The paper focuses on the equivalence of person deixis in the translation of the World Health Organization (WHO) institutional discourse in the context of COVID 19. Accordingly, the aim of the paper is twofold: to detect the linguistic and cultural gaps between the source text in English and the target text in Romanian with respect to the conceptualization and grammatical encoding of person deixis, and to determine the optimal, context-sensitive equivalents in translation. Our assumption is that, given the text type and the supranational identity of the text producer (WHO), the optimal equivalents will be based on cultural symmetry.

This paper presents the results of a qualitative study conducted between April and July 2020, aiming to identify the new trends in the communication process between social workers and beneficiaries, social workers and colleagues in multidisciplinary team, as well as among social workers and other specialists from public and/or private institutions in Timiş County (Romania), specific to the COVID-19 pandemic. The research method used was the semi-structured interview addressed to 23 social workers in Timiş County. The main results of the study revealed certain communication barriers during the state of emergency between social workers and other social actors with which they interacted, as well as new adaptation strategies in the communication process.

The current paper aims to analyse the main features and the limitations of the online automatic subtitling platforms. Based on different applications such as: video-to-text transcription programs, machine translation programs, and text segmenters, automatic subtitling involves a complex workflow and is meant to enhance the productivity of the professional subtitler. There are very few studies about the online subtitling platforms, therefore, the analysis we carried on will provide comprehensive empirical data and will contribute to a better knowledge of these innovative systems.

The traditional folkloric substratum of different cultures and the mythological one are still very noticeable nowadays, and the modern person cannot disregard them, as they are intensely reinterpreted, reimagined, and promoted in a vast array of fantasy books, fantasy films, etc. The protagonists of fantasy culture are the imaginary, supernatural, magical, demonic beings, the totemic animals, the fantastic objects, etc. In relevant literature they are defined as mythemes. Moreover, another present-day function was assigned to folkloric, mythological elements (the mythemes) through their animated metamorphosis into the realm of video games, already being annotated, listed online. The present paper aims to emphasise the role of realia-mythemes in traditional and current culture on one hand, and on the other hand to present a series of means of conveying, mainly in Romanian, the fantasy (i.e., folkloric, mythological) realia-words with Russian cultural characteristics (cf. Ба́ба-Яга́ [Ro Baba-Iaga], [En BabaYaga/Jaga]; Богаты́рь [Ro bogatîri], [En bogatyr]; Васили́са Премудрая [Ro Vasilisa Premudraia], [En Vasilisa Premudraya]; Жар-пти́цa [Ro jar-ptița], [En zhar-ptitsa]; Русáлка [Ro rusalca], [En rusalka], etc.). The transfer of realia elements constitutes a complex process that has been drawing the attention of researchers for a long time, especially since there is no “sole” translation solution, and the “ideal” rendering of these units is performed by considering certain intra- and extralinguistic, intra- and extra-translational aspects.

Meteorology is an important science which has constantly evolved in the last centuries, as people became more and more aware of the importance of understanding meteorological conditions and predicting the weather, as well. An analysis of existing studies in meteorology reveals that this field received little or no attention from language or communication perspectives, although we believe it is essential for both specialists and different types of audience to send and understand messages easily and take action accordingly. The aim of this paper is to present a state-of-the-art analysis of different language and communication approaches to meteorology, and to come up with a series of recommendations on possible directions of research in the field.

The need for translation in a world of continuous change and exchange is unquestionable. Literary translation creates global communication and engages the readership’s interest in raising cultural awareness. This cultural landscape provides new perspectives on literary translation which might be regarded as a model for all translation types and for conveying messages across cultures and language barriers. Literary translators become professional rewriters and mediating agents in an intricate process of mapping literatures and cultures. The paper equally envisages the literary translators’ active and dynamic roles as well as the negative consequences of the digitalized era on translators’ profession and professionalization.

The purpose of this paper is to review research regarding the possibilities of using machine translation in order to translate literary texts. Based on previous research, the paper will look at problems that were identified, related to the lexical, structural and pragmatic levels, analysing reasons for these errors. The paper will draw a comparison between machine translation and human translation in terms of cognitive understanding and accuracy of interpretation of literary texts. Features of literary texts will also be taken into account in order to draw the appropriate conclusions of human and machine translator possibilities of understanding these texts.

The language industry, including translation services, grew significantly in the last decade in Romania, as well. To cope with increasing and competing market demands, both independent and in-house translators must produce quality translations and focus on volume, speed, and efficiency at the same time. An efficient translation process allows companies to achieve their objectives with the minimum amount of time, money, people, or other resources. For companies, this means maximizing the use of resources with reduced or optimum costs. To be successful, we recommend each translation business to consider developing, including, using, and continually adapting in their daily activities a translation flow, which may differ in complexity depending on the size of the translation project or company.

This installment deals with the benefits translation activities have on vocabulary acquisition in ESP when properly implemented in the classroom. The conclusions are based on empirical observations and on the previous research which included a case study regarding learners’ attitudes towards this type of activity.
