Resumo Este texto busca aproximar três textos literários forjados sob a forma de diário, analisando como neles se dá o uso de estruturas e características específicas da escrita diarística para compor narrativas ficcionais. Para tanto, é fundamental o pensamento de Maurice Blanchot, em "O diário íntimo e a narrativa", e o de Michel Foucault, em "A escrita de si". Assim, estabelecemos uma relação entre o último romance de Machado de Assis, Memorial de Aires, e dois poemas de Ana Cristina Cesar, "24 de maio de 1976" e "25 de maio de 1976". Além da escrita em forma de diário, destaca-se nesses textos as referências a outros textos, ou seja, a forte presença da intertextualidade.

Abstract David Damrosch argues that world literature is the locus of negotiation between a source and a host culture, with works increasingly being favored for exhibiting identities based on racial, ethnic, or cultural differences. We examine racial perspectives on Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839-1908) by English-language critics, largely in North America, from the late twentieth century to the present. In the twentieth century, Machado was successful among academics and critics but not the general public. In the twenty-first century, re-translations of his works have widened his visibility among the general English-language readership. His recent critical reception also reveals greater interest in his racial background. As a multiracial individual of partial African descent and the grandson of freed slaves, Machado has been situated in an African diasporic or Black literary canon as he is read from a racial perspective by North American critics.

Abstract This article analyses the short story ‘O Lapso’ (1883). It demonstrates how Machado de Assis connects social medicine and the capitalist system via a quote by the early Romantic writer Charles Lamb. Resorting to a fragmentary and ironic narrative style, the narrator recollects the story of how the Dutch doctor Jeremias Halma cures the nobleman Nicolau of a fantastic disease which prevents him from understanding why he has to pay for services. Through intricate intertextual references, Machado demonstrates how Imperial capitalism reduces social relations to an intense game of competition and self-interest, which characterises the coloniality of power in nineteenth-century Brazil.

Resumo O artigo retoma duas cartas trocadas entre Machado de Assis e Quintino Bocaiuva e desenvolve a ideia de que as observações deste, relativas às primeiras peças teatrais do escritor, e a atuação do próprio Machado como avaliador de textos dramáticos estimularam sua reflexão crítica sobre o processo de produção de romances. Nesse sentido, identifica procedimentos discursivos próprios da dramaturgia em Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas e em Dom Casmurro e salienta apelos de ordem sensorial que se projetam nas obras, atuando sobre a percepção do leitor e transformando-o em espectador de dramas ou de comédias, em que as personagens se comportam como atores.

Focusing on the 1881 short story, "A Teoria do Medalhão", I argue that the real "medalhões" are in the North American academy, those readers and critics who, I predict, are going to have trouble appreciating the brilliance and originality of the Brazilian master.

Resumo O conto "Pai contra mãe", de Machado de Assis, publicado em 1906 no livro Relíquia de casa velha, narra o desenvolvimento e desfecho de duas gestações: de um lado, a de Clara, que precisa decidir se abandonará o bebê na Roda dos enjeitados; de outro, a de Arminda, uma mulher escravizada que, grávida, foge de seu senhor. Com o olhar caracteristicamente afiado, Machado retrata a situação dessas duas mulheres, ligando-as pela ação do protagonista, Cândido Neves. O romance de Toni Morrison, Beloved (Amada), publicado em 1987, por sua vez, trata da trajetória de Sethe, mulher ex-escravizada que foge de uma fazenda com seus filhos e, quando perseguida pelo dono, mata uma das filhas para que não caísse nas mãos dos feitores. Neste trabalho, analisa-se a trajetória das duas personagens machadianas ao longo de suas gestações, atentando para como questões de raça e classe impactam na representação da gravidez, e coteja-se a narrativa brasileira com as questões apresentadas pelo romance norte-americano.

Abstract The present article adds to the growing literature on the publication of Machado de Assis in English translation. Along with the classic problems inherent in translation, such as word choice and meaning, there are issues regarding copyright and publicity: the right to print and the means of promoting and selling books, both crucial to the story of Machado in English. The question of book sales was never one of large numbers or best-seller lists. Nevertheless, this article uses archival material to show that the publisher, Cecil Hemley, and his translators, including Helen Caldwell in particular, tried their best in improvised and opportunistic ways during the 1950s to generate interest and foment sales. Before they could do this, they also had to contend with the thorny question of copyright. Finally, the article follows the fate of these translations after the Noonday Press was acquired by Farrar Straus in 1960.
