in the interwar years, finland and estonia were characterised by the fact that in both countries exceptionally broad linguistic and cultural rights were given to national minorities, compared with the situation in the rest of europe. there were several factors behind this. one was the relationship between ethnic groups from a historical perspective. another was each country’s internal debate on the kind of social order in general that was to be built. the third was how politics in finland and estonia was influenced by international trends and theories on how national minorities should be treated. the article analyses how national minorities were taken into account in the finnish and estonian constitutions which held true in the period between the two world wars, and why account was taken precisely in a certain way. at the same time, it considers what kind of views in this regard were presented by different political parties, what kind of debates were held in the parliaments of both countries, and how the matter was dealt with by other significant interest groups.

Estonia was a post-imperial country where the question of how to develop a citizen loyal to the new nation-state arose after the First World War. Seen by some as being composed of the best part of the Estonian nation, the army was considered to be a good tool for the effective training of citizens. In order to fulfil the idea of the army as a school of nation, the crucial issues were the creation of its own military traditions, language policy, and the education of personnel. The leadership of the army tried to eliminate the influence of the former Imperial Russian army, invented new military traditions in the national spirit, and actively cultivated nationalist ideas. The article analyses the education of Estonian military personnel in this regard, discussing how nationalism, language policy, cultural training and history lessons helped to embody the vision of the army as the school of nation.

the 13th and early 14th century was a time when Lithuania emerged as a grand duchy and became one of the biggest expansion forces in northeast europe. unfortunately, we have no information today about what the equipment of a Lithuanian warrior looked like at that time, except for archaeological data and poor historical sources. the aim of this article is to show that by using this apparently quite scanty information, we can create not only an image of the arms and armour used by a particular warrior; there is also a possibility to retrace specific features of warfare by Lithuanians. the search for analogues should not be limited to archaeology. much information can be obtained from sources in the fine arts and applied arts. the analysis of medieval art can be as important as research into weapons itself, because an archaeologically discovered object can easily be recognised in fine arts sources. However, this information should be analysed carefully, taking into account certain factors (the special conditions of medieval art) that may cause the study to go in the wrong direction.

Nuo XX a. antrosios pusės Lietuvos istoriografijoje isaugo susidomėjimas kariaunos, kaip vieno svarbiausių viduramžių karybos komponentų, reiskiniu. Archeologai ir istorikai sį probleminį klausimą nagrinėja skirtingai dėl skirtingos metodologijos ir valstybės raidos sampratos, todėl iki siol baltų kariaunos genezė, funkcionavimas, struktūra bei susilpnėjimas / sunykimas XIV a. yra suprantami itin skirtingai. Kariaunos problematika straipsnyje nagrinėjama trimis pjūviais: 1) aprasomos ir peržiūrimos archeologų ir istorikų pozicijos; 2) lyginamos dviejų disciplinų kariaunos sampratos, ieskoma panasumų ir skirtumų; 3) analizuojamos kariaunos chronologijos, definicijos, argumentacijos problemos Lietuvos archeologų ir istorikų darbuose. Is straipsnio aiskėja, kad archeologų ir istorikų darbuose trūksta lyginamojo metodo taikymo, atsižvelgiant į karinių-socialinių struktūrų raidą Vidurio ir Vakarų Europos kontekste. Be to, tik nedidelė archeologų ir istorikų dalis bandė apibrėžti, kas vadintina kariauninkais baltų visuomenės socialinėse struktūrose. Pagrindiniai žodžiai: baltų kariauninkai, karo istorija, Lietuvos viduramžių istorija, Lietuvos archeologija, baltų visuomenės struktūrų istorija.
