The paper addresses two questions related to educational multimedia applications: (a) what lessons should we learn from today's graphical user interfaces (GUIs)?, and (b) what should the user interfaces should look like in the future? We address the first question by drawing on our experience from two multimedia projects, that deal with multimedia proceedings and multimedia lectures. For the second question, we criticize the directions that today's research for 3D and VR GUIs is going, and we argue that they may not necessarily be on the way to the optimum user interface, which is none, and we describe an alternative path.

The broad objective of the project was to use computer aided tutorials (in addition to conventional tutorials) to improve learning and assessment in fluid mechanics for civil engineering students studying open channel flow. In particular, the computer aided tutorials are intended to correct common student misconceptions and ensure that students have prerequisite knowledge. students are also able to develop problem solving skills.

This paper offers insight into the power of multimedia to deliver information which caters to a particular audience. The role of the design features and the moulding of those features through a knowledge of the target audience, are discussed as essential elements in the delivery of information through multimedia. The development process has been traced, to provide insight into the software so that the effectiveness of the software can be judged using Reeves (1994) dimensions for interactive learning systems.

An interactive multimedia learning environment is being proposed for development as a learning/teaching aid for electronics engineering students. Hypertext, audio and video will be utilised to best present the material in an effective, enjoyable, animated and dynamic manner. Lecture material, laboratory notes and tutorial examples will be included. The authoring tools utilised will include either Authorware or Netscape, leaving open the possibility of creating a World Wide Web application accessible to both full time and part time students. Student assistance will be sought during development, with hypertext linkages within any given subject, as well as between subjects.

Maple and the World-Wide Web have been integrated to deliver Maple worksheets to students studying mathematics service subjects at RMIT. Simulated, Adobe acrobat and interactive versions of the worksheets are available on the World-Wide Web. Printed versions of the material have been published in the series "RMIT Lecture Notes in Mathematics". Electronic mail has been successfully used to submit assignments.

The authors share their experience and ideas about what multimedia and hypermedia technology can bring to law students, in particular about learning contractual techniques. More specifically, they present the way these techniques are used and will be used in developing a databank on international contractual clauses for training students in the law of international commercial transactions and in contractual techniques.

A teaching project is being developed with the aim of enabling students to quickly develop their own simulation models of water based eco-systems without the need to write computer programs. The vehicle for this is the commercial software MATLAB and SIMULINK. Initially, the method is being applied to model dissolved oxygen and BOD in a water body receiving a waste discharge. Simulations can include reaeration, nitrification, photosynthesis and respiration. Students are supplied with field data and their task is to identify the dominant processes, configure an appropriate model, select values for the kinetic constants and carry out model runs.

The introduction of multimedia as a tool to aid teaching has opened up interesting areas for research. Some of the concerns include the use of screen displayed materials, how the machine communicates with users and how efficiently users learn from the system. In this project we focus on supporting laboratory work. Also, the system is designed for a bilingual presentation which can be tailored for the special environment of Hong Kong. This paper investigates the basic techniques used to build the system.

The trend towards multimedia in education is exemplified by the growing number of "multimedia ready" classrooms. The paper illustrates the process and techniques used for developing such a multimedia courseware. Additionally, this courseware employs sound instructional and learning strategies; thereby making the courseware not only educational, but also captivating. The other unique feature of the courseware is its adaptability. Any teacher who is familiar with the basic Windows technique will be able to add/modify the contents by using the "Teachers' Module". Moreover, this courseware can be easily translated to other languages, for example Chinese.
