Interacting with a car was once a tactile experience, which is on the decline with the rise of car assistants, where the dominant form of interaction is through screen displays and voice recognition. These interaction modalities within a car are not the only options available. In this paper, we discuss reintroducing tactility into the automotive experience. This work presents a tactile embodiment of an intelligent car system, different from previous studies, to improve engagement and emotional connection between users and future intelligent cars. A prototype tool was designed to embody an intelligent car system. It was used to investigate how to interact with and control a smart-comfort system to improve user comfort. The tool invited users to interact through touch. Users could use their hands to physically agree or disagree with changes made by the system with the system moving in response, creating a bi-directional interaction symbiosis that re-prioritises tactility.

The fact that automated vehicles will be part of road traffic raises the question of how human road users, like bicyclists or pedestrians, would safely interact with them. Research has proposed external human-machine interfaces (eHMIs) for automated vehicles as a potential solution. Concept prototypes and evaluations so far have mainly focused on young, healthy adults and people without disabilities, such as visual impairments. For a “one-for-all” holistic, inclusive solution, however, further target groups like children, seniors, or people with (other) special needs will have to be considered. In this workshop, we bring together researchers, experts, and practitioners working on eHMIs to broaden our perspective on inclusiveness. We aim to identify aspects of inclusive eHMI design that can be universal and tailored to any culture and will focus on discussing methods, tools, and scenarios for inclusive communication.

Imagining an Inclusive Future for Shared Autonomous Vehicle Interiors: A Participatory Design Workshop Study
R. Severs, Jiayu Wu, C. Diels, D. Harrow, Joseph Singleton, Richard Winsor
The introduction of shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) has the potential to provide better transport to people groups who currently experience transport exclusion. In this paper we describe a series of four workshops carried out with members of a range of transport excluded people groups- older people (65+), women, disabled people, neurodivergent people, and people with mental health conditions (N=11). Workshops explored existing experiences of transport with a journey mapping activity and participants generated inclusive design solutions for SAVs through a participatory design activity. Through thematic analysis of workshop data, we identified 3 main areas where design intervention in the interiors of SAVs could create more inclusive SAV journey experiences. These areas were adaptability, safety & security, and navigability & familiarity.

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is expected to pave the way for a new mobility experience by providing air travel services around cities and urban areas. However, few studies have derived user needs and requirements from a transportation experience perspective. Therefore, we propose an interactive workshop to discuss people's expectations when experiencing UAM actively. We want to extend on the prior workshop held at AutomotiveUI 2021 which will continue the discussion about user experience for different types of UAM operations. The workshop includes keynote presentations, position paper presentations, and interactive group discussions with the following objectives: 1) to understand the role of UAM in future transportation, 2) to understand the way that people expect their transportation journey when using UAM, and 3) to collect design considerations to support the transportation journey in UAM.

Autonomous shared ride vehicles may be prone to similar social issues and non-ideal passenger behaviors as today’s public transit. Such issues may include passengers littering, harassing others, and creating an environment that is generally unpleasant for riders. Transportation user experience designers should preemptively consider such scenarios early in their design work to help develop possible interfaces to manage social order and maintain good rider experience. Through a short video prototype, we present three possible non-ideal scenarios that may occur on shared autonomous shuttles and provide three potential solutions to begin a discussion around how to design for such non-ideal situations.

Many car accidents are caused by human distractions, including cognitive distractions. In-vehicle human-machine interfaces (HMIs) have evolved throughout the years, providing more and more functions. Interaction with the HMIs can, however, also lead to further distractions and, as a consequence, accidents. To tackle this problem, we propose using adaptive HMIs that change according to the mental workload of the driver. In this work, we present the current status as well as preliminary results of a user study using naturalistic secondary tasks while driving (i.e., the primary task) that attempt to understand the effects of one such interface.

To make the rise of automated vehicles possible and to allow for their mass adoption, one major problem still needs to be solved: Motion sickness. Automated vehicles lead to increased motion sickness partly caused by an occlusion of the outside world (conflict between visual and vestibular system). In this study, we propose the usage of Virtual Reality (VR) headsets for productivity tasks while traveling as well as a motion sickness mitigation strategy. Car motion is simulated using a rotating chair while a reading task is presented in VR with or without visual motion cues being presented in the background. Visual motion cues showed a somewhat beneficial effect on motion sickness in this study without being perceived as too distracting from the primary reading task or affecting reading performance further highlighting the potential of VR usage in transport.

Pick Your CARbon: User Perceptions of Equivalencies for Carbon Emissions when Selecting Rideshares
V. Mohanty, Alexandre L. S. Filipowicz, N. Bravo, Rumen Iliev, Scott Carter, David A. Shamma
Ridesharing is a popular choice for personal transportation needs. Although more ecologically-friendly than single-occupancy vehicles, there is an opportunity to further reduce CO2 emissions by offering green choices. Here we examine whether providing people with information about CO2 emissions nudges them to make more eco-friendly rideshare decisions. Our study tested what kind of information works best to inform people about carbon emissions, comparing direct CO2 values with more relatable carbon equivalents (e.g., trees). We conducted an online study with 1000 participants who picked between regular and eco-friendly ride options that detailed various carbon-output equivalency interventions (e.g., pounds of coal, number of smartphones charged, etc.). We found that participants are more likely to choose a green ride when presented with information about direct CO2 emissions than when presented with carbon-equivalencies. This study aims to inform future information-based interventions more broadly, beyond the context of ridesharing.

The Influence of Gaming Experience and Optic Flow on Simulator Sickness: Insights from a Driving Simulator Study
Chantal Himmels, André Reinhold Czupala, Tobias Fahmüller, Barbara Fuchs, Lea Hauf, Linda Heidler, A. Riener
Simulator sickness can increase dropout rates and bias participant behavior in driving simulator experiments. It has been suggested that participants experienced with simulator driving are less susceptible to simulator sickness. The authors hypothesized that gaming experience may likewise reduce the susceptibility to simulator sickness. It was also proposed to decrease optic flow in the virtual driving scene to reduce simulator sickness. The preceding assumptions were investigated in a driving simulator experiment with N=26 participants. Results indicate that gamers are less susceptible to simulator sickness compared to non-gamers. Regarding optic flow, only descriptive tendencies could be observed in terms of lower simulator sickness with reduced optic flow. Future studies should be aimed at investigating how gaming experience can be used in order to reduce simulator sickness in driving simulators. The effect of optic flow should be reconsidered in a larger experiment.

Designing and Evaluating Meaningful Tactile Displays to Assist Takeover in Automated Vehicles
Kimberly D. Martinez, Gaojian Huang
Semi-autonomous vehicles occasionally require drivers to take over control of the vehicle when systems reach their limitations. Therefore, a reliable human-machine interface may be necessary to help drivers during the sudden and complex takeover process. The goal of this study is to design and evaluate six meaningful tactile signal types, representing the six most commonly used driving scenarios in previous research, and two pattern durations, on drivers’ perception and performance during automated driving. A human-subject experiment using a medium-fidelity driving simulator was designed, with 20 tactors embedded in/on the seat back, pan, and belt to convey meaningful vibrotactile signals. Dependent measures include reaction times, interpretation accuracy, and subjective ratings. The findings of this study will inform the design of next-generation in-vehicle human-machine interfaces.
