The design of steel structures involves several stages and procedures and a quick review is needed so that a feel for the way the code is written is obtained. A pilot study dealt with attempting to present rather complex Australian Standard AS4100-1990, steel structures design code to a variety of users of different levels of understanding. This paper reports on progress made since then and demonstrates the CD-ROM based material developed to date.

Multimedia technology has made very significant advances in the last ten years. However, the extent to which its introduction in the classroom has progressed has been constrained by several internal problems as well as factors external to the teaching institution. In Victoria (Australia), a group of universities in collaboration with the government are studying such issues related to the introduction of multimedia in education. At the university department level, a variety of 'internal' management, staff and student related issues and problems do exist. The paper addresses some of these and attempts to suggest guidelines for their eventual resolution.

This paper describes HALT (Hardware Assembly Learning Tool), a learning tool, that embodies the strengths of both multimedia and artificial intelligence. The system supports exploratory type of learning and provides an adaptive environment that allows the user to navigate the hypertext system effectively. It involves static display of bitmaps, the integration of hypertext, sound and video by means of multimedia techniques. HALT demonstrates the effectiveness of multimedia in the implementation of a software learning tool to guide computer users to assemble the various computer components into a complete computer set by themselves and to help them to troubleshoot should problems arise.

The World Wide Web can be used a powerful and convenient means of disseminating computer aided education because most students already have access to the Web and the necessary Web browsers such as Netscape. There are many benefits in this approach because students already tend to do significant amounts of Internet surfing and are familiar with the usage of Web sites and browsers. Therefore online instruction for their coursework using this all pervasive computer network which may be accessed from almost anywhere is a powerful and beneficial low cost alternative to other forms of computer aided learning. The key aims of this package development are to provide a compact and self contained package of instruction in the features and facilities provided by the C programming language together with an introduction to the Unix programming environment with its vast range of utilities and command interpreter shells. Part of this introduction to Unix is provided in the Bourne Shell as a programming language instruction module.

There is an increasing demand for universities to provide quality education for ever greater number of students, while at the same time reducing costs. Computer Based Training (CBT) can help to meet these demands but until now development costs have been prohibitive. A possible way of producing lower cost CBTs for universities is for lecturers to develop it themselves. This would also ensure a close match between the content and the university syllabus. This paper describes a project in which ten multimedia CBT programs were developed by lecturers in the Technical University of Lisbon (IST). The problems encountered and the results obtained are analysed and solutions for improving future projects are presented.

The paper reports on the modelling of tracking data collected for a large system of Windows help files used in a second year computing course. It proposes a model based on Markov process theory that has given some insights into the basic patterns of use. This model could be used as the basis for helping an author to develop a more suitable menu and link structure, and also for developing a dynamic help system to deliver to the reader the topics that are of most interest.

The paper investigates the application of speech recognition technology to assist English speaking teacher trainees of Asian languages to command tones and stress patterns in oral communication as well as the educational value of using computer assisted language learning techniques for effective teaching in teacher preparation. It discusses some discoveries of a research project supported by the Australian Research Council and demonstrates a new computer software developed by the University of Newcastle.

The paper discusses an on-going project to evaluate the effectiveness of hypertext course materials in active use. It provides some summary statistics which illustrate a wide range of reader behaviour. The explanations of such behaviour are, no doubt complex, and sifting some useful information from the data is not simple. Some success has been obtained in the use of a simple stochastic model based on transition matrices, and some of the hypotheses addressed and suggested by this model, are discussed. The authors feel that the transition matrix approach may provide a valuable means of matching multimedia design to the patterns of use for which they are aimed.
