Cases as Minimalist Information
John Millar Carroll, M. Rosson
Cases are evocative narrative descriptions of a specific, real-world activity, event or problem. We are investigating cases as a minimalist information design technique, that is, as a design technique that (1) orients information to facilitate user action, (2) anchors information in activity, (3) prevents, mitigates and leverages error, and (4) develops user autonomy. We describe recent experiences employing case-based learning in an undergraduate usability engineering class. We discuss the next steps in a research programme on case-based learning, and speculate on other applications of cases as minimalist information design.

Online Trust Production: Interactions among Trust Building Mechanisms
M. Chang, Waiman Cheung
Lack of trust has been identified as a major obstacle to the adoption of online shopping. However, there is paucity of research that investigates the effectiveness of various trust building mechanisms, especially the interactions amongst these mechanisms. In this study, three trust building mechanisms (i.e., third-party certification, reputation, and return policy) were examined. Scenario survey method was used for data collection. 463 usable questionnaires were collected from respondents with diverse backgrounds. Regression results show that all three trust building mechanisms have significant positive effects on trust in the online vendor. Their effects are not simple ones; the different trust building mechanisms interact with one another to produce an overall effect on the level of trust. These results have both theoretical and practical implications.

This case study was commissioned by the Office of Force Transformation in the United States Department of Defense to examine the employment of Network Centric Warfare (NCW) systems and practices in the U.S. Fifth Fleet's Commander Task Force Fifty (CTF-50). The staff and commander of CTF-50, embarked on the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), led a coalition force of 59 ships in combat operations against Afghanistan during the execution of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). The task force adopted a number of networking and collaboration tools that had significant effects on how CTF-50 was able to plan and execute missions in the Arabian Gulf and Afghanistan. This case study draws on NCW, technology adoption, decision-making and human communication theories to examine and explain the behavior of NCW system users.

Facilitating e-Negotiation Processes with Semantic Web Technologies
Dickson K. W. Chiu, S. Cheung, P. Hung, Ho-fung Leung
Semantic Web technologies have recently been maturing to make e-commerce interactions and cross-organizational processes more flexible and automated. Ontology has also been developed in various business domains. However, researches in Semantic Web have largely focused on the facilitation of successful matchmaking but not much on the negotiation upon matchmaking failures and exceptions. In this paper, we propose a novel application of Semantic Web technologies for the facilitation of e-Negotiation processes. We discuss how the elicitation of negotiation issues, alternatives, and tradeoff can be streamlined. We further propose a novel methodology for the elicitation of dependencies among negotiation issues so that negotiators can focus on tradeoff among inter-related issues, instead of arguing about single issues. A negotiation plan can thus be derived to observe negotiation orders across different issues. As a result, negotiators can have a better cognition of their negotiation tasks and the overall e-Negotiation process can be streamlined. We are extending a negotiation support system to demonstrate the feasibility of our approach, which is the most useful to repeatable and semi-structured negotiations in business-to-business (B2B) e-Commerce and e-Marketplace envi-ronments.

Information and Data Management and Analysis for Large Systems
T. Overbye
Managing the operation of large, networked systems is becoming increasingly complex. Often, critical information about the system is getting lost in a tidal wave of data. A particularly germane example is the electric power grid, as evidenced by the problems experienced in the August 14th 2003 blackout. One of the key causes of the blackout was the people operating the system in various regions through the eastern part of North America did not have access to the “big picture.” The focus of this mini-track is on the management, analysis, and visualization of systems characterized by extremely large sets of data that cover spatial, temporal and contingent dimensions. The mini-track contains four papers.

An Assembly and Execution Shell for MultiAgent Systems
G. Jayaputera, A. Zaslavsky, S. Loke, Nigel Watson
This paper presents a novel approach to design and develop an assembly and execution shell for multiagent applications based on the concept of a mission. A mission is a live evolving object that contains data, current variables, goals and evolution history of the mission itself. By maintaining the states and data inside the mission, it is possible to suspend the multiagent system's mission execution temporarily and resume when permitted. Our design allows run-time and dynamic agent generation depending on the complexity of the mission itself. We discuss the design and internal structure of the mission, the strategy and efficiency of the system in executing the tasks in the mission, and present our prototype system called eHermes.

Optimal Information Retrieval under Asymmetric Information in Constrained Power Markets
S. Nuchprayoon, M. Begovic, D. Novosel
The problem of asymmetric information in electricity market is due to uncertainty in determining individual cost functions in assessing the participants' bids. Individual loads or demand functions are assumed to be known to all participants. Based on the information asymmetry, it is proposed that individual generators may attempt to optimize their operating profits by making assumptions about the uncertain information. Each generator selects a supply bid curve as the best response to all simulated bidding scenarios. After observing the actual outcomes and performing sensitivity analysis from the most similar bidding scenario, the bids are adjusted for subsequent use. The optimality of the decisions may need to be altered by the power system constraints. The objective of the paper is to provide a possible way of extracting information from the bidding process rather than analyzing the strategic behavior of the generators.

Trust and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Adoption within an Alliance
Geng Yang, S. Jarvenpaa
This paper focuses on trust in the adoption of newly emerged interorganizational systems (IOS) -Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems-in contractual alliances. Much of the prior research on IOS adoption has concentrated on relationships where one of firms, such as Wal-Mart, has had considerably more power and influence than others. This paper examines alliances where member firms have balanced power and where full cooperation of all related members is required to achieve the full benefits of technology implementation. We propose that different social categories within an alliance, especially categories formed by the differential use of RFID, play an important role in shaping group members' perceptions and beliefs about RFID systems as well as about each other, and their decisions about adopting the systems. The paper enhances our understanding of IOS adoption by incorporating into the analysis the characteristics of the group of organizations making up the alliance.

Factors Impacting Customers' Initial Trust in E-Businesses: An Empirical Study
Euijin Kim, Suresh K. Tadisina
Developing customers' initial trust in e-businesses is critical for many online vendors, especially for startup companies. As an effort to understand initial trust in the business-to-customer e-commerce context, this study uses previous studies and logical reasoning to define initial trust and examines its predictors. Empirical results explaining the factors impacting customers' initial trust in e-businesses are also presented. The results indicate that website quality, among others, has the most significant impact on customers' initial trust in e-businesses.
