This essay explores the history, politics, and practice of global-style Pride in Trinidad and Tobago. It distinguishes between “Big” and “Little” forms of Pride and emphasizes that Pride did not emerge with the advent of a parade and day of high-profile visibility in 2018 after a successful High Court challenge to remove homophobic anti-sodomy and related laws in this twin-island postcolonial Republic, but developed over decades of organizing and intervention in lower-profile and more inwardly community-oriented ways, setting the foundation for the new institutional form and full-scale public orientation of #PrideTT. Once conjured, Trinbagonian Big Pride was paradoxically successful vis-à-vis the nation at large, yet also beset by tension, conflict, and schism within. I show how the pattern and structure of this dissension and debate embody wider global currents in the geopolitics of late modern sexuality as well as reflect local parameters and vicissitudes that make the politics of visibility and representation tricky business and far from an unalloyed good. #PrideTT is symptomatic of the changing and contested global political economy of queer visibility and sexual citizenship dramatized by being played in local keys and rhythms, thereby undermining the assumption that Pride is progress.

Exploring LGBT+ People’s Experiences of Pride Events in the UK

This article draws on research on understandings and experiences of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transeveryday lives, focussing on two broad areas: how Pride events link to understandings of LGBT community, and how Pride events can be sites of alienation and exclusion. In the former, I examine two sub-themes concerned with safety and celebration. In the latter, I explore three sub-themes relating to commercialism, identity-based prejudice, and the notion of “excess”. Across these, I draw attention to the boundaries of Pride and how these are experiential as well as spatial and temporal. Study participants viewed Pride events as particularly significant, albeit temporary, forms of “LGBT space”, thought to facilitate feelings of community belonging, safety, and freedom, which were not always experienced elsewhere. However, Pride events were also subject to varied criticisms, related to a lack of “politics”, the presence of alcohol and other commercial interests, and the potential for some LGBT+ people to be excluded within and from Pride events. Often this exclusion was related to their identities, appearance, or access to financial and other resources. Concerns were also evident regarding so-called “flamboyant” displays of pride that unsettled some people who did not want to be (seen to be) “different” or “extreme”. Nevertheless, for others, there was a clear sense of celebration at Pride events, which was appealing. In discussing these research findings, and the place of Pride events within understandings and experiences of LGBT communities in the UK, I identify some of the tensions and temporalities at play.

“The Pride Revolution” "自豪革命"

Israel has recently undertaken a branding strategy that has created a problematic image of the country as an LGBTQ haven in a supposedly sexually retrograde Middle East. Interestingly, while there is a large body of critical scholarship investigating the workings of Israeli homonationalism outwards, as a form of soft diplomacy, wooing international constituencies, the question of how homonationalism is discursively produced and circulated inwards for Israeli audiences has remained relatively unexplored. In order to gain a glimpse of homonationalism within Israel, we analyze the documentary hamahapexa hagea (“which was broadcast in Hebrew by the Israeli public broadcasting corporation on May 2020. With the help of the notions of collective remembering, scale and affect, we demonstrate how the remembering of the Israeli LGBTQ movement and its affective loading, pride, is characterized by specific spatio-temporal discursive moves that position Israel as an exceptional context. On a national scale, Middle-Easternness is highlighted as a key feature of Israel’s exceptional character, enabling Israel to “come out” as simultaneously pro-gay and Mizrahi (lit. “Oriental”). On a global scale, the more traditional and Middle Eastern traits of Israel are downplayed, with a view to portraying Israel as a positive exception of LGBTQ progress compared to the West. Interestingly, the military is made to play a key role in the construction of Israeli exceptionalism with regard to LGBTQ rights, and grief and trauma for fallen soldiers is presented as the emotional litmus test for acceptance of non-normative sexualities in Israel.

Transbekymringens cisnormative økonomi
Pub Date : 2023-06-28 DOI: 10.34041/ln.v28.877
Mons Bissenbakker, Tobias Raun

Tracing Sexual Otherness in Sweden
Pub Date : 2023-06-15 DOI: 10.34041/ln.v28.868
Jenny Sundén
Using Gayle Rubin’s (1984) classic distinction between “good sex” and “bad sex” as a springboard, this article explores ideas of sexual normalcy and sexual otherness in a Swedish context through the lens of a multi-method case study of the kink platform darkside.se (established 2003). The article focuses on how sexual norms on and beyond Darkside have shifted through time, and in particular on how the platform takes shape in an ambivalent borderland between new forms of public kink visibility and lingering sexual stigma. Within histories of sexuality and feminism in Sweden, kink and BDSM have quite consistently been relegated to a domain of sexual illegitimacy (or bad sex). At the same time, waves of queer sexual politics, as well as a cultural mainstreaming of kink, simultaneously point in other directions. To understand (digital) formations of kink in Sweden, I thus develop a less binary conceptual framework, one which holds ambiguity and contradiction. To this end, and by building on discussions of “opacity” in queer and postcolonial theorizing, I discuss tactical uses of Darkside in terms of “kink opacity”. Opacity provides a way of thinking through the tensions on the platform, between revealing and concealing, openness and secrecy, offering resistance to the idea of public visibility as that which legitimizes sexual otherness. Uses of Darkside here challenge the idea of normalizing sexual otherness by public exposure, and instead open up for new modes of obscure sexual expression.
Se(2003年成立)。
