The paper discusses the problem of overabundance in third-conjugation Italian verbs. It provides a detailed diachronic analysis of grammar compilations to examine how verbs with a dual inflectional paradigm were described and how their usage has changed over the centuries. Extensive research into 59 grammar books intended for both native speakers and foreigners published in Italy and abroad form the 16th to the 19th century has shown that overabundance in the third conjugation was mentioned already in the earliest works of this type. Over time the interest in the topic grew even further as scholars explored its various aspects. The reconstruction of grammatical practice throughout centuries has uncovered the evolution of some verbs and their trajectory. In particular, it was possible to trace the development of: 1) verbs whose alternative, stylistically marked, form has become obsolete and exists only as an -isco form in modern Italian (ferire, languire, patire, perire, tradire); 2) verbs whose usage was unstable over centuries, with one form or the other predominating intermittently, until only one remained in use (tossire); and 3) verbs that have maintained a dual inflectional paradigm for the whole analysed period (aborrire, applaudire, assorbire, avvertire, inghiottire, mentire and nutrire).

Food and, consequently, the language that describes it represent one of the areas of culture and language in which there has been the strongest assertion of an identity model. This is the result of the sum of different local components. Until the beginning of the 20th century (essentially until the lesson of Pellegrino Artusi), the gastronomic lexicon had moved toward Frenchizing models (i.e. Francesco Leonardi’s Apicio moderno). During the last century, it rapidly descended into an essentially national dimension but also with a kind of “globalization” of the typical product, whereby it is natural to find Sicilian cannoli in Bozen and strudel in Palermo), and finally local, with the revaluation of local products (for example, with the defense and valorization of slow food). Added to this is the progressive expansion of the space that the language of food has in dictionaries and also in the “vocabolario di base” of Italian (significant in this regard are the entries made in the Nuovo De Mauro with respect to GRADIT): precisely by starting from the description of the lexicon of food in the Italian lexicography of use, an interpretation of the relationship between Italian, regionalism and dialectalism in the describing of an identity share of the Italian lexicon will be proposed.

Regional language varieties and dialects are experiencing a period of enormous diffusion and of affirmation of the individuality of human beings: they are a comfort zone used to talk about everyday life, about one’s own intimacy, but also to build around oneself an identity fortress to be used in relationships with others. The close link between Roman dialect, territory and identity emerges in the two series Strappare lungo i bordi and Questo mondo non mi renderà cattivo, created by Zerocalcare. The contribution aims to analyze its language (above all, lexicon) and culture, to confirm how Roman dialect is a vehicle for representing identity.

The article examines the role of food in shaping the Italian national identity based on the example of Italian football language in the most-read Italian newspaper entitled “La Gazzetta dello Sport” (www.gazzetta. it). At first, the concept of identity is analyzed and then its particular shades in the case of Italy and the attitude of Italians toward food, its importance and widespread occurrence within the entire country will be discussed. In fact, the food is a factor which seems to be a bonding element for all Italians and a means of expressing the current Italian national identity. The author identifies it as the Italian culinary identity. The phenomenon can be observed in such presently existing Italian culinary terms as cioccolatino, brodino, biscotto, spezzatino, mangiarsi un gol and the like that are used in Italian football news.

In some cases, the teaching of Italian as an L2/LS language continues to perpetuate gender stereotypes, sexist or discriminatory elements. When this is not the case, however, it often fails to offer those approaching the study of Italian the tools and materials to address relevant issues and themes in the contemporary debate such as gender identity and the importance of using inclusive language. Aware that the didactics of Italian can be a fundamental tool for building a context of coexistence of differences, we want to reflect on the Italian situation and present some didactic proposals that can allow to combine in the Italian classroom a language education a reflection on gender identity.

The article is dedicated to the analysis of the linguistic-textual representation of Salvatore in Umberto Eco’s novel The Name of the Rose and its Slovene, Croatian, Czech and Polish translations. The first part of the article deals with different linguistic and intertextual layers composing Salvatore’s original utterances, while the second part is devoted to Salvatore’s translated language, concentrating – primarily – on his heteroglossia and intertextuality. Salvatore is a grotesque plurilinguistic and intertextual character born out of the rich erudite immagination of Umberto Eco. The four translated Salvatores appear also as strange babelic monks whose multilingualism expands by adding a dominant Slavic linguistic element to the source-text heteroglossia. The intertextual dimension of translated Salvatores, on one hand, diminishes as most source-text citations blend into the translated linguistic mosaic, but, on the other hand, it also increases by gaining an additional metatextual (translational) dimension and, equally important, by incorporating a substantial part of Eco’s original text.

By questioning the notion of ethos in utterance from an attested production of Vietnamese speeches, we make the postulate of the instruction of a collective ethos at the level of kinship terms. Moreover, dynamic discursive traces reveal the implicit encoding of this collective ethos. We rely on a concept of Vietnamese collective ethos: họ.

The aim of the article is to reconstruct the self-image by Rutka Laskier, a Jew who died at the age of fourteen in the gas chamber of Auschwitz. It was explicated in the diary she wrote during four months in 1943. This short period of time was enough for her to feel the necessity for finding answers to vital questions due to her impending death. The girl’s lucidity of her tragic situation cracks her identity in statu nascendi and, consequently, disrupts the unity of her textual image. The methodology stays within the framework of the linguistics of enunciation, applied to literary texts. The exploration of the image of Rutka in her writing is done through the traces of subjectivity realised by deictic, affective, evaluative and modal qualifiers.

The ethos of the journalist is based on his representations of the public space. Updated in the discourse, they participate in the construction of citizen identity. This is what we show through an enunciative analysis of editorials from the daily “Le Monde” during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. The analysis highlights an increasingly marked identity divide during the crisis.
