, European foulbrood, limebrood, stonebrood, nosemiasis, acariosis and varroasis, among others. The Varroa destructor mite, which acts as a vector of different diseases and is recently associated with colony collapse syndrome. This mite affects bees during the phoretic and reproductive phase. However, the indiscriminate use of synthetic acaricides, in addition to having a harmful impact on the environment, affects the safety of products derived from the hive. In addition, they have originated resistance in V. destructor populations. This has forced the development of new strategies and treatment alternatives, such as the use of various plants native or endemic to the region (milling, extracts, oils and/or dehydrated powdered extracts). Plant essential oils are volatile aromatic compounds, mainly terpenoids, phenylpropanoids, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and alcohols, which have a wide range of antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, so the addition of essential oils of clove, eucalyptus, mint, rosemary, oregano and cinnamon can be beneficial in the apiary. The uses of these products can minimize production costs, encouraging producers to use these products.

Eimeria control in baby alpacas using toltrazuril as a prophylactic measure in humid Puna 托曲祖利防治湿润普纳地区羊驼幼羊艾美耳虫的研究

An effective concentration of toltrazuril to prophylactics in the control of eimerias and determine the prophylactic dose against eimerias species was evaluated in cria alpacas of the La Raya research center in Cusco Peru. Fifty cria alpacas of 3-4 months of age. distributed in 5 groups of 10 animals each: G 1 treated with 15 mg/kg of live weight (LW) of toltrazuril orally (VO), G 2 with 18.7 mg/kg BW/PO, G 3 with 22.5 mg/kg, G 4 with 30 mg/kg and G 5 without any dosage (control group). All dosage was given orally. Fecal analysis was performed using the modified McMaster technique at time 0 ad seven days later. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and a Fisher test was done to determine statistical significance. The results indicate that using toltrazuril 15 mg/kg BW and 18.7 mg/kg BW, only small species such as Eimeria punoensis E. alpacae and E. lamae are controlled, but not the large species ( E. macusaniensis ) and with 22.5 and 30 mg/kg LW, in addition to controlling small species, the elimination of E. macusaniensis oocysts is also significantly reduced (p≤0.05). It is concluded that the prophylactic doses to control eimerias in baby alpacas is 22.5 and 30 mg/kg BW, with a single oral application, which manages to control the four species registered in this work.

Suplementación de jengibre en codornices como alternativa nutricional en la producción y calidad de huevo 在鹌鹑中添加生姜作为蛋类生产和品质的营养替代品

Oscar Patricio Núñez-Torres E-mail address: op.nunez@uta.edu.ec In this study, the behavior of ginger flour (Zingiber officinale) was evaluated on the productive parameters during the first stage of laying in quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica), it was carried out in five phases distributed in weeks (phase one, 1 and 2, phase two, 3 and 4, phase three, 5 and 6, phase four 7 and 8 and phase five 9 and 10) of posture. The variables to be studied were: feed consumption (g) feed conversion, mortality, (%), percentage of laying (%), egg quality expressed in (egg weight (g) shell thickness (mm), resistance of shell (kgf), yolk coloration. A completely randomized design with four treatments and six repetitions was used, as well as an analysis of variance and Tukey's test at 5%. The treatments used were: T1, T2 and T3 T0 (control), were applied in doses of ginger flour of: 0%, 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.6% respectively. The statistical differences between T3 and the control group, determined that the flour favors the consumption of food, especially in the final phases of the study, (T1, T2 and T3) compared to the control group. Feed conversion shows significant differences with T2 in the intermediate production phases compared to the control. The percentage of laying does not present significant differences, in addition to the quality of the eggs improved notabl e mind. Regarding mortality, there were significant differences especially in T3 compared to the control since the birds showed resistance to diseases. In relation to profitability, the results of T3 were superior, with a CRB of 1.19. Concluding that the inclusion of ginger flour improves the productive parameters and the quality of the eggs

Evaluation of the short and long estrus synchronization protocol in inseminated sheep with frozen semen 冷冻精液授精绵羊短、长发情同步方案的评价

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of short (5 days) and long (9 days) SC protocols in ewes inseminated with frozen semen on the diameter of the uterine horn and pregnancy rate. The experiment was carried out at the Carolina Experimental Center, belonging to the National University of the Altiplano, and 40 ewes between Corriedale and Criollas were used; in groups of 20 for each treatment, which were synchronized with intravaginal sponges based on Medroxyprogesterone acetate, for 9 days (long protocol) and 5 days (short protocol) and at the time of sponge removal, 350 IU of eCG were applied. To measure the diameter of the uterine horn, ultrasonography was performed at 36 h post sponge removal and at 56 h after cervical insemination with thawed semen and a subsequent ultrasonography at 35 days to confirm gestation. Quantitative data were analyzed using the statistical t-test for uterine horn diameter and Chi-square for gestation rate. The results for uterine horn diameter were 11.11±1.52 and 12.12±2.12 mm for the short and long synchronization protocol, respectively. Regarding the pregnancy rate, 21.05 % and 25 % were obtained for the short and long synchronization protocol, respectively. Therefore, we can conclude that the long progesterone treatment had better results than the short treatment both in uterine diameter and pregnancy rate, but this difference was not significant (p>0.05).

The experiment was carried out at the Carolina Experimental Center, belonging to the National University of the Altiplano, and 40 ewes between Corriedale and Criollas were used; in groups of 20 for each treatment, which were synchronized with intravaginal sponges based on Medroxyprogesterone acetate, for 9 days (long protocol) and 5 days (short protocol) and at the time of sponge removal, 350 IU of eCG were applied. To measure the diameter of the uterine horn, ultrasonography was performed at 36 h post sponge removal and at 56 h after cervical insemination with thawed semen and a subsequent ultrasonography at 35 days to confirm gestation. Quantitative data were analyzed using the statistical t-test for uterine horn diameter and Chi-square for gestation rate. The results for uterine horn diameter were 11.11±1.52 and 12.12±2.12 mm for the short and long synchronization protocol, respectively. Regarding the pregnancy rate, 21.05 % and 25 % were obtained for the short and long synchronization protocol, respectively. Parámetros morfométricos del espermatozoide de alpaca (Vicugna pacos), obtenidos por tres métodos de colección 采用三种收集方法测定羊驼精子形态参数

Sperm morphology is essential in evaluating seminal quality and important for fertility prediction in breeding males. The aim of this study was to compare the morphometric parameters of alpaca sperm, collected using three methods of semen extraction, recovery of the vas deferens (DCD), electro ejaculation (EE) and vaginal aspira-tion (VA). The collection was made of 3 animals by each method. The mobility, concentration, vitality, mem-brane functionality and sperm morphometry parameters were determined in a computerized semen analysis kit – ISAS® CASA - Morph. For morphometric parameters, semen samples were processed with a Hemacolor® stain-ing kit and viewed under a phase-contrast microscope. For each sample, at least 200 sperm were captured at random, with an image resolution of 0.08 μm per pixel on the horizontal and vertical axes. The comparison of the morphometric parameters between the collection method and the animal was carried out using a random block design. Total motility was 16.27±11.96%, 14.68±11.21% and 12.44±7.27%; the sperm concentration of 247±186.70x106EPZ/mL, 67.92±67.92x106EPZ/mL and 100.32±56.13x106EPZ/mL, the vitality was 62.86 ±15.92%, 63±15.21% and 70.16±14.33% in sperm collected by DCD, EE and AV respectively. Regarding the morphometric parameters, a length of 5.49±0.43μm, 5.53±0.41μm and 5.75±0.53μm was found, area 14.30±2.00 μm2, 15.05±1.77 μm2 and 15.88±2.00 μm2, perimeter of 16.10±1.31μm, 17.11±1.20μm and 17.41 ± 1.43, width of 3.22±0.27μm, 3.30±0.32μm and 3.33±0.25μm and the acrosome percentage of 52.22±7.82μm, 49.52±7.47μm and 47.44±5.77μm in sperm collected by DCD, EE and AV respectively. The morphometric parameters of the size and shape of the sperm head and the intermediate piece showed significant statistical differences (p <0.01) between the collection methods and between the animals. In conclusion, the morphometric parameters of alpaca spermatozoa were influenced by collection method, and show variations between animals.
