The article reveals the life and activities of the Talantsevs merchants family in the pre-revolutionary Chuvashia. At the end of the 19th — beginning of the 20th century, along with entrepreneurship and commercial activities, the Talantsev brothers were also engaged in charity. Unlike many other merchants, who proved themselves primarily as benefactors in the development of temple construction and public charity facilities of religious type, members of the Talantsev family distinguished themselves in the enlightenment direction — in the construction of schools, hospitals, libraries, cultural and educational institutions in multinational Chuvashia, in the organization of agriculture and household life, in preservation and further development of the ethnoculture of Russian and Chuvash peoples. The Talantsevs were particularly active in promoting secular culture and books among the population. That was clearly expressed in their participation in the development of public, factory and private family libraries. The partially preserved library of the Talantsev brothers, located since 1954 in the structure of the National Library of the Chuvash Republic, is a rare example of the noble service of representatives of the merchants of Chuvashia to book culture, enlightenment and preservation of the ethnoculture of the peoples of the Middle Volga region. The historical experience and traditions of merchant families in organizing charity in the field of culture, interrupted in October 1917 and partially revived in the practice of modern entrepreneurs, can now be used in the educational process in all types of educational institutions, taking into account modern realities.

Basing on the new sources from the Archives of the Russian State Library (RSL), the author reconstructed the insufficiently yet studied and comprehended mechanism of adaptation of Russian nobles to Soviet reality, which is one of the main problems of the social history of the early post-revolutionary years. For the first time in historiography, the paper analyses the work of four representatives of the Arsenyevs family (diplomat, former Russian ambassador to Norway Sergey Vasilyevich, genealogist and archaeographer Vasily Sergeevich, literary critic Sergey Ivanovich and his wife Elizabeth Nikolaevna) in the Library of the State Rumyantsev Museum (since February 6, 1925 — V.I. Lenin State Library of the USSR, nowadays — RSL) in late 1910s — early 1930s. The article introduces into scientific circulation the documents of personal files from the Archives of the RSL. The author shows how nepotism and mutual assistance of members of the noble family helped to overcome the consequences of official sociocide. Two of the Arsenievs got the job at the Library of the State Rumyantsev Museum almost simultaneously — in the spring of 1919: difficult material conditions forced representatives of the former elite to look for new means of livelihood. In library work, the experience of research in the humanities and knowledge of foreign languages were in demand, but successful and long-term activities of family members in the Library were hindered by the repressions carried out after 1917 on social grounds.Personal files from the Archives of the RSL make it possible to reconstruct the process of the Arsenievsʼ employment in the Library and the details of their work activities, to find out the degree of reliability and novelty of the information of the sources introduced into scientific circulation. The author shows that an important aspect of the problem is the analysis of the degree of distortion in the documents of biographical information necessary for the identity of candidates to be acceptable to the Soviet institution. The official persecution of the nobility led to the appearance in the Library of the State Rumyantsev Museum (later — V.I. Lenin State Library of the USSR) of new employees with extensive knowledge in various humanities, who spoke languages and had organizational skills. They contributed to the development of the State Rumyantsev Museum and later V.I. Lenin State Library of the USSR as a major scientific centre.

The article is devoted to self-service libraries and self-service elements in libraries. The aim of the work is to determine the place and role of self-service libraries in the complex system of libraries in the modern society. The author describes various aspects of the use of automated self-service systems and digital technologies in the activities of libraries. The paper analyses the reasons that encourage libraries to switch to self-servicing. The introduction of this form of service is considered as an opportunity to increase the efficiency of the staff work, to free up time for creative activity previously spent on routine processes. The author gives examples of the use of automated self-service systems in libraries. During self-service hours, library users independently receive and hand over books using automatic book distribution stations, library book vending machines. With the help of self-service systems, librarians keep statistics of library visits, identify the most popular books, create lists of readers delaying the return of books, etc. The author analyses the problems faced by librarians working under the system of full or partial self-service. Abroad, the massive introduction of self-service elements in libraries has caused an ambiguous reaction from library staff. Many of them took the innovation as a reason to reduce the number of library staff. Such fears are groundless, since the functions of library specialists are not limited to the issuance of books. The scope of their professional activity is much wider, and knowledge, skills and experience are indispensable when qualified intellectual assistance is required. In the age of digital technologies, self-service in libraries is becoming an integral element of creating a comfortable environment for readers. At the same time, readers still need the help of library staff. Automated self-service systems have a rich potential, if traditional library values are preserved.

G. L. Levin
One of the priority areas of the research activity of the Russian State Library (RSL), in particular its scientific bibliographic activity, is currently the study “Information and bibliographic activity of Russian libraries (theoretical and practical aspects)”. Relevance of the research is caused by the fact that information and bibliographic activity refers to the main activities of libraries of various types and kinds. Libraries create bibliographic information for wide distribution, provide bibliographic services to their readers (subscribers). Bibliographic information is also used in various particular library processes (acquisition, library and information services, organization of mass events, etc.). The article considers the results of the analysis of the R&D object — bibliographic (information and bibliographic) activity of libraries as a system object (essence, boundaries, objects and subjects of activity, internal structure, etc.). The analysis was carried out on the basis of theoretical concepts developed by the domestic bibliography science, as well as the modern terminological system of the library and information sphere, fixed in national standards. The author identified and analysed the main directions of bibliographic activity in the library (library bibliography): bibliographic processing of library collections (library bibliographic cataloguing); formation of reference and bibliographic tool; creation of bibliographic resources and products of “non-catalogue” type (indexes, lists, reviews, etc.); bibliographic service; bibliographic education; scientific and methodological activities in the field of bibliography.

Yu. B. Alieva
The article presents the brief description of freely available selected digital music collections of the national and largest public libraries of German-speaking countries: Austria, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland. The author studies the main stages of the historical formation of musical culture in the German-speaking environment, chronologically correlated with the brilliant names of composers, founders and recognized authorities of the classical music school. As an illustrative material, the author gives diagrams with quantitative characteristics of the distribution of digital content by the types and quantity of documents, as well as personalities of composers. The paper provides current links to resources and thematic portals created by libraries within the framework of sectoral collaboration.National and major public libraries collect and store documentary heritage, including musical collections, which differ by the type diversity of documents. Digital collections generated by libraries based on their own priorities and technical capabilities contribute to the physical preservation of documents. Digital music collections act as promoters of the great heritage of the classical music school, which has received recognition on the world musical Olympus. For the first time, the paper considers the combined heritage of the classical music school of the national and the largest German-language libraries of free access. Thanks to modern technologies of document digitisation, the use of thermographic camera (for reproducing filigree signs), creation of comfortable interface in language understandable to user, libraries expand the audience of researchers, going beyond the country, contribute to conducting scientific research in a remote format. Libraries are becoming a progressive, democratic platform and an equal partner of the world scientific community and at the same time receive additional funding for the implementation of the next ambitious projects.

The article discusses the monograph of E.P. Pirogova, dedicated to the reconstruction of the private library of the Ural owner of mines A.F. Turchaninov (1704—1787). The monograph is based on the unique source — the detailed inventory of property compiled in 1789. The document allowed to create the catalog of the Russian part of the collection and the review of foreign books. The monograph also includes the archaeographic publication of inventory materials related to the books and other printed products. The author of the monograph introduced into scientific circulation the detailed information about one of the largest private libraries in Russia in the second half of the 18th century and probably the most significant in the Urals in that historical period. It allows us to refute the existing view in historiography about the ceremonial nature of A.F. Turchaninovʼs book collection. Now the owner of mines and metallurgical works can be considered as an active and thoughtful collector of books and user of his own library, familiar with the cultural practices of the Era of Enlightenment.
Turchaninov(1704-1787)的私人图书馆。

The article reveals previously unknown facts about the sinologist Sergei Alexandrovich Polevoy (1886—1971), who became famous due to his scientific, pedagogical and social activities in China. Being a native of dynasty that gave the world talented literary critics, writers and journalists, Polevoy from his youth was passionate about literature and collecting books alongside learning about China. His first academic work, prepared as a graduation paper at the Oriental Institute (Vladivostok), was devoted to periodicals in China; and his unique library composed of literature in many languages originated from the books on Oriental studies and linguistics. Living in China since 1917, Polevoy was a professor at Nankai University in Tianjin (since 1918) and then Peking University (since 1921), where he taught Chinese students the Russian language and literature. Using the introduction to Russian culture and literature as a new method of teaching, he brought up some famous Chinese writers and translators. His bookstore, opened in Beijing and having contacts with the International Book Company in Moscow, became a cultural bridge between Russia and China. Using the bookstore, Polevoy supplied Chinese students with textbooks and Russian classical literature, replenished the department of Slavic literature at the Beijing National Library, distributed Marxist literature and helped Chinese communist leaders establish contacts with the USSR. The authors also report the facts on the biography of Polevoyʼs son, Leonid, thanks to whom the Oriental Institute of the Far Eastern Federal University (Vladivostok) received the manuscript of S. Polevoy’s English-Chinese dictionary and his other materials on oriental studies. Leonid also presented his father’s book collection to Irkutsk, and these books served as the basis of the Humanitarian Centre — Library named after the Polevoys’ family. The article is based on materials from the Polevoys’ family archives and other private collections abroad.
