Introduction: Aim of the study was to examine the occurrence of kissing molars from the nationwide Health 2000 Survey carried out on the Finnish adult population aged 30 years and older. Kissing molars refer to impaction of a mandibular third molar and a neighboring molar with occlusal surfaces facing towards each other. At present, prevalence of kissing molars at a national level is unknown. Methods and materials: From the two-staged stratified cluster-sample of 8028 subjects, panoramic radiographs and clinical oral examinations were carried out for 5989 subjects (46% men, 54% women; mean age 52.5 years; SD 14.6; range 30‒97). Radiographs were examined for presence of third molars and kissing molars. Clinical measurements included total number of clinically visible teeth and total number of molars. From the demographic data, age, gender, place of residence, and level of education were included. Statistical significances were evaluated with Fisher’s exact test and Mann-Whitney U test. SAS Callable SUDAAN software was used to obtain weighted distributions of kissing molars representative of the population aged 30 years and older, and separately of people with third molars. Results: Kissing molars occurred in 0.05% of the adult population (5 per 10000 adult inhabitants) and in 0.1% of those subjects with third molars (10 per 10000 such subjects). In subjects with kissing molars, the mean numbers of clinically visible teeth (p = 0.021) and molars (p = 0.016) were smaller compared to those without kissing molars. The demographic features analyzed, showed no statistically significant association with the occurrence of kissing molars. Conclusion: This is the first study published to date on the prevalence of kissing molars at the population level. The prevalence of kissing molars in the population was very small. For the sake of comparison, kissing molars are not seen as often as supernumerary teeth in third molar region.

Introduction: There are so many methods for measuring caries disease in populations that it is a great challenge for researchers and epidemiologists to choose which one is most appropriate for their research or surveys. Objective: to make a discussion about the difficulties in measuring caries disease in populations using scientific articles that contributed to the reflection on the subject. Conclusion: Due to the importance of the issue a careful analysis of the literature is necessary to decide which method should be used to measure caries disease in the populations.

Treatment of periodontal diseases is becoming more prevalent and one of the treatment methods is to regenerate periodontal tissues. Over the period many biomaterials have been developed many of which are currently being used and more research is still in progress. Such a range of biomaterials choice makes it a challenging ordeal for Dentists to weigh the pros and cons of the popular biomaterials. This manuscript attempts to be a comprehensive document that discusses the merits and demerits of various biomaterials to aid in the decision making of biomaterial choice for periodontal disease treatments.

Age is one of the essential factors in establishing the identity of the person. It plays an important role in forensic medicine, clinical dentistry and archaeology. Age estimation is crucial in medico legal cases and importance in forensic medicine, not only for identifying deceased victims but also in connection with crimes and accidents. Age estimation of unknown human bodies is very important in the setting of a crime investigation as well as mass disaster. The age for the individual can be assessed as skeletal, morphological, secondary sex character and dental age.This paper reviews various dental age estimation methods that have been used by the scientist in order to help the identification of remains.

The growing aesthetic demands of patients have led to the development of different types of all-ceramic crowns. Y-TZP zirconia-based restorations with feldspathic ceramic guarantee more satisfaction in terms of mimicry and biocompatibility than the metal-ceramic crowns. However, the bond at the zirconia and veneered porcelain interface seems to be the weakest link in this type of restoration. Indeed, numerous cases of interfacial decohesion of the cosmetic ceramic have been reported. For this purpose, numerous scientific studies have been carried out to further explore and accurately describe the characteristics of the interface at these two ceramics in order to strengthen the bond of bilayered ceramics.

A good oral health education program starts from early ages, and the most important time to initiate this it is when the first permanent tooth (the first permanent molar) erupts, and it lies on a correct diet and hygiene habits, including a healthy diet, a correct brushing technique, and a preventive therapeutic approach. The beneficial effect of a preventive program is a good oral health and the therapeutic approach is the dental sealing. Of course it is important to motivate small patients to maintain a good oral health, through the correct use of oral hygiene products, individual brushing techniques, and good eating habits. The prevention programs and the children’s receptiveness in maintaining proper oral hygiene can improve the oral health. If there is good communication between the physician and the patient then we can talk about the triad: theoretical presentation, practical exercises and individual biofilm removal techniques, which are indispensable factors in achieving an appropriate oral health status. When dental education programs can’t provide the proper prophylaxis of caries lesion, especially at the occlusal surfaces of molars and premolars with deep and retentive pits and grooves, dental sealing is an ideal option.

Segmented Le Fort I osteotomy is a surgical procedure which allows the posterior segments to be repositioned more coronally to close an open bite, as well as correcting transverse discrepancies. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the prevalence of injuries to teeth and surrounding hard tissues in patients who had undergone the Le Fort I osteotomy procedure with maxillary segmentation. In total, 101 patients were included according to predetermined criteria. Radiographs from the 6-month postoperative follow-up were reviewed in all patients. Complications such as root fractures, root resorptions, periodontal defects, sclerotic and osteolytic processes were noted. Intraoral periapical radiographs were primarily reviewed and where unavailable, panoramic radiographs were instead used. In addition, preoperative and postoperative radiographs up to 30 months were reviewed in patients with found radiographic changes at 6 months. In cases with root fracture, the medical record was reviewed in search of any additional treatment. Seven root fractures were noted in total. Only one tooth required replacement, in this case with a dental implant. Clinically significant complications to teeth adjacent to vertical osteotomies from the Le Fort I osteotomy with maxillary segmentation were uncommon.

Gender Dentistry A Systematic Review of Literature on Caries And Periodontitis 性别牙科:关于龋齿和牙周炎的文献系统综述

Already in the 1980s, the World Health Organization (WHO) has postulated to analyze in all medical fields differences between the sexes. But until now there is a disturbing lack of scientifically based and meaningful data over the whole area of gender dentistry – for prevention as well as for treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the actual situation described as an IS-analysis of literature review on the topic of gender dentistry with the subthemes periodontal disease and tooth decay in the leading medical databases (Medline, Embase, BIOSIS Previews, Your Journals@Ovid, The Cochrane Library). We discuss these on the basis of an evidence-based guideline. For periodontal diseases we found no clear trend. Some studies showed no gender difference, others showed a higher prevalence for women or a higher prevalence for men. At the juvenile periodontitis and the occurring bacteria of periodontitis there were conflicting results as well. No simple statement can be made with respect to tooth decay, too. Respective studies merely show age as an important item. Totally it has to be noted that the scientific validity of some studies is not without any doubt as they are conducted with a too low number of clinical trials. Several studies are more than 15 years old, therefor providing a serious gender specific treatment in dentistry, future studies must increasingly incorporate and intensively discuss gender specific aspects.

Several studies are more than 15 years old, therefor providing a serious gender specific treatment in dentistry, future studies must increasingly incorporate and intensively discuss gender specific aspects.","PeriodicalId":326702,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dental and Maxillofacial Research","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115877840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Introduction: This study was conducted to find out different polishing techniques’ effects on different porcelain materials by using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Material and Methods: Samples were made from four different porcelain materials (VMK 95, Ceramco III, Matchmaker, Vitablocs Mark II). Nine groups (n = 5) were randomly formed from the samples of each ceramic and nine different polishing methods were applied on them. AFM was used to evaluate the external topography and roughness of dental porcelains. To analyze the results of the study ANOVA and Tukey test were used statistically ( = 0.05). Results: Within the porcelain groups Ceramco and Matchmaker had higher Ra values, however VMK 95 and Mark II had lower Ra values. However when the different polishing techniques were compared, Gl (.1110) and SlPg (.2295) were found to have the lowest Ra values and no statistical differences were found between these two techniques (p > .05). In addition, no differences were found between glazed samples (Gl) and after polishing with Sof-lex and Prisma Gloss (Sl-Pg). On the other hand polishing with Sl and Pg together (Sl-Pg) significantly decreases the surface area. Conclusions: There were statistically significance between the glazed and the other specimens. Different polishing methods influenced the surface topography of different porcelains significantly ( p < .001).
