ABSTRACT Everything we do, create, and produce, such as intellectual and artistic works, performances, and so forth, can be defined as culture. We own a very rich cultural heritage of the past. Yet, the common cultural heritage that belongs to the humanity continues to be looted and destroyed due to negligence, armed conflicts, and wars. In this article, the causes of the destruction of cultural heritage and the question of to whom the neglected cultural heritage belongs are discussed and the economic and social values of cultural heritage are examined by means of the game theory.

ABSTRACT There are numerous research articles on web service, composition, modeling, verification, and other problems. These research works are performed on the basis of formal methods, such as petri-net, pi-calculus, automata theory, and so on. Pi-calculus is a natural vehicle to model the mobility aspect in dynamic web services composition (DWSC). However, it has recently been shown that pi-calculus needs to be extended suitably to specify and verify DWSC. In this article, we consider the authority model for DWSC, extend pi-calculus in order to model dynamic attributes of system, and propose a automatic method for modeling DWSC based on extended pi-calculus.

WordPress, a popular web site creation framework with powerful functionality, is an excellent candidate as a platform for creating on-line digital archives. However, it has certain functionality that works against the rigorous, semantically meaningful recording of data. Consequently, where it is used as an archival platform, semantic fidelity to original artifacts is almost certain to be compromised. This article discusses a tool, Músgraí WYSIWYM WP, which I created to address this problem; specifically in the context of older written and printed Irish and Scottish Gaelic texts, whose orthographies include characters no longer in common use. Color versions of one or more of the figures in the article can be found online at www.tandfonline.com/rinn.

In the light of technological and cultural changes, a question that digital archives face is: Which characteristics of our assets must be preserved to keep them usable and authentic? The concept of significant properties, which can be thought of as the “essence” of a digital object, provides one possible answer. The GESIS Data Archive for the Social Sciences (DAS) currently determines the significant properties of the data it preserves. We describe the procedure used to determine the significant properties of our digital assets, present first results of our work, and give an outlook on work still to be done.

The archives of Trinity College Dublin represent the corporate, administrative, and cultural memory of the university. This hybrid collection presents several challenges in relation to its management and long-term preservation. Appropriate storage conditions are vital for analogue records, as is the exercise over them of physical and intellectual control. However, born-digital archival records require the preservation of not only their data, but also evidence of their authenticity. For archivists, meeting these preservation challenges necessitates the integration of digital preservation strategies into traditional archival practices, advocacy of good records management, as well as close co-operation with legal and IT professionals.

The Dúchas project involves the digitization of heritage material collected in the Irish Folklore Commission Schools’ Scheme. This collection contains a small amount of stories that make derogatory reference to named individuals or families. Digitization and publication in an online database makes the sharing of this material online remarkably easy. To this end, a set of guidelines regarding the identification of sensitive material has been developed and pages marked as containing such material are automatically withheld. This article discusses the formulation of those guidelines as well as the technical solution for withholding such material.

Informed by research over the past two years and the work of colleagues in peer institutions, the IFI Irish Film Archive developed a six-year Digital Preservation and Access strategy which launched in 2014. Fundamental to this Strategy was the design and installation of digital archive tools for long term preservation and the redesign of workflow practices to facilitate accession and management of high resolution digital film and broadcast assets and associated metadata. This article outlines the steps taken and standards applied in developing a future proof digital audiovisual archive.

E-ARK (European Archiving of Records and Knowledge Preservation) is currently introducing standardization, new tools, and infrastructure into pan-European digital archival systems. The results of this pilot project can be applied to higher education where research data centers are required to preserve data for re-use in accordance with new open policies. We elucidate how the E-ARK best practice survey has informed the development of new information packages for ingest, preservation, and re-use, and show how these can be applied to the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences with practical exemplars such as census data.
