Museum managers constantly focus their efforts on gaining economic viability. This has become a key challenge as the offer of ‘experience economy’ attractions is increasingly rising and visitors are searching for experiences that are competitive. Although it has been stated that a picture paints a thousand words, the main objective of this research is determining if the relationship between museum image and visitors’ satisfaction significantly and positively influences their willingness to pay more. Partial least analysis was used to conduct the multi-group comparison by including the recently developed measurement invariance of composites (micom) and new permutation methods. A total of 529 valid responses of museum visitors were obtained. Interestingly, the findings showed that there were no significant differences between the two museum samples, and that all the relationships analysed were positive and significant. Interestingly, Henseler’s mga identified a slight difference between the two museum visitor samples in the linkage between visitors’ satisfaction and visitors’ word of mouth. This research proposes a multi-group comparison study examining two different samples of visitors to two superstar Mexican museums so that findings provide useful generalizations that imply academic and managerial contributions for the tourism industry. Keywords: multi-group, satisfaction, image, willingness to pay more, word of mouth

Sustainable tourism, as tourism that respects both residents and visitors, cultural heritage and the environment, can offer appropriate models for sustainable cultural heritage management and local economy development. Community participation is one of the fundamental principles of sustainable tourism. It was introduced in tourism studies more than three decades ago and elaborated through different methodological approaches and research. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate the local community perspectives regarding sustainable valorisation of cultural and archaeological heritage. The research was realised within the framework of ArchaeoCulTour, a recent scientific project whose main goal is to analyse the development potential of archaeological heritage through sustainable tourism in Istria County, Croatia. The research has considered the Municipality of Vrsar in Western Istria, a typical Mediterranean tourist destination, characterised by mass tourism and high seasonality, as a case study. The research has shown that the residents in the Municipality of Vrsar partially support the current tourism development model, faced with different sustainability challenges and many infrastructural problems. Residents are interested in being better informed and more involved in the tourism planning process and the participatory heritage management models. They agree that the main sustainability issues could be improved through sustainable valorisation of local cultural and natural resources by creating innovative tourism experiences, and they are interested to participate in this co-creating process. Keywords: tourism destinations, cultural heritage, sustainable cultural tourism, community participation

The purpose of this paper is to explore the issue of sustainable development of tourism in island destinations through the example of the island of Pag in Croatia. This paper aimed to find out the extent of sustainable tourism development on the island of Pag and to discover the factors influencing it. The primary research sought to determine what are the opinions and views of key tourism stakeholders about sustainable tourism on the island of Pag. The key research question in the paper is: Which model of tourism development is optimal for the sustainable development of the island of Pag as a tourist destination? The method of qualitative analysis was used, as well as primary research that combined interviews with experts and surveys. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the research results has been performed using interviews and survey results. The research took place during 2019 on the island of Pag. Key stakeholders of tourism on the island of Pag were interviewed, as well as an employee of the Tourist Board of the City of Pag. According to the empirical research, it was found that sustainable tourism is developing poorly on the island of Pag. Sustainable tourism development implies responsible management of the area, with an emphasis on natural and cultural heritage, and aims to meet the needs of tourists and needs of current and future local communities. Sustainability and sustainable development of tourism, especially in the islands as extremely fragile geographical, economic, and socio-cultural entities, are of particular importance. In doing so, it is necessary to apply an integrated approach. Keywords: sustainable tourism, mass tourism, sustainable tourist destination, seasonability, sustainable tourism on islands, the island of Pa

This article focuses on the search for intersections of quality management, continuous improvement systems, and innovation in the field of tourism. It contains introductory theoretical insights in all three areas and (in the research section) considers professional media to find validation for theoretical starting points and further development guidelines, additionally obtained through examples of good practices and their following of key trends. Through connections between theories and practical examples, the basis for the links between sustainability, quality, improvements, and innovation in tourism are introduced, followed by the resulting qcii model for improving and innovating quality tourism offerings at the destination. The suggested model should be (spontaneously or through careful planning) evolved to follow the concepts of smart tourism, both in terms of new technologies and their balanced deployment, and in terms of the harmonisation of interests and connections between all components of the destination system.

The present paper presents the results of the archival and field research conducted in the framework of the author’s research project ‘Valorisation of the common European heritage of Pula as the former main Austrian naval port and Brijuni Islands as an elite resort’ in Austrian archives, with the focus on the Kupelwieser Collection kept in the Austrian National Library. The research aimed to offer a new perspective in the elaboration of the key initial phases of the development ofmodern tourismon the Brijuni Islands, by analysing their important function as an aristocratic residence near the main naval port in a comparative and transnational framework. The main research question was whether Brijuni followed a European model of development of an aristocratic resort near a major port. Combining archival and field research, the author has explored and compared some of the well-known island aristocratic residences in Europe and theMediterranean,which developed as popular seaside resorts in the 19th and 20th centuries, such as the Isle ofWight, Mallorca, Corfu, and Brijuni. An overview of the available recent theoretical literature provided comparative insights into the search for such a model of the successful symbiosis of resorts and ports. As a case study, the author analysed the development of tourism on the Brijuni Islands in the most dynamic and dramatic periods before, during, and after the First World War, bearing in mind their importance as an elite resort in close proximity to Pula as the former main Austrian (Austro-Hungarian) naval port. Keywords: aristocratic residences, resorts, ports, Brijuni, Pula, tourism history

Research on tourism history has been mainly confined to considering tourism area life cycles (talc). Although destinations with a tourism tradition spanning over a century have undergone various life cycles, their tourism history has rarely been considered in the context of global changes, such as World War I, and how and to what extent these global changes have affected the development of tourism in the tourist area and tourism architecture. Since no direct hostilities took place in the area of present-day Croatia during wwi, the present paper investigates the indirect impact of the war as a global event on the rise of tourism at the time through unbuilt tourism architecture, which may be seen as halting investments in tourism. This research may be used to consider the creation of a model for global tourism life cycle by stages, including also paradigmatic changes in the design of tourism architecture.

Visitors to Greek Thermal and Seaside Spas (Mid-19th Century–Early 20th Century)

Melina Kostidi
Thermal tourism is considered the first form of tourism in the 19th-century Greek state. At that time, patients decided to travel to Greek thermal baths to seek therapy and pain relief. The first thermal spas in Greece can be considered ‘latecomers,’ because they began to develop after their counterparts in other areas of Europe, and they had few and limited facilities. However, in the mid-19th century, the urban space of Greek thermal spas and seaside resorts began to transform architecturally due to measures taken according to state policy and the increasing number of visitors. In this paper, I will attempt to study the architectural transformation of Greek spas and the profile of visitors and patients in the two phases of their development. My research is based on 19th-century primary sources (laws and doctrines, patient registries, medical reports, advertisements, postcards, novels and memoirs). I will assert that in the first stage of their development (1833–1890) Greek resorts had minimal accommodation and leisure facilities. Their clientele consisted of patients and trav-ellers from nearby locations who encountered the lack of proper medical care and accommodation establishments. In their next phase (1890–1930), the urban space of Greek spas was transformed to cater to the needs of a different clientele. Visitors to Greek spas were patients and holidaymakers who usually travelled with other family members. The square and the promenade of thermal spas and seaside resorts became centres of urban sociability. They stayed at luxury hotels, and they enjoyed the sociability of modern facilities (restaurants, theatres, and casinos).

At that time, patients decided to travel to Greek thermal baths to seek therapy and pain relief. The first thermal spas in Greece can be considered ‘latecomers,’ because they began to develop after their counterparts in other areas of Europe, and they had few and limited facilities. However, in the mid-19th century, the urban space of Greek thermal spas and seaside resorts began to transform architecturally due to measures taken according to state policy and the increasing number of visitors. In this paper, I will attempt to study the architectural transformation of Greek spas and the profile of visitors and patients in the two phases of their development. My research is based on 19th-century primary sources (laws and doctrines, patient registries, medical reports, advertisements, postcards, novels and memoirs). I will assert that in the first stage of their development (1833–1890) Greek resorts had minimal accommodation and leisure facilities. Their clientele consisted of patients and trav-ellers from nearby locations who encountered the lack of proper medical care and accommodation establishments. In their next phase (1890–1930), the urban space of Greek spas was transformed to cater to the needs of a different clientele. Visitors to Greek spas were patients and holidaymakers who usually travelled with other family members. The square and the promenade of thermal spas and seaside resorts became centres of urban sociability. They stayed at luxury hotels, and they enjoyed the sociability of modern facilities (restaurants, theatres, and casinos).","PeriodicalId":37187,"journal":{"name":"Academica Turistica","volume":"134 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79443917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this articlewas to examine the effect of the availabilityofhotel brands in a destination on the promotion of the destination. Data for this study were collected through online questionnaires from a diverse population. The respondents were reached via a social medium (LinkedIn, on which the author has an account) and membership in different tourism-related and non-tourism related groups. The tourism-related groups are made up of both professionals in the field and nonprofessionals. The data were analysed using descriptive analysis (tables, cross tabulation, and Spearman ranked correlation) with spss. It was discovered that hotel brands have little impact on the choice of destination to visit in comparison to other elements of a destination, such as attraction, transportation, and other supporting services. Therefore, a hotel brand cannot be used as the sole element of destination branding as it has little or no effect on branding a destination. Keywords: hotel branding, destination branding, destination marketing, destination promotion
