Phylogenetic relationships based on adult morphological characters of the subfamily Cardiophorinae genera, subgenera and species were performed for the first time in Egypt. The phylogenetic relationships among 20 Cardiophorinae species were based on computerized cladistic analysis of matrix of 43 adult morphological characters. According to the analyzed data, Cardiophorinae is a monophyletic group defined by at least three synapomorphic characters namely a well-developed cordiform scutellum, short prosternal intercoxal process and reduced mesepimeron. The cladistic analysis also indicates three main lineages (genera) of varied composition and diversity within the species.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of partial or total replacement of fish meal (FM) with Procambarus clarkii by-product meal (PBM) on O. niloticus growth performance, feed utilization and health. Five isonitrogenous (30% protein) experimental diets were formulated and applied to O. niloticus with initial body weight 10.94 g for four months in ceramic ponds. The control group contained 0% of PBM, while D2, D3, D4 and D5 contained 25, 50, 75 and 100% replacement of FM with PBM, respectively. The present study revealed that the protein content of PBM was 33.13% and its amino acids profile fulfilled the requirements of O. niloticus. All analyzed heavy metals of PBM, except arsenic and iron, were in the permissible limits for O. niloticus. Moreover, the growth performance and feed utilization parameters of fish of all treated groups were significantly different than those of the control one, but the best results were recorded in fish fed diets D2 and D3, followed by fish fed diets D3 and D4. Moreover, the histological investigation revealed that the liver showed alterations only in fish fed diet D5, and the kidneys showed alterations in fish fed diets D4 and D5, however, the gills showed alterations in all treated groups.

The present study aims to evaluate the effects of zooplankton rotifers and copepods on sea bream Sparus aurata fry fish productivity concerning their growth performance, production, and feeding utilization. Two hundred seventy fry of the sea bream (Sparus aurata) with a mean body weight of 0.11±0.01 g were collected from fish hatchery, Alexandria, Egypt and transported to the fish rearing unit in El-Max Research Station, National Institute of Oceanography and Fishers (NIOF), Alexandria, Egypt and maintained under standard laboratory conditions. Fry fish were divided into 3 experimental groups, 120 fish each. The feeding regime of experimental group was: group 1 (T1) fed natural rotifer diet with 20% commercial diet, group 2 (T2) fed natural copepod diet with 20% commercial diet, group 3 (T3) fed natural rotifer and copepod with 20% commercial diet. The feeding was provided four times a day (8.00 &10:00 am and 12.00 & 2:00pm) at a rate of 15% of the live body weight of the fish. The present results revealed that the environmental factors: temperatures (20°C, 25°C, 30°C) and salinities (20 ppt, 25 ppt, 30 ppt) significantly affect the total number and the growth performance of rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) and copepods (Cyclops vernalis). Additionally mixing feeding (rotifers with copepods) resulted in significant increase the carbohydrates and lipids percentage in fry fish comparing to feeding with diet

Resistance against commonly used insecticides is a serious obstacle against eliminating mosquito-borne diseases. There is a demand for novel safe insecticides to control mosquito populations. This study aimed to evaluate the larvicidal action of essential oils extracted from Citrus limon, Myristica fragrans, Citrus sinensis, Syzygium aromaticum, Carumcarvi, Prunusdulcis, Eucalyptus staigeriana, Rosmarinu sofficinalis, Jasminum officinale, and fixed oil extracted from Linum usitatissimum against Culex pipiens 3rd instar larvae. The LC50 value of lemon oil was the lowest and consequently it has been used for subsequent experiments. Lemon oil was characterised using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), revealing 36 compounds. Treatment with sublethal lemon oil doses significantly reduced fecundity and fertility of the 3rd instar larvae. Transmission electron microscopy revealed histopathological changes in integument layers of lemon oil-treated larvae. The titre of octopamine was increased in 3rd instar larvae. Additionally, lemon oil demonstrated low cytotoxic effects in WI-38 human cells as evaluated. Given the relative non-lethality of lemon oil to non-targets, it is proposed as a promising and environmentally safe alternative to synthetic insecticides for controlling mosquito populations.

Brain damage is one of the consequences of diabetes. The main cause of this damage is the overproduction of free radicals resulted from hyperglycaemia. This study aims to address the effect of administration of strawberry leaf extract as an antioxidant agent to reduce brain damage in diabetic male rats. Five groups of rats (N = 30) were divided into control rats group, diabetic rats group, and three diabetic rat groups treated with strawberry leaf extract as 50, 100 and 200 mg/ kg body weight for 30 days, respectively. Diabetic rat brains showed significant increases in malondialdehyde (MDA), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6 and caspase-3 and significant decreases in catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A. Plasma dopamine and melatonin levels were decreased significantly in diabetic rats. After treating the diabetic rats with the three different doses of strawberry leaf extract, the brain and plasma biochemical parameters were improved significantly. The study finally concluded that strawberry leaf extract might be used as an antioxidant, anti -inflammatory, and anti-apoptosis to improve brain damage caused by diabetes.
