Taking a building that was overrun by the apparatus of the former communist regime and returning it to its former splendour is no mean feat. Political systems can, and do have an impact on architectural history, so starting afresh needs a considerable level of dedication. For an architect with many years of experience yet few projects to his name Zumthor's impact on the architectural world is immense. This is due more to an approach to the design process and working culture, an intuitive approach to publicity, and professional ethics. The publication of "Thinking Architecture" nearly twenty five years ago examining the connection between process, 3d modelling and architecture as a whole helped to define this architect's path towards design as a whole.

Mass housing estate or vertical housing estate, is this the new way to describe urban apartment blocks, or another form of advertising slogan? Developed for the rental market this project provides housing, car parking, commercial and co-housing facilities within close proximity to the city centre. The design being aimed at a younger target group, 20-35 years of age, looking for premium quality lifestyles and amenities. Time will tell if this social urban project succeeds in meeting the requirements of medium-term private investors and how it might impact the cityscape.

Inheriting a three-room home in his home village an architect faces the dilemma of needing to improve living conditions by felling a pear tree. Instead, he decides to negotiate the project around the tree. Choice of materials playing a key role: the existing traditional masonry house is extended using a lightweight timber framed addition, which protects the tree roots and affords the home a contemporary alternative. The home is formed in two parts, although both are similar in typology: both have an enclosed volume and a covered porch area, balancing internal comfort with external functions.

A client's dream to have a Scandina - vian styled home in Budapest took form when remodelling an existing villa in the Buda Hills. Faced with the problems of an extremely steep site, hard to access by car, and the need for will lit spaces the designers adopted the idea of reversing the home: entrance, garage and living spaces sitting above the bedrooms and ancillary functions. Working with brick cladding, raw concrete, and daylighting as design tools a balance between exterior and interior has been achieved. Whether or not the home is Scandinavian in style is open for question as it seems to fit comfortably alongside its contemporaries found in modern Hungarian architecture.

Childhood memories of openness inspired this idea to create a new office space rising from above and beyond an older street facade. Reuse of bricks from the former building found on this site link the new with the past even though the aesthetic is radically different. Perforation of all the buildings surfaces allows light to penetrate without losing a sense of enclosure, creative, strong, yet modest in character.
