This paper starts by considering the theories of Henri Lefebvre and Rosalind Krauss to outline an understanding of monumentality, drawing on the theories of the well-respected geographer and theorist Doreen Massey, which support the importance of understanding the relationality of site. Following on from this, the role of the monument, and the monument’s connection to imagination and daydreaming, in art practice is explored. Strategies including Modernist reductionism and unmonumental/anti-monumental art practice are exemplified by artists’ works explicitly concerned with the ‘monument’ and the ‘monumental’, and the questions these works raise are discussed with respect to my own documentarist art practice as represented by artworks included in the Intentions exhibition in 2017: the zine what is public space? , 2017, the moving image artwork, vault , 2017, and collaborative sound artwork Script , 2017. Key-words : daydreaming, imagination, art practice, monument, relational space

The author of this paper is an Mphil student studying at the Royal College of Art, School of Communication. His research topic concerns low literacy and literacy design and has two aims: firstly, to determine whether design language as a cognitively functional system can cross cultural and linguistic barriers to facilitate illiterate cognition. Secondly, to ask whether data achieved and any co-designed research findings can usefully reflect on and contribute to design literacy? The paper describes three experiments conducted at the School of Communication Research Work in Process Show, in December 2017. These experiments are intended as catalysts: to see what the challenges of the researcher’s research project on levels of literacy and design might be, to explore participant strategies across barriers of culture and literacy, to format appropriate materials and methods which could contribute to his research journey. Keywords: Participatory methodology, Chinese Typeface design

The Monga Show is the tropical version of the girl-to-gorilla trick, a sideshow act in which a beautiful lady mutates into an agitated gorilla, through an illusion technique called Pepper’s Ghost. This paper is a personal account of the process of building a mini Pepper’s Ghost illusion device, a prototype that emulates the Monga Show. Building this device led me to speculate on the possibility of it functioning as a model that prefigures Amerindian Perspectivism (Viveiros de Castro, 2004). The paper includes diagrams showing how the device works, and a brief discussion of the differences between the Pepper’s Ghost scene and the Monga Show act. Keywords: Prototypes; Practice-led research; Pepper’s Ghost; Amerindian Perspectivism.

The theoretical writing by textile designer and artist, Anni Albers, in her self-authored books On Designing (1961) and On Weaving (1965) provide artists and designers with insights and methods for stimulating resourceful and creative ingenuity. This article examines Albers’ modernist theories as they are enacted upon through material and process in a quest to apply Anni Albers’ theories as a methodology for practice-led research. While teaching at Black Mountain College from 1933–1949, Albers encouraged her students to begin their creative process by “starting at zero” (Fesci, 1968) therefore this research begins in the same way. Anxieties that arise from making without knowing what something is or what that something may become must be put aside. Trust in the process becomes paramount as creative explorations start from a place of intuitive making which leads the practitioner to more structured and purposeful research leading to new ideas and foresight into future projects. Keywords: Anni Albers, practice-led research, materials, process, methodology

This paper presents a reflection and discusses about the role of design in the complex context of media. Such environment encompasses information and communication technologies and the cultural communities where they have origin and develop. It also encompasses protocols, practices, products and institutions and power involved in creating and disseminating this media. Such reflections and discussions are important and necessary in order to understand the social responsibility of designers as producers and creators of systems, information and communication, as well as of aesthetic standards that will, certainly, have influence in the culture and structure of the society. Design, as producer of contemporaneous languages – among them the hypermedia and the transmedia – has an active and determinant role in the society where it acts, as one of the main builders of culture. To make flourish, unequivocally, the perception and awareness about this role of design is one of the main objectives of this research project. A Workshop will be presented, aimed at investigating the interrelationship between Design, Communication and Technology. It was performed during the event entitled Intentions: Conversations, Experiences and Knowledge held in the School of Communication – RCA Participants had opportunities of understanding how much transformations of the visual represent an instigating and challenging social interaction. Keywords: Design, communication, technology, interdisciplinary, workshop
