This paper describes the linguistic situation presented by the third person clitics used to refer to the direct object of the verb llamarwith data from Mexican Spanish. In the Hispanic grammatical tradition, studies on the phenomenon of the variation of third person clitics have focused on describing how their variability works in a general way with different types of verbs, however, there are very few analyzes in which a detailed study is made with a verb to observe the behavior of its clitics. Although the norm recommends expressing the direct object of the verb llamar with the clitics lo(s) and la(s), this verb has presented variation since its origins, it means, there is also the possibility of using the clitics le(s). The analysis of the data indicates that in Mexico there is a tendency to favor leísta solutions with this verb and this is mainly motivated by the “designativa” meaning of the verb, as well as by the use of se + clitic constructions.

The present article presents a lexicological analysis of the following words: fichera, fichar and ficha. On the one hand, by means of both an exhaustive documentation and dialectological terminology, we demonstrate that fichera and the words with which it is related morphologically and semantically begin as stricto sensu Mexicanisms of objective field to later become lato sensu, due to its diffusion in other variants of Spanish. On the other hand, the period in which the word was integrated into Mexican Spanish is proposed, as well as its first documentation. Subsequently, its diffusion in other varieties of Spanish is shown and the causes that motivated it are argued. Finally, we discuss the proposal made by other scholars of fichera to be part of Mexican thieves’ slang.

The absence or presence of the subject personal pronoun is a linguistic phenomenon typical of pro-drop languages. This paper initiates a series of studies that try to find the linguistic and social determinants that affect the occurrence of this pronoun in the variety of Spanish spoken in Malaga (Spain). We show partial results concerning speakers with a low educational level obtained from the study of the first linguistic corpus of the Project for the Sociolinguistic Study of Spanish from Spain and American in Malaga (PRESEEA-Malaga) collected in the 1990s. For this purpose, we assume the methodology employed in other studies within the framework of the pan-Hispanic preseea project to compare the results obtained. We use the Coding Guide for the variable “expression of the pronominal subject” (Bentivoglio, Ortiz and Silva-Corvalán, 2011), although we have updated and adapted it. The exploratory analysis helps us to broadly compare the percentages of pronoun presence with previous studies carried out in different Spanish-speaking geographical areas. The correlation analysis allows us to observe which predictor variables favour its presence or omission and to assess whether there are similarities with the data from the corpora of Málaga (2015) and other cities such as Granada (2016), Seville (2019) and Valencia (2021), to finally establish a possible linguistic pattern.

The goal of the current article is to find and explain the evolutive processes that caused the coinage of a new proper name Masiosare and, parallelly, an appellative masiosare, based on a Mexican National Anthem’s verse. Furthermore, an intent of ascribing adequate definitions to the newly created lexical unit is made. In order to achieve that, four linguistic corpora: CDEHG, CORPES, CREA, CDNOW; and a series of examples found on the internet are made use of.

The aim of this work is to analyze the influence of semantic-pragmatic factors in the establishment of Spanish subject-verb agreement in those cases in which the nominal that functions as a subject is manifested through a (pseudo)partitive construction, formed by a singular nucleus + plural prepositional phrase (un grupo de neurocientíficos han decidido acabar con los interrogantes del experimento / un grupo de chicos se acercó a mí y comenzaron a golpearme). The Royal Spanish Academy defines agreement as the “formal expression of various syntactic relationships” (NGLE, 2009: 13). It states that this relationship arises from the morphological agreement between two lexical units that are in specific positions. The agreement, then, is understood, from a syntactic position, as the reiteration of inflectional information in various places in the chain. However, from cognitive linguistics, the establishment of agreement is about a conceptual superposition, a common characteristic of grammatical constructions, whereby the same information is symbolized in multiple places” (Langacker, 2008, p. 347). Based on the notions of figure and ground proposed by Langacker (1991 and 2008), our hypothesis argues that the agreement between the subject and the verb is defined, in the cases analyzed, according to the conceptualization of the nominal and which is the element that the speaker brings into focus during the construction of his speech.

It is known there are some forms, the first-person singular of the present indicative of opinion or doxastic verbs ([I] consider, [I] believe, [I] think or [I] suppose...), which present a great complexity of understanding given its polysemy and polyfunctionality. This paper focuses exclusively on the explanation of its pragmatic functioning and, more specifically, on the development of its most frequent function —the attenuation—, based on the uses of the prototypical nuclear form of its set: (I) believe. In order to do that, some of the main features that help to distinguish the pragmatic readings of that verbal form are reviewed and the generic behavior displayed by its uses in discourse is investigated. For that purpose, it is carried out a qualitative analysis of oral corpus (one conversational and one parliamentary), from which functional guidelines are extracted, which help to take a further step in defining its pragmatics specifically and in clarifying the general problematic of the doxastic verbs description.

This paper describes the analysis of the form, function and distribution of third person object clitic pronouns in the corpus PRESEEA-Medellín, and aims to widen the knowledge of clitic pronouns’ morphosyntactic variation in different Spanish varieties. Our findings show that the selection of the forms lo(s), la(s) and le(s) is determined by case, gender and number, independently of the animate/inanimate or continuous/discontinuous nature of the referent, which corresponds to the use of a case distinguishing system. The grammaticalization process of indirect object (IO) doubling is almost absolute (99%), and the depronominalization of le in presence of a canonic io shows an advanced degree, considering that in 61.5% cases the dative singular clitic le cooccured with a plural lexical IO in canonic position, a tendency reported for many other varieties of Spanish (see Fernández Soriano, 1999; Company, 2002; Huerta, 2005; Mojedano, 2014).
