Helix aspersa is one of the dominant snail species grown in Egypt. total of 400 garden snails were used in this study, harvested from garden in new Cairo, Egypt. Collected samples were separated into 5 groups of 30 snails per treatment. The remaining groups were fed with different feeding diets as follows; carrot, flour mix (wheat flour 60%, corn flour 20%, CaCO3 20%), pumpkin and cucumber. Six snails were weighed every week throughout the experiment. After 6 weeks, 6 snails from each treatment were cleaned prior their preparation for analysis. Protein, ash, lipid, fiber, moisture, carbohydrates and amino acid composition were determined in all samples. The results showed that the groups of snails which fed on carrot, pumpkin showed significant increase in the total protein level. The ash contents in the groups of snails which fed on carrot, pumpkin or mix flour were increased when compared to the field snails. Total lipids in the group of snails that fed on pumpkin or mix flour significantly decreased when compared to the group of snails that fed on carrot or those collected from the field. Significant decrease in the total fibers were observed in the group of snails that fed on carrot, pumpkin or mix flour when compared to their level in the field snails. Total carbohydrates in the group of snails that fed on carrot, pumpkin or mix flour showed significant reduction after 5 weeks of feeding. Total amino acids showed their high values in groups that fed on carrot and pumpkin. It was calculated that carrot feeding improve the biochemical composition and provide rich nutritional values of investigated snail.

Wheat germ oil (WGO) is a natural source of antioxidant such as glucosylated hydroquinones, tocopherols and it is an excellent source of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The point of the present study is to see how efficient is the WGO against phenylhydrazine (PHZ) induced hemotoxicity in rats. Rats were divided into five groups (six rats each); control group (normal rats), WGO group (administrated by daily oral dose of WGO, 300 mg/kg b.w.), PHZ group (injected intraperitoneally with a daily dose of PHZ, 60 mg/kg b.w. for 3 consecutive days), treated group (injected with PHZ then after 3 days administered by WGO) and protective group (administrated daily by WGO for 11 days then injected with PHZ). The experimental trial was continued for a total period of 14 days. The results showed that the PHZ induced significant decreases in hematological parameters (RBCs, Hb, Hct, PLT), serum proteins (total protein, albumin and globulin) and antioxidant enzymes (CAT, GPX and SOD) activity and significant increases in white blood cells (WBCs), erythropoietin hormone, serum ferritin level, serum liver function parameters (ALT, AST, TBIL and ALP), serum kidney function parameters (creatinine, urea and uric acid) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Administration of WGO improved the hematological parameters, erythropoietin hormone, ferritin level, serum proteins, liver function enzymes, kidney function parameters, antioxidant enzyme activities and MDA content in rats injected with PHZ. In conclusion, the results of the present study revealed that the WGO has a therapeutic and protective roles in improving the hemolytic anemia and toxicity induced by PHZ.

The gene expression measurements can be used as a biomarker for species functioning under stressed conditions in polluted soil. In this study, the response of genes to excessive phosphorous levels in the soil was assessed. The expression of Folsomia candida’s gene encoding the deduced MTC, Cyp6, and HSP70 was evaluated,using quantitative Rt-PCR. F. candida, was exposed to two different field soils at different distances from two fertilizer factories in Kafr El Zayat and Abou Zaabal in Egypt with different levels of phosphorous concentrations. In addition to exposure to phosphate-amended LUFA soil. Our results indicated that the expression of MTC was significantly decreased after exposure to phosphorus-rich field soils and phosphate-amended LUFA soil, Gene expression of Cyp6 was significantly increased in response to higher phosphorous concentrations in soil. The expression of HSP70 did not change in response to all treatments. Gene expression can be used as an early indicator of excess Phosphorous in soil, which effect on the bioavailability of other important nutrients to improve soil quality assessment.

Muscular system in most of animals is responsible for their locomotion as well as movement of internal organs under the control of nervous system. Many genes are involved in the process including adrenaline/noradrenaline in vertebrates. Insect muscular system is considered a powerful tool in studying genes involved in this process . Drosophila is an excellent model organism for muscle research due to its well-developed genetics and the availability of techniques to study its muscle structure and physiology. In the present study, reverse-genetic (RNAi) approaches were used to specifically silencing endogenous mRNA of Drosophila OctbetaRs, counterparts of beta adrenergic receptors of vertebrates to define the role of octopamine receptors genes in the maintenance of striated muscle architecture. Results revealed myofibrillar and/or mitochondrial morphologies disruption of leg muscles due to OctsRs gene silencing indicated that those genes are required in adults to maintain normal leg muscle architecture. The present effort indicated that Drosophila is a useful model for studying the abnormalities of skeletal muscles which may leads to specific myopathy found in the human population.

The aim of this study was to get quantitative data on the seasonal variations of heavy metals levels (i.e. Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd), in different samples (i.e. surface water, sediment and soft parts of the bivalvian Donax trunculus) collected from four consecutive sites over the four seasons; El-Gamil airport, El-Gamil inlet, El-Fardous, and El-Manasra along Port Said Coast, Port Said, Egypt. The relationships between physicochemical parameters (i.e. pH, Temperature, Salinity and D.O) and heavy metal concentrations were assessed, as well. The obtained results showed that the order of mean of the heavy metals concentration in water was appeared as Zn ˃ Fe ˃ Pb ˃ Cd ˃ Cu, while their order in the soft parts of D. trunculus was appeared as Fe˃ Mn ˃Zn˃ Pb ˃Cu˃ Cd. Furthermore, the data rveaed that the mean of heavy metals concentration in sediment samples was appeared as Fe˃ Mn ˃Zn˃ Pb ˃Cu˃ Cd. Additionally, the concentrations of the heavy metals in water samples recorded the lowest value compering to their concentrations in the soft parts of D. trunculus and sediment samples. As a result, Fe recorded its higher value in the soft parts of D. tranculus during spring season which was 854.8, 542.6, 352.7 mg/g dry weight in El-Gamil airport, El-Gamil inlet and El-Fardous sampling sites, respectively. . The obtained data indicated that there was a noticeable relationship between physicochemical parameters (i.e. pH, Temperature, Salinity and D.O) and heavy metal accumulation in surface water, sediment and soft parts of the molluscan D.trunculus Therefore studies on chronic toxic effects of heavy metals in marine organisms, especially edible bivalvia, are needed as a possible public health threat from sea food dietary.

Furthermore, the data rveaed that the mean of heavy metals concentration in sediment samples was appeared as Fe˃ Mn ˃Zn˃ Pb ˃Cu˃ Cd. Additionally, the concentrations of the heavy metals in water samples recorded the lowest value compering to their concentrations in the soft parts of D. trunculus and sediment samples. As a result, Fe recorded its higher value in the soft parts of D. tranculus during spring season which was 854.8, 542.6, 352.7 mg/g dry weight in El-Gamil airport, El-Gamil inlet and El-Fardous sampling sites, respectively. . : Probiotics could have beneficial effects beyond gastrointestinal health, as they were found to improve certain metabolic disorders such as hyperglycaemia and hyperlipidaemia. This study aimed to investigate the effect of probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum on progression of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type2 diabetes in male rats. The animals were divided into: Normal control (NC); Probiotic control (PC) rats administered Lactobacillus plantarum 10 7 CFU/ml/orally/daily for 28 days; STZ-Diabetic control rats (DC, 50 mg/kg/i.p.); Treated diabetic (TD) rats that received Lactobacillus plantarum . Fasting blood glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin, serum, insulin, blood lipid profile, and cardiac markers (creatine kinase; CK and lactate dehydrogenase; LDH) were recorded. Lactobacillus plantarum administration to diabetic rats prevent body weight decreasing and caused a significant ( P = 0.0001) decrease of serum glucose after the first week by 22.34% from the initial value as compared to diabetic rats. Furthermore, at the end of experiment, we observed a significant ( P < 0.05) decrease in HbA1c (19.1%) and increase ( P = 0.0001) of insulin level in (TD) group by (50.90%) compared to (DC). A significant reduction ( P = 0.0001) in CK (39.32%) and LDH (28.28%), TC (24.27%), TG (44.5%), VLDL-C (44.5%) and LDL-C (36.9%) associated with elevation of HDL-C level (33.52%) was also observed in the (TD) group compared to (DC) group. In conclusion, the probiotic L. plantarum significantly improve the onset of hyperglycaemia, hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidaemia, and may contribute to the improvement of cardiovascular disease risk factors in STZ-induced diabetic rats, indicating a lower risk of diabetes and its complications.
