K. Shankar, K. Eschenfelder
This article will explore how organizational theoretic approaches to understanding institutional sustainability could be applied to contemporary data archives and archival practices, with the aim of raising larger questions about data sustainability. The article is part of a larger study in progress of how one particular example of long-lived archives, Social Science Data Archives (SSDAs), have maintained themselves over time. SSDAs predate both computers and the Internet and provide a unique opportunity to examine perceptions about what makes an archive sustainable, through the ups and downs of funding cycles and massive changes in technical and organizational infrastructure.

In this article we introduce the work of the National and State Libraries Australasia Digital Preservation Technical Registry project. Any technical registry model must allow digital preservation analysts to understand the technical form of the content they are tasked with preserving, understand the capabilities they have in relation to that content, and reflect on the community position in relation to those capabilities. We believe the solution outlined here is well placed to deliver the information required to answer these questions, and in a manner that makes it easy to understand, reference and augment. The primary focus of this article is to describe the format model, which is the most radical part of the Digital Preservation Technical Registry. The flexibility the model provides delivers on all of the requirements outlined by the NSLA partners and project team members; this includes the ability to reference many layers constituting a format, including relationships between specifications and implementations of real-world formats. We seek input from members of the community on the model and suggestions for use cases and requirements that we have not envisaged.

The process undertaken by an information seeker, in order to form relevance decisions regarding documents, is defined as “Document Triage.” To better facilitate users’ needs in their triage activities, interactive interfaces have begun to evolve within on-line academic repositories. In order to complement current work on interface design and interaction, and produce custom guidelines to inform the creation of triage interfaces, we examine how interfaces that alter the document presentation and structure affect information seekers’ visual and navigational attention. We present a set of heuristics for both creating and evaluating such interfaces.

Engineering and Science projects are facing new data management challenges, which are currently being addressed through the development of data management plans. However, project stakeholders are unable to proper assess if their plan is representative of good data management practices. To address this issue, we propose a risk management framework to assist the definition of a data management plan in engineering and science projects. To validate our proposal, we present an application to a civil engineering project concerning dam safety.

This article considers some of the issues created in the preservation of digital artifacts by the entanglement of object creator, mediating processes, and object viewer. This includes the relationship between format and software characterization, the sometimes complex manner in which software engineering practice, even best practice, complicates the use and intelligibility of software over the long term, and the need to preserve not just versions, but also variant renderings of the same version of an artifact.

In spite of significant efforts to align policies and technologies to enable digital preservation, one commentator has recently noted that a shortage of money is the greatest threat to the long term future of our digital heritage. This article describes the work of an EC-funded project, the Collaboration to Clarify the Costs of Curation (4C), with particular reference to a gap analysis and stakeholder needs survey which have been completed and early drafts of an Economic Sustainability Reference Model which is now available for comment. All of this will help the project to offer a “Curation Costs Exchange” service.

The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of the current state of scientific data sharing that stakeholders could use to develop and implement effective data sharing strategies and policies. The study developed a conceptual model to describe the process of data sharing, and the drivers, barriers, and enablers that determine stakeholder engagement. The conceptual model was used as a framework to structure discussions and interviews with key members of all stakeholder groups. Analysis of data obtained from interviewees identified a number of themes that highlight key requirements for the development of a mature data sharing culture.

Traditional, peer-reviewed, and formally published communications are a staple of the scholarly record. So too are the informal communications of scholars. Blogs may be seen to represent such communications. But, are blogs scholarship? Though blogging is ongoing in academe for about a decade, there is limited empirical reporting on how blogs are perceived as both a product and process of scholarly communication. This paper reports select findings from a descriptive study of blogging scholars from the fields of history, economics, law, biology, chemistry, and physics. Findings, drawn primarily from 153 completed questionnaires, are complemented by select interview excerpts and blog analysis data. Most questionnaire respondents (80%) consider their blogs as a component of their respective cumulative and persistent scholarly record, with a majority (66%) agreeing that their blog satisfies the criteria for scholarship for unpublished communications. Blogging is seen to contribute to improvements across multiple aspects of respondents’ scholarly lives and leads to invitations to publish, present, serve, and collaborate. These results are of use to blogging scholars, as support for their activity; administrators and peers, to provide context for assessing the potential value of these communications; and information organizations, including libraries and archives, to inform considerations for collecting and stewarding these communications into the future.

Describing and Preserving Digital Object Environments 描述和保存数字对象环境
Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2013-11-01 DOI: 10.1080/13614576.2013.842494
Angela Dappert, Sébastien Peyrard, Carol C. H. Chou, J. Delve
A digital object is not usable without a computing environment in which it can be rendered or executed. If we want to ensure the long-term usability of digital objects, so that they can be used in the face of changing formats, software, and hardware, it is necessary to either preserve their computing environments or to, at least, gather enough information, so that the computing environment can be reconstructed or adapted to a changed world. Digital preservation metadata is the information that is needed in order to preserve digital objects successfully in the long-term so that they can be deployed in some form in the future. Information that describes the sufficient components of the digital object's computing environment has to be part of its preservation metadata. Although there are semantic units for recording environment information in the de-facto standard for digital preservation metadata, PREMIS, these semantic units have rarely, if ever, been used. Prompted by increasing interest in the description of computing environments, this article describes requirements and solution proposals for defining an improved metadata description for computing environments.

Prompted by increasing interest in the description of computing environments, this article describes requirements and solution proposals for defining an improved metadata description for computing environments.","PeriodicalId":35726,"journal":{"name":"New Review of Information Networking","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13614576.2013.842494","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60358615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
