Abstract The objective of this article is to prioritize sites of environmental importance in Brazil, according to their need for protection or conservation. For this, a methodology was applied in the sites that presented geographical overlap or proximity between protected areas and ethnic communities were selected to be evaluated taking into account criteria that define their ecological, social and cultural importance, such as: area of influence, integrated areas, anthropic pressure, species conservation status, Ramsar sites, hotspot, biosphere reserve, IBA and KBA sites, natural heritage, status of recognition and relationship between indigenous lands and quilombos, historical value, archaeological sites and cultural heritage. As a result, 1651 sites were identified, 249 were selected and evaluated, obtaining 14 with high, 91 medium and 144 low priority. With this information, the objective is to generate technical support that serves as an input for the generation of public policies aimed at its protection and conservation.

Abstract This work aimed to assess Brazilian biomes’ biocapacity (BC) using concepts of the Emergy Ecological Footprint method. Climate and forest cover data were interpolated using the Kriging method. In 2016, the Brazilian BC was among the largest in the world, 42.11 gha / cap. The biomes’ forest coverage areas were investigated and simulated in two scenarios: optimistic (with 100% forest coverage) and pessimistic (only 10%). The Amazon’s contribution of half the Brazilian BC would reduce by 88% in a pessimistic scenario. The Atlantic Forest contribution was only 1.9% of the national BC, however, in an optimistic scenario, it would increase by 690%. The reduction of deforestation, fires and expansion of areas protected by law are measures that positively impact the BC of the studied biomes. This methodology can be used as an environmental quality indicator as it adheres to the principles of Sustainable Development.

Abstract Conventional pastureland management has brought Southern Brazilian dairy farms to a financial and environmental crisis. In this context, the management-intensive grazing system (MIG) emerges as a viable alternative to conventional pastureland management. This study aims to analyze the Social-Ecological System (SES) transformation process of the dairy system in Santa Rosa de Lima, Southern Brazil, from conventional management to MIG. For the analysis, two different frameworks were combined: SES transformation process and the triple-loop learning frameworks. The analysis was based on a statistical analysis of interviews, conducted with dairy farmers. Results show that the dairy system in Santa Rosa de Lima is in the middle of a transformation process. During this phase, farmers have already reached single and, partially, double-loop learning. Among the elements needed to successfully move the transformation process forward, social learning stands out as indispensable, as well as financial capital. For this, payments for ecosystem services are suggested.

Abstract The study aimed to analyze the role of actors in the reverse logistics chain of used pesticide packaging in the Cerrado of Piauí. To that end, interviews were conducted with representatives of chain agents in the four municipalities that most produce soy in Piauí. Representatives of the Receiving Centers of the Agricultural Defense Agency of Piauí, business agriculture and family farming participated in the research. It was found that, despite positive initiatives of packaging receiving center operators, agricultural producers and the government, there is much to be done to minimize the negative impacts on nature and the consequent damage to people’s health, as there are flaws in the official mechanisms for inspecting agricultural production units that make daily use of pesticides. Thus, joint action in the reverse logistics chain is necessary, initiated by the public authorities and disseminated to the rest of the chain participants.

Abstract Increasing competition over decreasing water supply and rapid growth of small and medium enterprises lacking pollution control measures suggest the need for improved institutional framework to manage effluent discharge. The research analyzes the adequacy of institutional arrangements and instruments for managing industrial effluent discharge in Yogyakarta, Indonesia through case study and in-depth interviews with purposive sampling. Results suggest overemphasis on prescriptive measures, lack of adequate coordination mechanisms, and lack of effective policy instruments for pollution control among small enterprises. It is necessary to establish an umbrella agency with cross-cutting authority for consistency, to differentiate regulatory and economic instruments for the various industries, to reduce the number of environmental permits, and to introduce incentives for developing industrial estates. Industries contemplate on their actions as the general public is notified of their environmental standing through media coverage within the Clean River Program.

Abstract This narrative is the result of the round of talks “Chico Mendes Vive”, held during the III Latin American Congress of Political Ecology. It is a living experience of four Amazonian women, Angela Mendes, Claudelice Santos, Edel Moraes and Sônia Guajajara, whose speeches emerge from the experience of indigenous, black, cabocla, agro-extractivist women, who make of their lives a struggle in defense of Mother Earth and of the “common good”, which aggregates, welcomes and feeds all the other forms of being in the universe. This narrative expresses the continuity of the re-existence of native and indigenous peoples, the reconnection of the peoples of the forest, water and countryside, through the legacy left by Chico Mendes, a son of the Amazon, who was assassinated for defending and fighting for life.

Abstract Brazilian river basin committees are a democratic innovation increasingly studied throughout the world as a positive example of water governance, with some limitations. In our two-year research project (2018-2020), we aimed at activating, preserving and circulating narratives and stories from the participation of the various social, economic and political actors in the Upper Tietê River Basin Committee (São Paulo), in order to gather organisational memories. Our interview data bring lessons applicable to contexts with similar governance systems and others beyond, by suggesting how democratic, participatory arrangements can be improved as strategies that a society can explore in the process of learning how to cope with the effects of climate change, including the threat of water scarcity that grew in the metropolitan region of São Paulo after 2014. Interviews point to the need to clarify the roles of the committee and its members before society, to strengthen authority and legitimacy.

Abstract Socio-environmental conflicts have been intensifying in the 21st century, which has prompted new approaches seeking to identify the origin of these conflicts and enrich their analyses. This study monitored the environmental licensing of the Campo Grande Logistic Center, in Paranapiacaba, a district in Santo André (SP), in order to identify the social representations of the environment for different actors involved in the licensing process and discuss the interference of the social representations in the established conflict. The case study employed multiple methods of data collection, including participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. A prototypical analysis was carried out in line with the theory of social representations by Moscovici, Abric, and Reigota’s environment classification. The social representations found were globalizing for civil society and anthropocentric for the entrepreneur, relating the origin of the conflict to different material and symbolic appropriations of environmental resources, in this case, the territory itself.

Abstract Food knowledge and practices in the Jequitinhonha Valley are the result of its socio-biodiversity and suffer the impacts of the food homogenization process. This study aims to characterize the food social space and the role of spontaneous plant species in the community of São João da Chapada in Diamantina (Minas Gerais/Brazil) and thereby contribute to strengthening food culture in rural communities. With a qualitative and quantitative approach and participant observation, semi-structured interviews, ethno-botanical walks and culinary demonstrations were performed. Thematic content analysis and descriptive statistics show that the local food social space management is the work of women and has a strong territorial bond. 78 species of spontaneous food plants were identified. They play both nutritional and symbolic roles and are in the culinary culture albeit knowledge of them is greater than their effective use.

Abstract The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is a South American native rodent with an outstanding capacity to colonize urban environments. In Curitiba, a city worldwide known for its urban planning, the capybara adaptation comprises an interesting case to better understand the challenges in addressing Aichi targets at the local level. Specialized literature, official data and interviews indicate that this species is spreading throughout parks interconnected by rivers. This study illustrates an intricate relationship between capybaras and the urban socio-ecological environment, suggesting that the city only partially addresses Aichi targets. Local authorities are likely to face several challenges for adopting a global agenda on biodiversity. Producing robust knowledge on the urban biota is one fundamental step towards this goal.
