As the population increases, it also increases the demand for water resources; this implies a challenge for the professionals that work in activities related to water supply systems, because these systems must ensure the availability and proper water quality. In Ecuador, the Municipalities are the responsible of the operation and maintenance of the drinking water distribution systems (DWDS), nevertheless some Municipalities do not have strategies and tools for water management, this management will increase index of availability and quality of service; one of the components of the water management is the variables monitoring subsystem. Furthermore, according to experts in DWDS, pressure and flow variables are the most relevant for the calculation of performance indicators proposed by the IWA (International Water Association), the OFWAT (Water Services Regulation Authority) and by the ISO 24512 standard (Drinking Water Management). This project proposes the development of hardware architecture of a portable remote monitoring node applied to hydraulic variables pressure and flow in the DWDS; the developed prototype was evaluated in a water node at UTPL campus and also in a water underground node in the DWDS of the Loja city.

Datamining (DM) brings together a wide range of techniques and algorithms which allow the extraction of knowledge from databases for timely decision making. DM has been applied to different fields of study. One important research field is Education. Applying DM in education is known as educational datamining (EDM). The main purpose of EDM is to analyze data from educational institutions using different techniques such as: prediction, clustering, time-series analysis, classification, among others. This paper presents an holistic view of EDM including classification of algorithms, methods and tools used in DM processes. Furthermore, processes and indicators that could be improved are analyzed in educational institutions. This study covers papers presented from 2005 to 2015.

Today's society is characterized by an abundant growth of data and information within the organizations, largely due to the extrapolation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) used to support their daily activities. The growing complexity of IS, has required the appearance of Information Systems Architectures (ISA) for their management and maintenance. The research team has identified relevance in its applicability within the Portuguese Higher Education Institutions (PHE), and a case study with the University of Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) was drawn. Through the development and implementation of an ISA proposal, UTAD was provided with a transversal view of all the existing IS, allowing validation of the existence/need for IS aimed at managing information and decision-making under a multidimensional perspective, that is, oriented at different organizational levels, from the operational to the strategic level. Given the proposed ISA degree of abstraction, it can be applied to the other institutions within PHE, since they share similar contexts than the one inherent to UTAD.

Network science is a relatively new yet widely researched discipline using network paradigm and a graph theoretic approach. This paper investigates web mining techniques as information retrieval methods, as well as network science paradigm to develop an information retrieval and network analysis system for mapping and visualizing the connections between courses, in order to improve the quality of education.

This article aims to present a software artifact based on the idea of the article “The proposal for a Software Package Using Mind Maps”, to the concepts of Concept Maps. This artifact is called the Bull of Software and will show what are the features of a particular software, information related to the technology and procedures used in the installation. In the end, a comparison between the data found in proposed using Mind Maps with data from concept maps will be made.

In this article we present an approach where students self-explain small pieces of code while they are studying the process of building programs from videos used as instructional material. To evaluate our approach, we carried out an experiment in which we compared it with another approach where students self-studied the same videos. Although we could not confirm that the difference between the two groups was significant, we found a positive correlation within the instructional group between participants' answers to the self-explanation questions and participants' final results. Besides that, participants provided positive feedback regarding our approach. These findings suggest our approach should be investigated in further detail, especially with regard to which instructional conditions are more effective for it.

The shares are considered as a fundamental part of the equity market, as their values change over time as a result of offer and demand, and the effect of market volatility. This volatility makes the trading of shares on a stock exchange is an extremely difficult task. That is why in this article develops and analyzes a system for automatic trading shares, which incorporates a series of progressive learning vector models inspired by the structure of a support vector machine. For the configuration of the overall structure of the model, a number of stock market indicators used by investors to establish positions for buying and selling, were used while learning the model used a sequential negotiation strategy on five different shares listed on the stock exchange of Colombia, and where learning was guided by buying and selling positions that were setting each input stock market indicators. Results from the system showed the profitability that the model was achieved in the negotiation as a result of progress in learning that each of the models was achieved along the sequence of actions used for this study, making the system each more robust time, which makes it ideal for trading shares based on stock indexes.
