This research aims to understand the art discourse that is the foundation for developing modern fine arts in Surabaya. Art discourse represents the fundamental ideas behind the creation of artworks, which are developed and dialectically discussed within the context of the art ecosystem in Surabaya. The research design is based on an analytical, historical research method with a sociohistorical approach. The findings reveal the existence of continuity and change in art discourse from the Aksera generation (Academy of Fine Arts Surabaya) in the 1970s to the post-Aksera generations, namely the 1980s and 1990s generations. Three bases of art discourse emerged as the core expressions of aesthetics in modern fine arts in Surabaya during the 1970s to 1990s: 1. The discourse of nationalism (identity) underlies the art discourse of the Aksera generation; 2. The discourse of the market (commodification of art) becomes the main concern of the 1980s generation; 3. The social-political discourse serves as the platform for the art discourse of the 1990s generation. These three discourses demonstrate similarities and differences within the context of art discourse that evolved in modern fine arts in Indonesia.

Little is known about the methods and effects of parental involvement in art education. The aim of our systematic literature review is to explore the types of parental involvement in four branches of art (music, dance, visual arts, and theatre). We conducted our research with the help of the EBSCO database, using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) procedure. We found that the share of the different artistic fields is highly disproportionate in the literature on parental involvement. Compared to music, theatre, dance, and visual arts, coverage is negligible. During our study, we managed to classify types of parental involvement and found that it showed variety across different branches of art.

The relevance of the presented paper is conditioned upon the fact that today, the subject of the development of moral values in children with visual impairment through musical motifs of folklore is a very understudied issue. However, based on the statistics of the World Health Organisation for 2021, about 2.2 billion people worldwide have visual impairments. The purpose of this paper is to study the features of the psychological and pedagogical characteristics of children with visual impairments, their moral development, and the development of ways of spiritual and moral education through folk music. To achieve this purpose, the following methods were used: analysis, synthesis, comparison, induction, statistical analysis, and deduction. In particular, the method of statistical analysis of sources of American, Kazakh, and Russian researchers within the boundaries of the subject was used. The practical basis was the statistical data of the WHO company for 2021. The result of the study was a complete analysis of the statistics of children with visual impairment in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The study’s main conclusion is that modern methods of teaching children with visual impairment are based on the musical accompaniment of educational activities since the musical form allows the development of moral values. Visually impaired students are characterised by insufficient development of the visual-imaginative level of mental activity, which determines the uniqueness of specific conceptual thinking due to visual perception disorders and limited visual experience. The alienation of a child with visual impairments from others entails secrecy and lack of communication, which can be expressed in a large volume of complexes in the future. The applied value of this paper lies in the development of recommendations for improving the system of pedagogical education of children with visual impairment through folklore-applied developmental classes.

Barongan Blora is a traditional folk dance in Central Java that has existed since 1830. The passage of time brings up new social conceptions that influence the implementation of Barongan performances, particularly those relating to gender. This research aims to look into the gender roles of Barongan dancers and how they interact with social and cultural components of society. Gender interpretation aims to understand the social construction of men’s and women’s roles in society. These roles include male and female dancers whose motions express diverse traits while maintaining the performance’s significant values. This study employs a qualitative research design with case studies on various Barongan groups in Blora, Indonesia. In May 2023, data was gathered through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results suggest that cat motions dominate the Barongan dance steps, which are supported by strong, energetic, and nimble characters. On the other hand, each character’s movements are tailored to the roles and the dancers who portray them. Male dancers are cast as characters who appear strong and emphasize masculine attributes, such as Barongan, Gembong Amijoyo, Joko Lodro, Untup, and Nayantaka. Meanwhile, female dancers who play male characters, such as Barongan and Jathilan, must be agile, strong, and feminine. Gender distinctions in Barongan performance can be noticed in the movements created. Still, there are no substantial disparities in physical appearance between male and female dancers because both needed a physique corresponding to the characters being played. The Barongan performance also impacts society’s social and cultural features. Regarding social qualities, Barongan embodies the populist traits of the Blora people, which are based on humanist principles. In terms of culture, Barongan Blora has evolved to keep up with changing times, yet it remains and can be appreciated by all levels of society. Due to its uniqueness, Barongan’s preservation is still carried out in line with the times while maintaining cultural values and content in physical and non-physical forms.

This study intends to examine wayang kulit purwa performances [from Central Java] of the plays Réyog Ponorogo and Sang Batara Sambo “Prahara Suralaya,” created by Purbo Asmoro (2022). Both of these works are fascinating to study because in addition to the fact that they are allusions to topical conflicts [in Indonesia] presented in the form of social commentary, the structure and texture of these performances differ from the treatment of wayang purwa performances in general. This problem is studied based on the ethnoart paradigm, using the Interpretation (Sanggit) and Treatment (Garap) Theories and critical analysis. Research data was collected through literature studies, documentation studies, and interviews. The results of the study show that the social criticism revealed in lakon Réyog Ponorogo is blatant, while the social criticism in lakon Sang Batara Sambo “Prahara Suralaya” as a whole is equivocal, but in the closing scene it is blatant. In creating a ‘new’ lakon, the dalang must master various references—both written and spoken—which will later be used as hipogram texts, interpret various hypogram texts into a story, and translate them into lakon wayang. The artistic ability of the dalang greatly influences the quality of wayang performances, the ability of the dalang to choose the elements of pakeliran treatment to be highlighted in each scene, the dalang’s ability to organize the performance supporting team, and the ability of the dalang to read the situation of the audience.

Aesthetic morphology does not judge whether a work is good or bad but is a study of form in art that focuses on description, comparison, and stylistic analysis. Aesthetic morphology emphasizes great attention to the discussion of form, content, and style. However, this theory is still general, and there needs to be more research that explicitly discusses how it applies to animated artworks. This research will use the Comprehensive Literature Review (CLR) method. CLR is a methodological approach for critical and in-depth research activities on a particular topic in several stages of the research process. The CLR research process consists of three phases: exploration, interpretation, and dissemination. The result of this research is that the form consists of aspects of animation design, movement and kinetics, and sound and structural design. The content aspect consists of 2 main elements: story and character. Meanwhile, the style aspect is influenced by two main elements, namely the technology used in the production process and the appearance of the animation. The results of this research are expected to be used to explore the characteristics of animation works of certain creators, countries/locations, or periods in the history of the development of the aesthetic form of animation in the world.

Blind children can benefit from music education as it enhances their musical skills and auditory abilities. However, blind children in China face challenges in pursuing music education due to issues such as social stigma and lack of qualified teachers. Moreover, research in this area is lacking. On the basis of the PERMA (positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment) framework, this study attempts to identify the positive psychology of blind children’s piano learning among teachers, blind students, and parents. This study aims to to fill the research gap of piano learning among blind children. Interviews were conducted with piano teachers, blind students, and their parents (N=56) using a qualitative research methodology through PERMA framework. The data identified that piano teachers’ instruction was influenced by their preparation of teaching and personal attitudes. Findings also revealed that the positive emotion, sense of engagement, and positive relationships, impacted the accomplishment and achievement of all participants. This study demonstrates that teachers’ preparation experience and positive attitudes, engagement, and building rapport with blind children and their parents are crucial to promoting their piano learning. This study offers readers the chance to get insight into the field of piano instruction for the blind as well as illumination from thought and empirical support for piano teachers and music educators in inclusive music education in China.

This research aims to seek clarity from a historical perspective to trace back the transmission and the remains of Gregorian chants in eastern Indonesia. This study also seeks clarity from a historical perspective to trace back the Indonesian situation prior to the arrival of the Portuguese. The Madjapahit Empire (1293-c1520) dominated historical events as the first attempts to unify the country. The research method employed in this study was a critical historical method to analyze treatises of Gregorian chants in eastern Indonesia, with the remains still being found today and known as the Holy Friday Procession in the islands of Flores. Under Gadjahmada’s hands, an ordinary-ranking officer who succeeded in becoming prime minister (Mahapatih) of the Madjapahit kingdom, the initial attempt at pan-Indonesia was successful, but the whole history of united Indonesia was dramatically declined by the death of Gadjahmada and since then united Indonesia was collapsed. When the Portuguese arrived in Indonesia, followed by the Dutch, British, and Japanese, there was no such single authority in Indonesia. The foreign powers trickily, exacerbated the situation and transformed themselves to strengthen their stronghold as occupiers. This important historical event was not known by the people of Indonesia in general and by the Indonesian historian in particular. Therefore, this research is more important to be done today than later.
