Abstract Library learning spaces in the 21st century are expected to be service-rich spaces. In these spaces, students are often supported by librarians and other campus units offering support for student learning and well-being. This study investigated services offered in library learning spaces in select academic libraries in Kenya through interviews and observations. It was established that the libraries continue to offer services that are basic and largely traditional. They are yet to introduce modern and innovative support for student learning or to bring together services spread throughout their campuses which would make their spaces one-stop shops. The study recommends that academic libraries in Kenya should consider redeveloping their services by modifying the existing services and bringing on board new learning support services through a good understanding of student needs and the establishment of university-wide collaborations. This would lead the libraries into becoming true learning hubs and popular spots for student learning.

Abstract Since 2012, Cullom-Davis Library at Bradley University has used Get It Now, an article delivery service from Copyright Clearance Center. It was initially added to fill a hole in the collection created by a 20% reduction in the library budget. In the succeeding 9 years, the service continued to be offered. However, changes were made along the way to keep the costs down. This article discusses these changes, the usage of this service long-term, and its sustainability over time. This is the first study to look at Get It Now over such a long period of time.

Abstract The fundamental mission of the library is to provide users with unrestricted access to library resources anytime, anywhere regardless of their physical location, disability, or other circumstances. Library Access Service departments across the nation have been an innovation engine of creativity and opportunity for many decades. The global epidemiology outbreak experience illuminates areas for potential reforming beyond traditional library services. Controlled Digital Lending (CDL) is one of the emerging modern technologies libraries have used to deliver information digitally in support of online learning and teaching, to make educational materials more affordable and more accessible during the global health crisis. CDL opens a new frontier of library services, as a mechanism for the library practice to enhance user’s experience of using libraries’ services. By exploring this tool, libraries can distribute resources in an effective and equitable way. This paper shares the journey of piloting a CDL program at a large R1 institution to ensure students have reliable, affordable access to course materials they need during the pandemic. The paper demonstrates the development of the CDL platforms, policies, and implementation plans and further discusses challenges and lessons learned and how the library community plans to sustain the program into future library services.

Abstract As the role of print collections in academic libraries moves from monograph storage to a method for engaging users, the browsability and accessibility of print collections are becoming increasingly important. One factor that affects the ability to comfortably browse collections is the height at which the books are stored. This paper examines the relationship between the shelf level on which books are shelved and their circulation rates. Results indicate that books stored on the top level tended to circulate less than books stored on lower levels, but the effect may vary based on the subject area.

Abstract An academic library plays a significant role in providing information services to fraternities. However, persons with disabilities need special attention and specialized services. This study aims to identify the special needs of, and the services required by, persons with disabilities or differently-abled persons. The samples were collected from graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students with disabilities in 10 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India. The survey research design and the snowball sampling technique were used to collect samples from scattered populations across the ten IITs. A total of 217 samples were collected from the respondents. The results show that graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students with disabilities were satisfied with the library resources and services available to persons with disabilities. The students had a positive opinion about the accessibility of their libraries and the impact of information and communications technology (ICT) on their studies and research work. However, they expressed the need for more training and orientation on using new tools and services for persons with disabilities. The study identified essential library tools and services for persons with disabilities. Academic and other libraries elsewhere in the country should take a cue from the IITs and take steps to make themselves accessible and offer specialized services for persons with disabilities. The findings of this research study will be helpful for policymakers and librarians who want to establish special services for persons with disabilities.

Abstract With the rising cases of theft, vandalism, mutilation, infiltration, and other fraudulent practices at academic libraries, the matter of library security has become a matter of greater concern for modern-day library professionals as well as scholars in the field of library and information science. Considering the seriousness of the issue, the present study has adopted bibliometric techniques to gain significant insights into the performance, direction, and state of research in the field of library security in academic libraries. A total number of 440 articles published in the last two decades were retrieved from the Scopus database and analyzed using bibliometric techniques. The results indicate that library security is gaining the attention of contemporaneous scholars in the research field of library and information science and led to the identification of digital services, computer simulation, and web interface as some of the key concepts in the area of contemporary library security research.
