The paper is concerned with the process of developing the concept for the conservation, restoration, and reconstruction of the missing parts of the seventeenth-century candleholders from the Church of St. George the Martyr in Kaunas. The paper will review the issues encountered in the effort to find and select materials for the conservation and restoration of stone fragments. It will also describe the tests carried out during the process and highlight the role of chemical and non-interventional analysis as an auxiliary tool in the process of conservation and restoration.

This paper focuses on alternative options regarding the often highly time-consuming treatments to overpaint removal from wooden polychrome objects used in Lithuanian conservation practice. It aims to highlight the variety of approaches used throughout the European region. Based on the case study analysis, the four types of approaches that have been identified throughout the European region are mechanical, solvent, biological, and physical. The four methods found in Lithuanian conservation practice are mechanical ablation with a scalpel, organic solvent-soaked compress action followed by scalpel ablation, organic solvent-soaked swab action, and application of commercial paint strippers (commercial organogels). Five more methods that are used abroad employ self-modelled organogels, hydrogels, enzymes, heat, and laser radiation. The further analysis helped determine twelve removal systems based on the methods mentioned above. These are illustrated in the flowchart, providing information on each process step by step, which can serve as an aid when designing a case-specific approach. Subsequently, the author of this paper presents an application of a diversified removal system regarding multiple campaigns of overpainting on a wooden polychrome reliquary.

In the research, the case study deals with the interiors of catering establishments reflecting different models of the décor styles of the time. Government institutions have preserved the public interiors of buildings characterized by recurrent academic and historical motifs complemented by elements of the National style. On the contrary, the interiors of privately owned buildings of this period have been altered to fit new trends, with the dominance of the modernist style perceived to be part of Western culture. Furthermore, newly built structures were furnished following the modern trends of pure functionalism, hygiene, and light, with fragmented elements of the National style. The research assesses the importance of café culture in the formation of the Kaunas Phenomenon and proposes a project for revitalization and possible uses for the café and restaurant.

The article analyses the process of restoration of a painting from the Vilnius Academy of Arts museum collection and presents biographical facts of the artist. The basis for the analysis was the name of the artist, previously unknown to Lithuanian researchers, discovered by the author of this article during restoration. Several years of intense investigation led to the discovery of a world-renowned artist with a remarkable fate, with roots in Lithuania.

Each material is suited to the different paint material characteristics and pictorial techniques of various artworks by contributing to the pictorial surface’s stability and visual unity, and the ability to display it without interruption. For this article, the polysaccharide TRI-Funori was tested and used as a binding medium for chromatic reintegration in three oil and acrylic mockups of the artwork by Portuguese artist Jorge Martins. This choice was based on characteristics such as compatibility, low toxicity, water-based properties, and good visual properties for color matching. Advantages such as transparency and less tendency to yellow, capacity to dry matte, and ease of removal were observed. It presents good dispersion of inorganic pigments, good visual properties, and good adhesion to oil and acrylic surfaces with or without preparation. However, it also presents disadvantages such as weak dispersion of organic pigments, for example [PB15] Phthalocyanine Blue or [PR83] Carmine Rose, and the tendency to become powdery. During the drying process, it tends to lighten, making the color adjustment process difficult. The mimetic method, achieved with small dots, was used for retouching. The medium was applied with Ferrario® pigmenti puri and Winsor & Newton® powdered pigments, and chromatic reintegration was carried out with a fine brush Winsor & Newton® Finest Sable no1.

The article presents an overview of the course of conservation work on the house at 52 Polocko Street – one of the most beautiful wooden houses in Vilnius – and its adaptation for the Museum of Urban Wooden Architecture. It describes the steps taken before the restoration of the building, including the strategic decision-making and fundraising activity, as well as the search for the function to be served by the house. The article also reviews the applied research efforts, proposed solutions, and the analysis of issues faced and addressed in the process of the restoration and adaptation.

The conservation of banners with double-sided oil paintings has always faced the problem of integrating the textile part and the painting, which can no longer be solved. Either the conservation or the preservation method has to preserve the banner and the painting from further deterioration. There are very few publications on the conservation of church banners with oil paintings that highlight the main problems encountered in the conservation of these ecclesiastical objects. Most articles present the conservation of flags or painted flags, but there is no mention of the experimental aspect. There are even fewer articles on experiments with materials for the restoration of church banners. As museums deal with the problems of small storage and maintenance, the preservation of banners with oil paintings is at risk. This article presents an experiment carried out during my master’s studies at Vilnius Academy of Arts in the conservation of a church banner with the double-sided oil painting Assumption of Mary/Guardian Angel at the Lithuanian National Museum of Art. The experiment tested three different ways of displaying/preserving the banner with a double-sided oil painting.

The Church of Saint Leonard is positioned on a hill above a small village called Mala Ligojna in central Slovenia. The Baroque architecture shows elements of medieval origins. Under many secondary whitewashes, fragments of an approximately 500-year-old secco wall painting were discovered. The conservation and restoration project started in the year 2020 by removing the secondary coatings of limewash on the northern wall. During the work process, some challenges regarding the original painting were addressed and possibilities for uncovering and consolidating preserved intonaco and the paint layer were explored. Research on the binder, pigments, and the substrate was executed, which led to the use of a specific consolidation system. During the work process we researched the authorship of the painting. The research included the review of different Gothic stencils, brocade and border patterns, and the system of transferring the drawings and identifying the incisions. The patterns show similarities to some known Gothic wall painters in Slovenia, who inherited their knowledge from the masters of the international Gothic style. By carrying out projects like this, the church’s history is being revealed and the knowledge of the medieval wall paintings in Slovenia is expanding.

Conservation research has a main role to play during the decision-making process of restoration – how an object should look, what should be removed, what should be clearly exposed, and how to connect history and conservation with the aesthetic effects expected by the owner. In many situations we do not have enough historic material to fully establish this. In this article we would like to describe the process and steps taken during microchemistry research to identify the original technology used in the painting and gilding layers of a terracotta sculpture, dated to the late nineteenth century.
