ABSTRACT A simple but effective gravimetric method for determining the moisture diffusivity of concrete and cement paste is given in this paper. The method allows calculating the moisture diffusion coefficient and moisture distribution inside building materials purely based on the isothermal gravimetric measurements. The method was also applied to research into the properties of concrete and cement paste. Results indicate that the increase of water-cement ratio in the cement pastes will result in an increase of moisture diffusion coefficient. Furthermore, the experiment also points out the fact that moisture coefficient of concrete based on cement with fly ash additions is lower than that of concrete with OPC.

ABSTRACT This paper presents a review of complementary experimental and modeling studies of the link between microstructure and diffusivity of cement pastes. These studies were performed in the framework of the workgroup Concrete Engineering Barrier headed by Andra. Knowledge of the link between microstructure and diffusivity is needed to run properly the coupled chemical, transport and mechanical models used to assess the long term behavior of concrete in deep repository conditions. The first part of the paper is devoted to a description of the porous texture of ordinary Portland cement pastes, in particular obtained using Transmission Electronic Microscopy. The second and third parts are respectively dedicated to the presentations of an analytical method and a 3D numerical one, both of them aimed at linking microstructure and diffusivity of cement pastes.

Un certain nombre d'ouvrages de genie civil du parc de production d'EDF, principalement des barrages, presentent des pathologies de gonflement des betons dus a la reaction alcali-granulats (RAG). Afin d'evaluer les marges de securite et de fonctionnement de ces installations, et de maitriser les couts de maintenance, EDF et le Laboratoire Materiaux et Durabilite des Constructions (LMDC) ont developpe un modele numerique, integre dans le code aux elements finis Aster, permettant la simuler le comportement mecanique des structures affectees par la RAG. Le but de ce modele est d'evaluer les deformations et l'endommagement anisotrope (fissuration) des ouvrages atteints. En effet, de recentes recherches experimentales confirment que le gonflement du a la RAG devient fortement anisotrope lorsque l'etat de contrainte devient deviatorique. De plus, la cinetique et l'amplitude de la reaction dependant fortement de la teneur en eau et de la temperature du beton, le modele tient compte de ces phenomenes environnementaux. Par ailleurs, les fluages de compression et de traction jouent un role significatif dans le comportement des ouvrages, ils ont donc ete traites de maniere specifique. Une methode d'identification des parametres du modele est egalement proposee et le modele teste sur une campagne d'essais experimentale recente effectuee sur mini-structure au Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussees (LCPC) ; enfin, le modele est utilise pour modeliser le comportement du barrage de Temple sur Lot.

ABSTRACT During three years, experts and practitioners of non destructive evaluation have met under the auspices of AFGC (French Association of Civil Engineering) and COFREND (French Confederation for Non Destructive Testing). Their aim was to prepare a state of the art about non destructive evaluation of reinforced concrete structures. A book has now been issued, amounting about 500 pages, and providing such a State of the Art. It describes the needs and the existing practices. It gives advices for a best use of these non destructive techniques—NDT (when? how? for what?) and helps structural managers, answering their main questions. The book focuses on real case-studies, which show representative illustrations of what are the real problems and how they can be tackled. Thus NDT practitioners as well as structural engineers can also find answers to the their questions. This paper mainly details the sections of the book which are devoted to synthetic files and tables about the techniques.
