In the colonial Cuba of the second half of the 18th century the adoption of an economic model founded on slave-based plantation will lead to a slavery with its own characteristics, which would differ from the continental slave system. Considering the language, a starting assumption is that the inherent tensions of the extralinguistic context has given rise to an own Cuban lexicon of slavery. In order to prove this hypothesis we aim a lexicographical study of Esteban Pichardo’s Diccionario Provincial de Voces Cubanas, the first dictionary dedicated to a regional variant of American Spanish. Starting from the identification of the lexical pieces related to slavery we will focus on the lexicographic treatment of voices in general dictionaries both academic and extra-academic. The analysis of the lexicographic visibility in the different sources and the study of the reception of the diatopic mark will allow us to achieve the approach to the better understanding of the Cuban lexicon of slavery, in addition to contribute to the history of Spanish lexicography.

The components of grammatical meaning contained in dentro, adentro, fuera and afuera determine the distribution that these lexical items have before the verb. The verb assigns syntactic functions to the components; such assignation will depend on the semantics of the verb, and the functions that dentro, adentro, fuera and afuera take in the clause, as arguments or adjuncts. Under specific circumstances, verbs do not activate the grammatical component ORIENTATION contained in adentro and afuera. This meaning then remains present without taking any function in the syntax. The distribution of these words in Mexican Spanish differs in specific aspects from what has been described for other dialects.

The aim of this paper is to prove the presence of a subjunctive pluperfect using ser as an auxiliary verb in the speech community of the city of Almería, Spain. In order to do this a sample of 50 survey respondents was obtained, considering certain social variables such as gender, age and socio-educational level as well as several types of linguistic factors, like semantic features of the verb, its transitivity or its intransitivity, its grammar both person and number concerning verb conjugation and the syntactic-semantic context of occurrence. The results show the predominant usage of this construction over the form haber + participle; its homogeneity (the speaker who uses the verb ser does it so in all cases, he doesn’t alternate with haber); and the gradual extension of usage of the verb ser ending in -se compared to the traditional ending in -ra among younger speakers.

This research aims to describe the Spanish language in contact with the Chapultenango’s Zoque language. Specifically, it provides evidence around the neutralization of the gender mark in the accusative pronominal system, showing a two-case simplified system in which the direct object pronoun (OD) is lo(s) and the indirect object pronoun is le(s), both of them without gender distinction. Likewise, it shows that this neutralization is an indirect contact-induced change in which internal variation of Spanish interacts with the grammatical structure of the Zoque.

Spanish periphrases haber que + infinitive (‘one has to’) and tener que + infinitive (‘have to + infinitive’) convey a modal deontic meaning. Since haber is an impersonal verb in Spanish it is mandatorily conjugated in third person (hay que, habrá que, habría que…). Thus, haber que + infinitive is considered as an impersonal construction meaning ‘instruction’, ‘advice’ or ‘recommendation’. On the contrary, due to its possible conjugation with personal and verbal forms the periphrasis tener que + infinitive means an unavoidable or normative duty to be accomplished by someone. In this paper both periphrases are compared and analyzed as resources that help to create (de)subjectivizing communicative styles which are unequally distributed across different communicative situations and participants.

This paper describes the prosodic features —with emphasis on the nuclear pitch accent— of the statements documented in the corpus “Norma lingüística culta” and “Habla popular de la Ciudad de México” (Lope Blanch, 1971, 1976). The prosodic description is carried out with the Autosegmental Metrical model and the analysis of sociolinguistic factors. Regarding the nuclear pitch accent L+H *, the statistical analysis showed two significant factors: narrow focus statements and the low level of education. The nuclear accent H * is more prevalent in men and the low level of education. By contrast we observed that the group of adults, the higher education and the broad focus statements favor the descending contour, which has lesser relation with vernacular patterns in Central Mexican Spanish.
