The interpretation differences of the policies implemented by the Second Vatican Council have a significant influence on the increasingly diverse views and manifestations of the sacred expressions in the Catholic Church. Therefore, this research focuses on the sacred expression of the Sanctuary as the most important space of the Catholic Church. It was carried out at St. Laurentius Catholic Church Bandung because it applies various artificial lighting techniques to its worship space. Furthermore, this research discusses how and to what extent artificial lighting techniques are able to support the sacred expression of the contemporary Catholic Church Sanctuary. Data were quantitatively collected through working drawings, measuring the illumination level in the work area, and determining the brightness of space-forming materials. Meanwhile, data were also qualitatively collected through field observations and visual recordings. The analysis process was used to analyze the architectural sacredness, such as orientation, hierarchy, balance, and symbols. In addition, visual analysis was used for clarity, uniformity, balance, brightness, and spatial intimacy. The results showed that artificial lighting techniques play a significant role in forming sacred expressions of the Sanctuary of the St. Laurentius Catholic Church Bandung.

The phenomenon of a single architectural form has become a global problem. This is also observed in Indonesia as indicated by the specific traditional architecture known as Osing in Banyuwangi. Therefore, this study focuses on the issue of the essence of space created from the surrounding elements in Osing traditional architecture using a qualitative method which involved prioritizing new reading tools including the Lincourt phenomenological approach and the architectural anatomy of Salura. The results showed that the activity forms a linear circular pattern while the lower scoping elements form a geometric arrangement and have a linear movement direction. Moreover, the roof structure shows the dynamic quality of the elements which move from front to back. It was also discovered that the scope of the Osing space is a barrier with the activities within the house isolated and inwardly oriented. The use of local natural materials also provides a warm, rustic and simple character as well as a chance for sustainability. Furthermore, the structures and constructions show that the architecture prioritizes honesty and simplicity. This, therefore, means the essence of space in Osing architecture is in Jrumah based on the space which was found to be closed, natural, simple character, and prioritizing honesty. These findings are expected to be an additional source of knowledge on Osing architecture, serve as input for architects in designing modern houses in Banyuwangi, and input for policymakers in formulating a strategy to preserve this traditional architecture.

Several creative cities aim at becoming tourist destinations, due to the support of physical elements supported by visual identity. Furthermore, due to the low number of tourist visits, most cities have optimally embraced creativity during development, thereby making it a driving force for its citizens' welfare. Therefore, this research aims to identify the physical elements as associated with the image formation of Pekalongan City based on the assessments of residents and visitors. This is a deductive research with the quantitative and qualitative method used for analysis and data were obtained from primary and secondary sources. Primary data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and interviews, while secondary were obtained from literature studies and content searches on the internet. The results showed that the design of a city's physical element through cultural works and folk arts, create unique attributes that attract tourists. Furthermore, these results are expected to encourage city planners and designers to help city managers to understand the importance and uniqueness of visual image for branding formation in an effort to strengthen its competitiveness and attract tourists.

The annual growth of energy consumption in both residential and public buildings has been established globally as been significantly increasing. Therefore, the proposed active and passive building designs are intended to provide convenience and greatly reduce the high energy requirements, before considering mechanical systems (associated with fossil fuel-based energy consumption). This encourages the development of a new design, such as the Climate Adaptive Building Shell (CABS). This study aims to assess the effectiveness of CABS with Helicone mechanisms on energy and natural lighting, as well as its influential factors. The parametric modeling simulation method was applied to compare the energy and natural lighting aspects, between the adaptive and static facades of the Helicone mechanism. The results indicated that the adaptive facade was more effective than the static, based on energy and natural lighting. It was also found that the 30° adaptive configuration with the Helicone mechanism was the most effective. These results were influenced by several factors, i.e., the small turning angle (30° and 150° (-30°) and the anticlockwise direction of the adaptive facade rotation.

Sun orientation plays a significant role in architectural design. Concerning this, the sun-path diagram is a tool for developing more knowledge to improve the quality of building design. For achieving good and thermally comfortable building design, the sun shading device is essential to work. Therefore, this study performs an evaluation of the shading device in tropics utilising the sun-path diagram. This study evaluates the horizontal, vertical and louvre shadings on eight wind directions in Banda Aceh as a case study in tropics by adopting shadow angle protractor for superimposing the vertical (VSA) and horizontal shading angle (HSA) on the stereographic sun-path diagram to indicate the shadow and daylighting time. The result of this study proposes the suitable type of shading and the acceptable depth of horizontal shading dimensions for all of the orientations of the wind directions.

Previous researches on urban housing transformation in Indonesia focused on the privacy and observable morphological changes of the house. This study aims to compare the spatial configuration between the original and transformed plan of the urban houses in Indonesia. Six houses in Jatiwaringin Asri, Bekasi were investigated as part of the case study. The original plan and transformed plan of the houses are obtained through the interviews with the occupants of the houses. The plans were analyzed graphically and mathematically using space syntax. The results show that the open plan space is central in both original and transformed plan. There is strong segregation between public and private area but the interior of the houses maintain low hierarchical organization.

The availability of non-renewable resources to generate electrical energy has decreased. The National Energy Council says that Indonesia has huge potential renewable energy resources. The largest amount coming from solar energy. However, only 5% is utilized. The number of building owners who want to install the technology related to renewable energy on/in a building in Indonesia is still very small. This happens due to the high initial cost of installation. In case of an existing building, the boundaries added with the limitation of structure and limitation of potential-available integrated area. This study proposed a BIPV model in an existing building to contribute the maximum use of renewable energy in a relatively limited potential-available integrated area. The experimental method was applied to several models. Amount of electrical energy generated, and ROI were used as optimization parameters. ROI will give more comprehensive review to a building owner, to show that the time period is the most critical determinant of investment. The study shows that installation of PV on an opaque wall in the west orientation is the optimum one. The model generated 777741 kWh/year of electrical energy, exceeding the existing consumption. ROI calculated in 4.36 years, relatively short compared to 25 years of PV life guarantee. The optimization on this model is supported by its largest number of integrated area and high annual radiation received. This study shows significant results to the building owner. Electrical energy and ROI should be fully taken as a consideration of when to decide to apply PV.

This research investigates the critical role of physical linkage and connectivity in the integration between formal and informal urban areas of the city, as well as recognizes aspects related to physical and social segregation that prevent this integration process. The objective is to understand this role in relation to the viability of integration. Qualitative method describes effectiveness of connectivity and linkage thorough the complexity of interaction between formal and informal areas in the built-form and open space. This research includes two important areas in Bandung, Indonesia, namely, Hegarmanah and Ciumbuleuit. Findings show Hegarmanah as an enclosed configuration with more incidence of controlled areas, through physical barriers, legal restrictions and circulation limitations. Ciumbuleuit presents less controlled areas, encouraging a wider use of public space, a variety of services, commerce, commuting. Interaction between pedestrians and built environment has experienced more adaptation, in a more open configuration. In conclusion, space configuration, borders, limited access and forms of control represent obstructions to the integration process, impairing physical connectivity, encouraging spatial segregation due to isolation and linkage disruption. Integration will be stimulated when space is articulated and able to adapt. Coexistence of seemingly social and physically segregated formal and informal parts of the city can be comprehended when there is a correct interpretation of the role of physical linkage and connectivity through the analysis of space.

Competition between cities in globalization has been made through various efforts. The city must also win a competition through brands in the form of quality of life of creative cities. UNESCO also lists the need for an optimal effort to develop the community's culture and creativity to stimulate the city's regeneration into sustainability. The study aims to dissect the city of Pekalongan as a case study. The research uses qualitative methods with data collection through the Big Data harvesting process analyzed through the interpretation process. The findings are the relationship between the physical elements of city space and the strong meaning concerning the creative abilities possessed by its people, both tangible and intangible. It is this strength that underlies the distinctive and sustainable cultural development to build a city competitive advantage.
