ABSTRACT To help comparisons with model results, the present paper gives qualitative analysis of experimental results. Main beams configuration datas and material properties after 40 years are remembered. Experimental analysis is focused on initial elastic behaviour, ultimate beam capacity and rigidity evolution during cyclic tests. Difficulties about crack monitoring are pointed out.

ABSTRACT This article presents the numerical simulations carried out by the Central Laboratory of Public Works within the framework of the RGC&U project “benchmark of the Rance beams”. These simulations are based on simple modelling for the structural behaviour of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams subjected to simple tensile and bending tests. This modelling relies on classical principles of the strength of materials, including specificities such as tension stiffening and corrosion. In order to consider uncertainties related to the various parameters, calculations are carried out through a probabilistic approach by means of rough Monte-Carlo simulations. The results obtained are in good agreement with the experimental results, in particular concerning stiffness and load bearing capacities.

ABSTRACT This article presents the models and the assumptions retained by OXAND within the framework of the Rance's beams benchmark. This project deals with the numerical simulations of the mechanical behaviour of corroded beams. Numerical modelling is presented for two computer codes (Cast3M and Atena). The comparison between numerical and experimental results is presented for the two codes. The influence of various parameters on the results of simulations is also approached.

ABSTRACT This article deals with the modeling of the mechanical behavior of corroded prestressed concrete or reinforced concrete elements. The model is based on the formulation of a finite macro-element which takes into account the coupling between the loss of bond and the loss of steel cross-section due to corrosion. This model was used to predict the mechanical behaviour of the beams of the Rance. Comparisons between the experimental results and the model predictions, obtained without any fitting of the parameters show a good agreement. Corrosion phenomenon and its consequences (bond loss and steel loss) on structural performance, which is especially quantifiable on cyclic tests seems to be correctly taken into account in the model. However, the level of corrosion reached by the beams of Rance is overall low and remains insufficient to judge applicability of the model.

ABSTRACT Numerical simulations performed in the frame of the “Benchmark des poutres de la Rance” are detailed in this paper. A 2D model is proposed in which the various constitutive elements of beams are represented: for concrete, an isotropic damage model is used; for prestressing and passive steels, an elastoplastic strain hardening model is adopted. Corrosion effect is considered by reductions of steel cross-section and ductility. The bond between smooth steel and concrete is modeled with joint elements. The load carrying capacity is estimated for various hypotheses for monotonic and cyclic load: sound steels, reduction of sections without ductility, reduction of sections and ductility. The numerical results are finally compared to experimental database.

ABSTRACT The “benchmark des poutres de la Rance” research project contributes to the study of safety margin re-assessment and to the monitoring of prestressed and reinforced concrete structures in aggressive environment. Several academic and industrial partners are involved in this project: CEA, EDF R&D, CEBTP, LCPC, LMDC, LMT, LML, GéM, OXAND and IETcc. These teams are involved in researches and studies related to the mechanical effect of corrosion and the damage in civil engineering concrete structures. The paper presents a critical comparison of the experimental results and the numerical simulations (tensile and 4-points bending tests) performed by the different project partners.

ABSTRACT This article describes the elasto-plastic model that has been applied to analyse the beams damaged by corrosion. CONTECVET Manual, which contains the principles of this kind of structural evaluation, has been adopted. This Manual recommends considering the reduced section of the concrete and of the reinforcements as well as the possible reduction of the concrete steel bond. The first part of the article describes the basis of the structural model and, the mechanical behaviour of the materials. In the second part, the results of the experimental tests are presented and compared with the results of the model. The results indicate an enough good accordance, if the typical scatter of this type of experimental tests is taken into account.

ABSTRACT This paper deals with the simulation of impacts with the discrete element method. It shows a discrete model built up with polygonal rigid particles, which are linked by brittle beams. Two stochastic thresholds, for the tension and for the rotation of the beams, are implemented in the model. The contact, the algorithms for static and dynamic analyses, and the methodology for parameter identification are detailed. Finally, some study cases show this discrete element model is a good approach to simulate intermediate strain impacts with different crack patterns, depending on the load speed.

ABSTRACT An analytical model is presented for predicting complete shear load-deformation response of reinforced or prestressed concrete beams. Equilibrium, compatibility and stress-strain relationships are formulated in term of average stresses and average strains. according to the assumption of smeared cracks. This model is able to analyze sections having unusual forms or reinforcing details, loaded in combined bending, axial load and shear. Predictions of the model are compared with several tests on reinforced or prestressed beams and are shown to give a fair agreement with the experimental behaviour.
