Abstract 3D printers represent a significant financial investment for academic libraries. The development of makerspaces and other library provided services centered around this technology is a testament to the role these technologies can play in offering new resources to students. However, given the investment it behooves the academic library to work to develop new models of applying 3D printing in other areas in order to maximize these resources. One way in which the academic library can extend the use of 3D printers is by offering them as a mechanism for creating custom designed 3D models for use in the classroom. By closing the skills gap in providing both the printer and the ability to design objects for faculty, academic libraries can open a new avenue for providing instructional services on campus.

Abstract Tennessee State University was a decade long user of OCLC’s ILLiad platform. 2019 marked the year when the relationship with that system ended as our two interlibrary loan departments migrated to Tipasa, OCLC’s new cloud-based system. The platform change did not stem from dissatisfaction with ILLiad but from being informed that Tipasa would eventually replace ILLiad. This article covers three areas of the implementation: communication, staff training, and outreach. Explained is the communication had between library staff and OCLC representatives, what our participation in online cohort training involved, and included are visuals used to inform our campus about Tipasa.

Abstract Student employees are an invaluable asset to academic libraries. They supplement limited professional staffing, allow for students to engage with their academic community, and give work opportunities to those currently enrolled in school. This article reviews several practical ways to train library student workers that both minimizes hands-on staff time and allows for high customer service and student employee success. Best practices include (a) a student worker training assessment, (b) explicit student worker policies, (c) an annual mandatory training session, (d) online training, (e) a focus on student worker retention, and (f) unique student worker roles.
