This paper aims at investigating how student subtitlers practice making subtitle of “Ambilkan Bulan” movie from Indonesian into English. This subtitling project is expected to help students sharpen their translation skills while learning linguistic and cultural aspects of both Indonesian as the source language (SL) and English as the target language (TL) in this study. In addition, students are also expected to have more practices on the technical aspects of subtitle to convey the message in the limited time and space by applying existing subtitle software. The data of this study were taken from students’ translations in Subtitling class. The data were analyzed descriptively to identify the strategy used by students based on Gottlieb's ten subtitle strategies and the technical constraints they commonly faced in making the subtitle. The results of this study indicate that students generally apply all of these strategies with varying frequencies and linguistics-related problems. Transcription strategy is the most frequent strategy applied by the students. This study also shows that students still struggle with the technical aspects related to cueing duration, rhythm, and division of subtitle which are sometimes less synchronous and eventually distracted viewers’ convenience

Based on a cross-cultural perspective, the current study aims to compare the realization of the speech act of compliments among Yemeni Arabic native speakers (YANSs) and American English native speakers (AENSs). Samples of 30 participants of Americans and 30 other participants of Yemenis were involved in the study. The data were collected through a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) consisting of six hypothetical compliment scenarios. The corpus collected for analysis was 380 Arabic compliment semantic formulas and 338 English compliment semantic formulas. Data were analyzed in terms of frequency counts of 20 strategies and order of semantic formulas in the speakers' response utterances. The findings showed that there are some pragmatic similarities and differences between the two native groups. Some strategies seemed to be universal across the two cultures like Admiration whereas strategies of Exaggeration, Gratitude to God and Metaphor are culturally specific to Arabic. The findings also revealed that most of the speakers' utterances were in the two-fold order of semantic formulas. Moreover, the findings showed that American compliments were steady and formulaic in nature while Arabic Compliments were various in formulas and long.

This study discusses Joko Widodo’s utterance in several moments. Jokowi is the president of the Indonesian Republic. He would like to participate in the reelection of the presidential election in April 2019. Many statements of him make public perceptions appear different. In this case, there is two big points of research that can be famous dictions in this era. ‘sontoloyo’ and ‘genderuwo’ are two interesting dictions to discuss. As a popular person, Jokowi’s utterances occur as public discourses. Many perspectives are produced by many analysts in multidiscipline views. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is used as a framework to analyze the utterances related to many perspectives of language. Fairclough model is a choice for analyzing in depth of the research. It states in three big points; text analysis (description), processing analysis (interpretation) andsocial analysis (explanation). The researcher uses a qualitative method. The data related with the sontoloyo and genderuwo utterance comes from news online the Jakarta Post. By using Fairclough theory, the researcher explains the text in the relationship with the situation of political moment, the speaker as government and candidate of the presidential election. The text gives many interpretation and relationship with the social condition.

Students’ challenging behavior becomes one of the big issues in education nowadays and language education is not an exception. Therefore, preparing teachers insight towards the issue is essential as the first step to prevent the issue grows in the future. Positive Behavior Support appears as one of the solutions to this issue in developing countries such as Australia and Singapore in 2011. Supporting this system, the researcher perceived that it is vital to apply this system in the EFL classroom in Indonesia. This paper aims to investigate the instructors’ Reflection using Positive Behavior Support (PBS) in EFL classroom. The research used qualitative study and involved 3 instructors in an institution which applies EFL teaching as the program, also conducted an interview after the workshop and teaching to find more detail information in the data obtained. The finding of the study indicated that PBS in form of workshop positively supported the instructors’ teaching application when they were experiencing real teaching class situation using the support system. The instructors also perceived that having PBS workshop added their knowledge to support students’ behavior in their classroom and in the future positively. Unfortunately, two instructors denoted that they could not apply all the PBS parts in their teaching application since most of the students are adult learners. However, the instructors reported that through the workshop and teaching period they perceived a change in students’ positive behavior and PBS changes their paradigm toward teaching management system.

This study aims to obtain information related to the forms and the uses of linkages adjacency pair of 'question-answer' used in Ayat-Ayat Cinta, as well as understand the function of the adjacent pair in establishing the integrity of the novel discourse. This study is a qualitative study which is operationally using the principles of speech act study. The speech act referred in this study is a dialogue in the novel which becomes the data source of this research. Data was collected by the following procedure: (1) to identify the overall dialogue in the novel; Ayat-Ayat Cinta; (2) to determine the adjacent pair in the form of "questions-answers."; (3) to find the forms and the links between each pair of utterances focused on "question-answer” type. The research findings indicate that the adjacent pairs of "question-answer" are found in the following forms: (1) short sentences; (2) ellipsis (3) deep structure; and (4) informal language (slang). The function of the adjacency pairs of "question-answer" in this novel are as controlling the integrity of discourse, namely (1) to express pleasure/choice of the characters; (2) to explain the identity, background and character of the characters; and (3) to reveal the history of the past of the characters.

Humor is important among educators to refresh their mind from busy work, strengthen friendship and interpersonal relationship, create happiness, and to improve working performance and cooperation of both personal and professional matters. This study aims to examine the humor in the perspective of linguistics and psychology, especially the semantic aspect among colleagues of lecturers in Islamic universities of Indonesia. A qualitative-descriptive method was employed to analyze data which were collected through participants’ observation and in-depth interview. The results indicate that to create humor from a linguistic perspective, lecturers used polysemy and homonym aspects as part of the language game. Polysemy is only a word while homonym is a word, abbreviation, and acronym. The words that indicate polysemy is margacinta, hawa, and kopi, while the words that indicate homonyms in the form of words maroko, farj, and tabrakan. On the other hand, the abbreviation homonymy is found in the phrases of peraturan pemerintah and pembimbing akademik and the acronyms are found in words akper, jatol, jaka, marisa and jelita. This language game then creates a joyful atmosphere among lecturers which ultimately affects their interpersonal relationships. The proximity of interpersonal relations also has implications for better employment relations and increased productivity to do works assigned to them. Finally, this research confirms that language games such as polysemy and homonymy can also be used to create humor aimed not only to refresh mind but also to create happiness and improve work performance to increase productivity in universities. Keywords: Humor, happiness, relationship, lecturer, Islamic Higher Education.

Language and cognition are interdependent elements which are currently relevant to second language acquisition issues. Learners will simultaneously acquire the thinking rhetoric carried out by a target language once they acquire the language itself. The externalization of the cognitive process can be seen from learner’s writing product or speaking performance that have been greatly investigated by numbers of researchers. The proposed problem was what happened to multilingual learner’s thinking rhetoric. Did they easily change between one language rhetorical styles to another? Or, their cognitive control mechanism was just intersected? This study aims at reviewing the concept of multilingual learner’s thinking rhetoric along with their externalizations. It is expected that this study contributes to unlocking the dilemma of learners’ cognitive problems when acquiring multilanguage and initiating further research concerning how to handle multilingual learners’ language rhetorical styles.

Writing in second language is demanding that leads learners to make errors in their performance. Fortunately, the view of error has changed into a way of understanding second language acquisition and its practice. Error analysis is an approach of SLA to learn the errors made by the second language learners. However, knowing the errors made is not enough, therefore, it is important to see the factors beyond the errors. This present study aims at knowing what writing errors the learners make and what the most common error occurs are. Furthermore, this study explored what factor lies beyond those errors. Through mixed method design as well as Error Analysis (EA) approach, this study was conducted in one learning course in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia. Through this study, it was revealed that omission was the type of error mostly made. Furthermore, intralingual and interlingual factors were the ones beyond the errors. It is expected that this study will contribute to the knowledge and practice on the fields of not only Second Language Acquisition (SLA) but also English Language Teaching (ELT) involving teachers and students.

The method of memorizing the vocabulary is one of the educational methods in teaching Arabic in the Madrasah Tanwir al-Tsanawiyah al-Islamiyah Talun Sumberrejo Bojonegoro East Java. The activities of teaching students to memorize certain vocabulary under the supervision and guidance of the teacher, then given the task of memorizing the vocabulary in a certain period of time. The student pretended to memorize the vocabularies in front of the teacher temporarily or non-temporary depend on the desire of the teacher. It helps students to answer the question about the lesson on the Arabic language during the exam. So, students compete to learn Arabic in order to get the results fully in the lesson. Students return with training to memorize vocabularies. This method will make it easier for students to learn four language skills so that the Arabic language can be embodied and united in them. Problems in the implementation of the way to memorize the vocabulary is the teachers felt difficulty to apply the method of keeping vocabulary because of the difference in the ability of pupils in compositing of sentences of the vocabulary they memorized. Students feel difficulty writing the vocabulary they memorized than students feel heavy punishment. As the solution of the problems, the teacher should teach the Arabic language patiently and understand the conditions of the students, take care of the process of teaching, take the time to give greater attention to students with weak memory, give the students a lot of motivation to be active in learning and help students memorize and arrange the correct sentences, also to train students in writing the vocabulary repeatedly to read the vocabulary and order them to write.
