Lockdowns, pivots & triple shifts: early challenges and opportunities of the COVID-19 pandemic for women entrepreneurs

Abstract This paper explores some the first nationally representative survey data on the experiences of women entrepreneurs in Canada during the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic. It draws from the 2020 GEM Canada adult population survey (APS), collected in the summer of 2020 (June–August). Our focus is on women running early-stage firms (less than 3.5 years of age). Since the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic was a time of great flux and uncertainty, the GEM Canada data provides a valuable window on behaviours and attitudes ‘on the ground’ as entrepreneurs, along with local, provincial, and federal governments, worked to navigate through unprecedented risks. Guided by existing research on gender and entrepreneurship, our descriptive analysis explores women’s activity rates, business discontinuance, attitudes, growth aspirations, and key challenges and opportunities. The 2020 GEM Canada data highlights several areas of concern with respect to women’s activity rates and business exits, and their perceptions of opportunities. But it also reveals surprisingly positive attitudes and aspirations, and the identification of new opportunities for some women entrepreneurs. While our analysis is exploratory, and longer-term trends remain to be seen, the results reported here offer a valuable baseline following the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Differences between women- and men-owned export businesses: are women-owned export businesses more financially successful when they adopt an intensive export strategy?

Abstract Women-owned businesses are still underrepresented in terms of export activity. This study compares the financial returns that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) generate with women- versus men-owned export businesses. We examine competing hypotheses about how gender moderates the relationship between export intensity and SMEs' financial performance based on differing perspectives of women entrepreneurs. Based on these theoretical elaborations, we analyzed the export activity and profitability of 7,761 Canadian SMEs with women versus men owners. We found that women-owned export businesses achieve superior financial performance when they adopt an intensive export strategy. We discuss the implications of this finding for international entrepreneurship theory, practice and policy.

The efficiency of education and microcredit programs on young adults' independence
Q1 Business, Management and Accounting Pub Date : 2022-02-21 DOI: 10.1080/08276331.2022.2035170

Abstract This paper intends to evaluate the efficiency of programs aimed at providing youth education and microfinance services, as well as the direct and indirect impacts of such programs on the independence of the beneficiaries. The sample consists of 141 young adults in Indonesia; all of whom were beneficiaries of an NGO which focuses on youth development through education and microfinance initiatives. The free disposal hull (FDH) order-m technique employed in this study examines which initiative (education to youths or microfinance services for mothers) leads to the highest benefit (output) for the beneficiaries, given a certain level of cost (input). In operationalising the FDH, a composite index of independence that combines work status, work knowledge, self-determination, income, expenditure, and savings to measure the independence of the young adults was used as the output, and costs associated with implementing the programs serve as the input. The results indicate that in terms of output only, young adults whose mothers receive microfinance and no financial literacy training had the highest level of independence. On the other hand, when the costs associated with providing the programs are considered, the use of FDH order-m suggests no significant difference in the efficiency of the different programs.
