Language Crime by Students in the Communication Process on Campus 大学生在校园交际过程中的语言犯罪

This study aims to identify and analyze language crimes that occur in the communication process among students on campus using a forensic linguistic approach. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method with note-taking techniques. The respondents in this study are students of the Indonesian Christian University of Toraja. The results of the study indicate that language crimes in communication among students on campus occur in several forms of verbal harassment using animal names such as bai or pig, asu or dog, buaya for crocodile, and balao for rat. In addition, there is also language crime using the bombo or devil. This can affect the mental health and well-being of the victimized students. Lecturers and student organizations have an important role as supervisors and enforcers of regulations, as well as providing education and guidance on language ethics within the campus environment.

Lecturer’s Personal and Social Competence Toward Students’ Writing Proficiency in EFL Classroom 讲师的个人和社会能力对学生英语课堂写作能力的影响

The competency of a lecturer is required for a successful learning process that leads to increased student accomplishment. The present study investigates (1) the profile of students' writing skills at the Port Shipping Management Department of Polytechnic of Makassar Merchant Marine (PIP) through a writing test, and (2) the influence of lecturers' personal and social competence on students' writing proficiency in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom settings using qualitative data. The study employed purposive sampling to select 3 lecturers and 30 second-semester students from the Port Shipping Management Department of PIP. Quantitative data were collected through a writing test administered to the 30 students, while qualitative data were gathered using semi-structured interviews with the 5 lecturers, focus group discussions with the students, and classroom observations. The findings revealed various levels of writing proficiency among PIP students and highlighted the positive impact of lecturers' personal and social competence on students' writing proficiency. The better the personal influence and social competence of the lecturers, the better the students' writing capabilities are. The study emphasizes the need for continued development of lecturers' personal and social competence to foster a supportive and engaging learning environment in maritime education and training.

Developing English Textbook for Pre-school Children 开发学前儿童英语教材

This present research is motivated by lack of English teaching materials for pre-school children and the need for an appropriate English textbook. The aim of this research is to develop an English textbook for English for pre-school children. This research adopted Research and Development which employed three stages, namely exploration stage, design stage, and validation stage. Data were collected through document analysis and interviews. The result of need analysis pointed out that pre-school teachers need an English textbook for teaching. In the design phase, the textbook is carefully designed to meet the teachers and children’s need. The textbook includes topics related to children’s real life such as greeting, alphabet, numbers, colors, fruits, animals, family, day, and month. Whereas the activities are designed joyfully. For example, matching the words, drawing pictures, finding pictures that are different, cutting, and so on. The textbook also used colorful images to attract students’ attention to read and to stimulate their knowledge. The textbook was deemed valid. Considering these findings, the English textbook could be used in teaching English for pre-school children.Keyword: English textbook, teaching English, pre-school children

The Efficiency of Using Google Classroom to Teach Writing Descriptive Text 使用谷歌课堂教学写作描述文本的效率

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Google Classroom, which was used to teach students how to write descriptive text for Junior High School. A quasi-experimental research design used in this study. The participants in this study were students in the eighth grade at SMPN 13 in Palembang. Purposive sampling used to select 60 students for this study. The researchers used a pre-test and post-test method to collect data. The researchers used SPSS to analyze the data and test the hypothesis. When the value of significance (2-tailed) in this study was lower than the significance level (0.000 < 0.05), the Ha was accepted. It means that using Google Classroom had a significant impact on students' achievement in writing descriptive text. However, it can be concluded that Google Classroom significantly enhances the efficiency of teaching students to write descriptive text and assists them in completing and collecting assignments without regard to time or space constraints.

The Challenges of English Teachers in Teaching English at Primary Schools 小学英语教师在英语教学中的挑战

The transformation of the education curriculum is inevitable since the quality of teaching and learning should be improved. As a part of the curriculum structure, the status of English at the primary level remains the same. It is an optional subject that can be taught based on school readiness and the availability of English teachers. However, given the new look of the curriculum that emphasizes students' interest and needs in learning, it is worth investigating on what challenges that faced by the teachers in its implementation. In addition, the study on the challenges of the Merdeka Curriculum Implementation particularly in teaching English has not been voiced loudly by other researchers. Therefore, this study is aimed at figuring out the challenges faced by English teachers. The research employs an exploratory case study research design. The participants of the study were Six English teachers (two males and four females) who teach English in the first and fourth grades of elementary schools. The data of this study was collected through interviews. The result of the study showed that dealing with the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum English teachers had the challenges related to internal and external aspects. Internal aspects including teachers’ qualification, students’ vocabulary and motivation. While, external aspects cover limited time allotment, Limited opportunity in joining Merdeka curriculum Champaign, limited school facilities, and Lack of professional development programs. These findings should be concerned, not only by the teachers but also it is the responsibility of schools and government to solve those issues. Therefore, the quality of teaching English at the primary level could be better in the future.

Analysis of Chemical Engineering Students’ Needs on Instructional Reading Strategies 化工专业学生教学阅读策略需求分析

Reading is an important macro skill besides speaking, writing and listening. Reading is a receptive skill, yet it is still essential for success in both academic and in everyday life. Therefore, the study aims at analyzing chemical engineering students’ needs for instructional reading strategies to help them comprehend the text. A qualitative research design was used for this study with quantitative data collection. Data were collected through questionnaires from 60 chemical engineering students and analyzed using descriptive statistics (the interpretations of percentages). The results show that there are seven important reading instructions selected by chemical engineering students (above 90%) that is drawing conclusion, making prediction, identifying cause and effect, distinguishing between facts and opinions, comparing and contrast, identifying the main ideas and identifying supporting details. Chemical engineering students also had favorable attitudes on three other instructional reading strategies that were considered important with the percentage of below 89 percent they are recognizing and interpreting writer’s view, summarizing and drawing conclusions. Based on the analysis of students’ needs, majority of chemical engineering students believe the seven most important instructional reading strategies should be incorporated into the reading materials as reading comprehension activities.

Culture Representations Incorporated within the English Textbook Used for Teaching Seventh-Grade Students in Indonesia 印尼七年级英语教材中的文化表征

This study aims to examine the cultural representation incorporated within the English textbook that the teachers utilized for instructing seventh-grade students in Indonesia. The Study employed qualitative content analysis techniques. The study utilized documentation and a checklist table containing criteria to assess the presence of cultural aspects in the textbook recommended by experts in teaching English as a foreign language. The results indicated that the textbook has successfully fulfilled specific criteria for including cultural information. A distinct and well-defined learning objective accompanies every chapter within this English textbook. The textbook organizes its content into individual chapters, each exploring diverse topics about various cultural aspects. The introduction of vocabulary on the topic of each unit occurs exclusively within the respective unit, without subsequent repetition in subsequent chapters. The content covered in Chapters 1 to 5 of the textbook has encompassed a wide range of cultural elements, exhibiting significant diversity. The material has been tailored to suit the student's age group. Every chapter within this English textbook also presents four distinct categories of language skills. However, the learning materials primarily emphasize Indonesian culture through the inclusion of cultural materials. The chapters within the textbook need to cultivate students' awareness of intercultural understanding. The study utilized documentation and a checklist table containing criteria to assess the presence of cultural aspects in the textbook recommended by experts in teaching English as a foreign language. The results indicated that the textbook has successfully fulfilled specific criteria for including cultural information. A distinct and well-defined learning objective accompanies every chapter within this English textbook. The textbook organizes its content into individual chapters, each exploring diverse topics about various cultural aspects. The introduction of vocabulary on the topic of each unit occurs exclusively within the respective unit, without subsequent repetition in subsequent chapters. The content covered in Chapters 1 to 5 of the textbook has encompassed a wide range of cultural elements, exhibiting significant diversity. The material has been tailored to suit the student's age group. Every chapter within this English textbook also presents four distinct categories of language skills. However, the learning materials primarily emphasize Indonesian culture through the inclusion of cultural materials. Fake News Analysis of Supreme Court Decision from Linguistic Forensic and Critical Discourse Analysis Perspective 从语言取证和批评话语分析的角度分析最高法院判决中的假新闻

This research purposes to know the results of the Supreme Court's decision on fake news by implementing linguistic forensic and critical discourse analysis based on Fairclough's 1995 grand theory approach. Some categories of analysis include representation, relations, identity, and sociocultural practices. Individual who break the law by spreading fake news may imprisonment. This is in accordance with the rules stated in Article 45A paragraph (2) of law number 19 of 2016, which amends law number 11 of 2008.The research method used is descriptive qualitative by collecting and analyzing data from defendants who are proven to have committed acts of insult and hatred of Ethnic Religion and Intergroup. The results of data analysis are in the form of representation of news information, power relations contained in it, the identity of the defendant formed, and the sociocultural practices that arise. Sociocultural practices that occur in this context, such as discrimination, controversy, and manipulation of information. The results of this study can become a foundation to sensitize the public about the dangers of fake news, encourage changes in creating truth in media practices, and increase defendants' awareness of the importance of justice in the criminal justice system.

Systematic Literature Review: Integrating Islamic Education in English Language Teaching 系统文献综述:伊斯兰教教育融入英语教学

Islamic literature, history, and customs are common subjects and resources incorporated into effective English teaching in Islamic nations since they are relevant to the culture. The aims of this study are to explore the integration of Islamic education in English language teaching as well as how teachers can teach English by instilling Islamic values to develop good character in their students. This study involves a systematic literature review (SLR). An SLR requires significant searching across multiple article databases as well as additional journal databases such as Google Scholar to supplement and expand the main database. The next step involved obtaining and locating additional supplies manually. This step entailed reading pieces of literature for which the only information provided was the author, source, or title. The study reveals that understanding culture and society can help integrate religious teaching into ELT. It is critical to understand the cultural and theological context. Teachers who are knowledgeable of Islamic customs, values, and sensitivities should teach them in the classroom. Moreover, to provide students with a well-rounded education, Islamic principles and ethics can be integrated into English language classes. Teachers can explore issues and subjects that are in line with Islamic principles while encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and intercultural understanding.

Comparing TOEFL and teacher’s assessment scores in measuring student’s English skills 比较托福和教师评估分数对学生英语能力的衡量

Standardized English tests have long been used to determine English learner’s level of proficiency. Tests such as TOEFL (Test of English as a foreign language) and IELTS (International English language testing system) are arguably the most popular English tests in the world. On the other hand, English learners are consistently being assessed by their teachers through a performance-based assessment which provides a comprehensive description of student’s learning achievement in learning English. The results of these two forms of assessments were hardly compared and correlated. Therefore, this paper investigates the correlation between student’s TOEFL score and teacher score. Moreover, this study explores how teacher uses washback effects of TOEFL and class tests. Investigating 42 grade 12 students in an English immersion school in Indonesia, the result of this study indicated a positive but weak correlation between TOEFL and teacher’s assessment scores (r = 0.246, p = 0.116). This weak correlation indicates that the two types of assessments measure student’s achievement and performance differently. The washback effect of TOEFL is mainly in the form of teacher’s encouragement to the students to be more serious when taking TOEFL test so that they will be about to get higher scores.
