Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of publications in the field of periodontology and implantology in Turkey. Material and Methods: A sensitive search strategy was developed to identify relevant articles, focusing on the periodontology and implantology research fields published two years before and after the declaration of the pandemic (March 2020). The search was performed through Web of Science, Medline, SCOPUS and CENTRAL databases. A three-stage screening (titles, abstract, full-text) was carried out in duplicate and independently by two reviewers. Results: A total of 382 studies were identified before the pandemic and 307 studies during the pandemic. While there was a downward trend in the number of observational studies (185 vs 168), the number of clinical trials (CCT/RCT) slightly increased compared to the pre-pandemic period (72 vs 74). Conclusion: Limited to the selected period of time (two years) and field, publication rate on periodontology and implantology in Turkey was decreased during the pandemic. Although the present research highlights current trends, large-scale investigations are needed to probe consequences of COVID-19 pandemic on research activities in the long-run (AU).

Objective: the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasonography in diagnosis of tempromandibular joint soft tissue injury after mandibular osteosynthesis. Material and Methods: ten male patients (20 joint) with age ranged between 20-28 years were collected from those attending the outpatient clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Al-Kuwait Hospital, Sana’a University. Patients were divided into two groups according to the number of fracture line in the mandible. All patients were randomly assigned to diagnosis of the soft tissue changes of temporomandibular joint by either ultrasonography or magnetic resonance image preoperatively, after 2 weeks and 3 months postoperatively. Results: preoperatively, there was moderate agreement between ultrasonography and magnetic resonance image in the diagnosis of abnormal findings in both groups, the difference was not statistically significant. In group I, ultrasonography of the temporomandibular joint didn’t detect any abnormal findings after mandibular osteosynthesis, meanwhile, magnetic resonance image recorded abnormal findings 40% and 20% after 2 weeks and 3 months respectively. In group II, the diagnosis of abnormal findings was the same (80%) pre and postoperatively by using magnetic resonance image however, the percent of abnormal findings was reduced from 60% preoperatively to 40% postoperatively by using ultrasonography. Conclusion: the ultrasonographic image was not able to identify or diagnosis the disc position changes after indirect trauma. However, it had to some extent a role in the identification and diagnosis of effusion in temporomandibular joint.

Objective: Scientific publication in a journal by a member of the editorial committee of the same journal is known as authorial endogamy. To determine the presence of authorial endogamy in some Latin American dental journals. Material and Methods: Observational, descriptive, retrospective study. Eight dental journals from Brazil, Cuba and Chile indexed to Scopus in the period of 2018 - 2021 were analyzed. An evaluation was made of the manuscripts that include a member of the editorial committee as author. The results were expressed in percentages and frequency measurements and for the bivariate analysis, the Mann-Whitney U test and Fisher’s exact test were used (p<0.05). Results: A total of 2026 articles, from which 14.52% (n=256), of authorial endogamy were found. The endogamy articles were mostly original articles 98.05% (n=252), experimental design 39.70% (n=102), advisory council 49.36% (n=153), co-authorship position 58.97% (n=184), with presence of 1 endogamic author per article 82.94% (n=214), the number of days from submission to acceptance were statistically lower in endogamic articles (p=0.003). Conclusion: The presence of editorial endogamy in some dental journals in Latin America was low, this finding is more frequent in original articles, mostly from the advisory board and as co-author. Additionally; it was found that endogamic articles took less days in editorial process.

Material and Methods: This is an experimental laboratory research with a design pre and post-test only control group design. Freeze-dried platelet-rich plasma and HA were applied at periodontal surgical sites in periodontitis induced Wistar rats’ mandibulary incisors. Bleeding on probing (BOP) was observed as a clinical aspect. Porphyromonas gingivalis was examined and counted. Meanwhile, the healing process was seen by examining fibroblasts and Platelet-Derived Growth Factor-BB (PDGF-BB) in histology and immunohistochemistry. In this study, BOP decreased faster after applying FD-PRP and HA. Data were processed by ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: Clinical examination by measuring BOP level showed better inflammation resolution at 14 th day (p=0.007). Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) count was also reduced in the treatment group (p=0.001 at 3 rd and 14 th day). The histology aspect by measuring fibroblast count (p=0.025 at 3 rd day and p=0.001 at 14 th day) and immunohistochemistry by measuring PDGF-BB expression (p=0.014 at 3 rd day and p=0.030 at 14 th day) showed better tissue healing. Conclusion: combination of FD-PRP and HA has accelerated the healing of periodontal surgical wounds.
