Aydinlanma Cagi ve Fransiz Ihtilali ile baslayan milliyetcilik ve modernizm dusuncesi, Turkiye ve Afganistan gibi geleneksel bir toplumdan modern bir topluma gecis yapan ulusdevletleri etkiledi. Afganistan’da Kral Amanullah Han (1862-1960) doneminde (1919-1929) yapilan reform hareketleri ve Turk-Afgan dostluk iliskileri sonucu cesitli alanlarda uzmanlar Afganistan’a gonderildi. Bu ikili iliskiler cercevesinde devam eden Afgan ordusunun modernlesmesi kapsaminda gonderilen askeri heyetin icerisinde askeri muzik alaninda da egitici personel bulunmaktaydi. Askeri bando sefi, muzik ogretmeni ve besteci Halit Recep (Onut) Arman (1902-1981), 1933-37 ve 1938-42 yillari arasinda iki kez Afganistan’a askeri muzik ve bando calismalari icin gorevli olarak gonderildi. Afganistan’da bulundugu yillarda mizika ve fanfar takimlari teskil etmis, bando personeline muzik teorisi, nota okuma ve enstruman dersleri verdi. Numune Mizikasi adli kraliyet bandosunu kurdu, Mizika Mektebi acti ve alaylarda fanfar takimlari teskil etti, muzik kurslari acti ve kraliyet bandosu sefligini yapti. Egitim-ogretim, bando ve fanfar takimlari toren durus ve gecisi gibi hususlarda enstrumanlar icin metotlar yazdi. Bando calgilari icin Farsca yazilan metotlarda, calgilar icin perde ve aralik calismalari, kucuk morsolar, egzersizler, toren vaziyetleri ve Arman’in yirmiden fazla bestesi bulunmaktadir. Besiktas Deniz Muzesi ve Arsivi’nde elde edilen Farsca belgeler isiginda, once belgelerin transkripsiyonlari yapilarak ulus-devlet ve modernlesme temeline dayali olarak konu incelendi. Bu inceleme sonucunda simdiye kadar literaturde mevcut olmayan ve bilinmeyen Halit Recep Arman’in 12 adet bestesi ve 12 adet morso denilen kucuk muzik eseri tespit edildi. Tarihsel muzikoloji alaninda yazilan bu makalede, Arman’in yeni bestelerinin yani sira modernlesme ile degisen Afgan askeri muzik kurumlari, fanfar ve bando topluluklari alaninda da yapilmis olan calismalar incelenmektedi.

En muhim neden ise mezkur belgelerin (kapali) dosya envanter sistemine gore tasnif edilmis olmasi ve bu dosyalarin icerikleri hakkinda her hangi bir bilgiye ulasmanin mumkun olmamasidir. Arsivde bulunan dokuman tiplerinin cesitliligi ve tasnif sisteminin karmasikligi diger bazi nedenlerdir. Bu nedenlerden dolayi bahsi gecen belgelere ulasmak zorlasmakta ve arsivde calisma sureleri artmaktadir. Bu sorunun cozulmesi ancak, arsiv tasnif sisteminin iyi taninmasi ve arastirilan alanla ilgili en fazla sayida belge bulunabilecek fon kodlarinin bilinmesi ile mumkun olabilmektedir. Less well explored than the material supplied by European observers of Ottoman musicalpractice, that relating to the Safavid realm is nevertheless instructive, both for the glimpsesit gives of music as a social activity, especially in Isfahan, of the instruments used, and forwhat it reveals about the attitudes of the observers. The contributions of two of the mostperceptive seventeenth-century European commentators are surveyed here, together withthe attempts of an eighteenth-century encyclopaedist to grapple with a Persian theoreticaltext, reflecting a nascent concern with indigenous theory as Enlightenment thinkers developan interest in exploring the music of other cultures while at the same time becoming moreself-confident in their assumptions of European musical superiority.

About Conversation Τhe following conversation is what was humorously called a “jammin’ article”, which was an attempt to improvise a mostly theoretical dialogue on a variety of themes broadly defining Martin Stokes’ oeuvre until today. It is a sort of “free improvisation” produced in the course of spontaneous and rather intimate dialogic writing, as it developed as a non-prescriptive and open-ended process: there was no preset structure or any sort of detailed discussion about our writing strategy, neither any sophisticated editing. Moreover, it is in no way, neither has it aspired to become, an exhaustive overview of the plethora of issues pertaining Martin Stokes’ work, which besides would be impracticable given the article’s economy of words. Most important, such an overview would inevitably be incomplete, as Martin Stokes continues to be a prolific and highly impactful scholar and researcher. Instead, what follows is a specific knot of questions and reflections born out of the residuum of reading and digesting Stokes ever since the early stages of my ethnomusicological studies - questions and reflections also intuitively sculptured in the course of our “jamming”. I am deeply thankful to Martin Stokes for accepting my proposal.
