Abstract This paper studies the effect of the « Mobile Money » on the CEMAC economic growth. One of the poorest regions in Africa with the real growth rate of 1,6% registered those five years, and which is generally negative. the theoretical view, we have used two models which are: The quantitative theory of money and the endogenous growth theory to show that the use of the « Mobile Money » has a positive impact on the economic growth. The econometric analysis carried out using a panel model made it possible to show that the use of the « Mobile Money » is positively and significantly correlated with the economic growth rate of the CEMAC countries. Thus, an increase of 10% of the use ratio of the « Mobile Money » could lead to an increase in the economic growth rate of 1,87 point of percentage. From this result rise some economic policy recommendations, including the need for States to facilitate access to mobile phones by poor rural populations by investing more in the field and by granting tax incentives to operators in the sector.

Why are some family SMEs more innovative than others? We use the heterogeneity within family SMEs to explore how their socioemotional wealth (SEW) affects innovativeness. The ubiquity of smaller family firms means that their innovativeness is critical for policymakers, such as those in the United Arab Emirates, seeking innovation-led development. We conduct a multi-case study analysis of SEW and innovativeness in fourteen family SMEs based in the United Arab Emirates. Participants were from a range of sectors and across the employment size-range of family SMEs. None of the most innovative family SMEs had highly family-centric socioemotional wealth. High family-centricity was however evident in all the least innovative firms who survived on reputation and incremental customer or supplier-driven improvements. The least innovative firms were amongst the smallest but not the youngest, with firm age not influential for innovativeness. The paper proposes redressing family-centric SEW preferences to raise the innovativeness of family SMEs. This will involve longer-term decision-making that gives greater consideration to the interests of external stakeholder as well as future generations of the family.

Abstract Digitization of operations and processes and technology adoption by small and medium scale enterprise in the less developed and emerging economies (LDEE) has been slow or non-existent. Technology needs to guide new business creation, sustain competitive advantage, and survive in the post-COVID-19 pandemic and the interconnected global economy. Entrepreneurs need an awakening to the current transformation as the digital era is now, to create business ventures that can compete in the fourth industrial revolution engineered by advanced technologies. This paper doubles as a research note and a call for papers for a special issue to address these urgent needs in the face of current realities.

Abstract The scale of environmental and social challenges the world is facing today requires enterprises, both large and small, to develop sustainable innovative solutions that are economically, environmentally and socially viable. The purpose of this paper is to understand the sustainable innovation initiatives taken by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and small business entrepreneurs and the impact on performance. The paper presents a systematic literature review of research in the area. 63 publications, drawn from academic databases, on sustainable innovation initiatives taken by SMEs were identified and analyzed. The findings reveal that majority of the initiatives taken by SMEs are related to product and process innovations, and focus has been on SMEs in the manufacturing sector. The review attempts a value chain analysis that brings out the importance given to activities under operations and manufacturing to support the initiatives. The paper highlights the performance measures used to measure and control the outcome of the innovation initiatives. Additionally, the paper highlights broad research themes, links them through a conceptual model and identifies research gaps in this area. The findings of the study will help professionals identify potential areas for innovation and allow academics to conduct further research using the identified research gaps. Abstract Efforts to overcome low growth traps are ongoing worldwide. As high-growth startups substantially contribute to the economy, it is critical to understand what allows startups to achieve high-growth. Previous research has generally focused on high-growth firms and there is a lack of understanding in the difference between high-growth and general startups, especially in terms of innovation. To address this gap, this study examines the innovation characteristics of high-growth startups by analyzing Korean Innovation Survey data with logit regression and decision tree models. Previous studies have shown that high-growth firms are associated with product innovation. We show that process innovation is the most critical factor in creating high growth in startups. This result extends the finding of previous literature that process innovation not only increases the survival rate of startups, but also has a significant effect on achieving high growth. These results suggest that process innovation should be considered important when exploring innovation strategies or designing support policies for startup growth.

Abstract Financial performance (FP) is important to every firm, especially SMEs, but FP determinants are debatable. This paper investigates determinants of FP among Ghanaian SMEs. Employing a survey data set of 238 SMEs, multiple regression analysis was performed to determine the extent to which each firm-specific characteristic and industry impact FP. The findings show that a significant relationship exists between company ownership type and FP. There is also a positive link between firm age, firm size, and FP. The industry effect is significant in the service sector. The results also show that the impact of firm-specific characteristics and industry differs across the sub-components of FP and manufacturing and service industries. The results demonstrate the relevance of the tenets of resource base view and structure-conduct-performance in explaining the SMEs' FP variations in a developing country’s context. The managerial and policy implications of the findings for both sectors have been discussed.

Abstract To help small firms navigate changing rural markets, this study investigated how small businesses use social media to expand their customer and stakeholder networks to sustain their businesses. Focus group interviews with owners of small retail and service businesses were conducted in three selected rural Iowa communities. Our findings indicate that social media is an innovative marketing tool to promote interactive, collaborative, and personalized interactions with customers and stakeholders. These interactions enabled small businesses to attract new customers and foster commitment to the business. In addition, reciprocal relationships with stakeholders leveraged social media content creation and fostered social capital formation. However, social media integration poses challenges for many small businesses, due to operational, economic, infrastructural, legal and regulatory, and psychological factors. Our findings highlight education, legal and regulatory guidelines and policies, tools to measure the effectiveness of social media on marketing, and business assistance and support for small businesses to utilize social media to build customer and other business support networks. Implications support the potential for social media to enhance online interactions for these small firms, leading to the development of social capital, a valuable source of competitive advantage and business sustainability in rural markets.

Abstract The Far North of Cameroon has been weakened since 2014 by recurring attacks and suicide bombings orchestrated by the Islamic sect ‘Boko-Haram’. This article aims to analyse the moderating effect of this security crisis on the relationship between access to external financing by VSBs in their start-up phase and their sustainability. The data needed to conduct the study were collected, with a questionnaire, from 229 promoters of VSBs created between 2014 and 2018 and still operating in the Far North region of Cameroon. These data were then analysed using the logistic regression model. The results demonstrate a positive effect of access to external financing during the start-up phase of the VSB on its sustainability. However, it appears that the frequency of Boko-Haram attacks and the restrictive measures adopted by the government (border closures and curfews) are not conducive to the external financing of the VSB, let alone its sustainability. This result shows that the intensification of the security crisis experienced by all micro-entrepreneurs, combined with the challenges specific to their activity, has thus undermined the confidence they place in the future prospects of their business.
