Impact of organizational culture on quality management and innovation practices among manufacturing SMEs in Nigeria 组织文化对尼日利亚制造业中小企业质量管理和创新实践的影响

Abstract This study aimed to examine the impact of organizational culture on quality management and innovation practices among manufacturing SMEs in Nigeria. Empirical data were collected from 570 manufacturing SMEs in three states in Northern Nigeria (Kano. Kaduna and Katsina). A convenience sampling technique was used to obtain data from SMEs in the study area. The study used PLS model to test the hypothesized relationship and the results indicate that six out of the eight hypotheses were supported while only two were not supported. The study found that adhocracy culture, clan culture, market culture, and hierarchy culture were positively related to innovation. On the other hand, clan culture and market culture were positively related to quality management, while adhocracy and hierarchy cultures were discovered to be negatively associated with quality management. The findings revealed that SMEs that maintain aggressively, and results-oriented focus, remain results-oriented, with priority getting the job done, promote hard-driving competitiveness, high demands, and achievement. Thus, embark on aggressive competitive actions, remain committed to meeting targets, and define success by winning in the marketplace and outpacing the competition could improve both their innovation and quality management performance. Therefore, embracing a sound organizational culture could lead SMEs to more significant innovation and quality management performance.

Lean six sigma in the public sector: overcoming persistent management challenges 公共部门的精益六西格玛:克服持续的管理挑战

Abstract The implementation of Lean Six Sigma in the public sector has grown considerably in recent years and may be accentuated in times of global economic crisis. Even so, general aspects that can guide managers for its implementation in the public sector were not found in the related scientific literature. This paper proposes management guidelines for LSS implementation in public service organizations aiming to support the continuous improvement regarding their processes and results. The guidelines originated from LSS principles under management perspective and literature review on both LSS and public sector using the grounded theory method, being refined afterwards by experts in public management and LSS. This paper can encourage public managers to start a low-cost improvement process in the organizations and support the LSS continuity. Concerning the scientific contribution, this proposal provides a more comprehensive perspective on LSS implementation in the public sector raising persistent management challenges and being a starting point for new research on LSS guidelines directed to specific services within the public sector.

Determinants of fast-food restaurant service quality in the United Arab Emirates 阿联酋快餐店服务质量的决定因素

Abstract This research posits and empirically tests the relative importance of five key determinants of service quality in fast-food restaurants (FFRs, also known as quick-service restaurants) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Using a survey methodology, data were collected from 491customers to test the proposed model and associated hypotheses. The structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis results showed that assurance, responsiveness, tangibility, and empathy are significant predictors of perceived service quality of FFRs. However, reliability was not a significant predictor. This study is important because it is the first study that examines the determinants of service quality of FFRs in the UAE. The findings provide valuable insights for restaurant managers in the UAE to make informed decisions regarding the improvement of service quality of FFRs in the UAE. This study also contributes to the literature of FFR service quality by validating the SERVPERF instrument in a unique non-western country context.

Analysis of the motivations for ISO 9001:2015 adoption in the Brazilian business context 巴西商业环境中采用ISO 9001:2015的动机分析

Abstract This study aims to analyze the reasons that motivate Brazilian companies to implement Quality Management Systems, according to ISO 9001:2015 requirements. Based on information collected in the literature, a questionnaire was developed and answered by professionals that work with the mentioned standard in their companies. An Exploratory Factor Analysis was conducted with the collected data to group the validated variables into two constructs that present the most part of information variance. These constructs were entitled “internal improvements related motives” and “market related motives”. The findings of this research confirm and complement previous studies performed in Brazil and in other countries.

Gestão de riscos e a norma ISO 31000: uma abordagem literária 风险管理和ISO 31000标准:文献方法

O risco é um fato no âmbito empresarial, gerenciá-lo é a chave para que as empresas possam tomar decisões assertivas que resultem em obtenção de lucros e criação de valores para seus acionistas. O presente estudo tem como objetivo realizar uma revisão de literatura sobre gestão de riscos e analisar algumas características e aplicabilidades apontadas pelos os estudiosos sobre a norma internacional de gestão de riscos ISO 31000. Ao consultar alguns modelos propostos na literatura desse tipo de gestão, identifica-se pontos similares no processo, estes resumem-se em: i) Identificação dos riscos; ii) Avaliação; iii) Tratamento e iv) Tomada de decisão. A International Organization for Standardization (ISO) publicou a norma ISO 31000:2009 devido a necessidade de harmonização dos padrões, regulamentações e estruturas de recomendações feitas por normas anteriores, entretanto por ser um modelo generalista que visa propor diretrizes para a gestão de todos os tipos de riscos, alguns estudiosos criticaram severamente seus conceitos e recomendações. Em 2018, a ISO lançou uma versão mais atualizada da norma (ISO 31000:2018), com o intuito de solucionar algumas inconsistências existentes na anterior. Na literatura consultada, identificou-se diversas aplicações da ISO 31000 em modelos de gerenciamento de riscos de variados segmentos empresariais, e mesmo contendo alguns pontos a ser melhorados, conclui-se que as recomendações realizadas por esta norma são de grande relevância para ter-se como base na construção do processo de um modelo de gestão de riscos. Ademais, vale ressaltar que o presente estudo norteará o início da construção de um modelo de gestão de risco para uma determinada organização do estado de Sergipe.

This journal is the hub where we come to inform each other and share what we have learned about quality management. Indeed, a nice place to be on a cold winter’s day. Here is the roundup for this issue. The first article is “Selecting the best quality inspection alternative based on the quality, economic and environmental considerations” by Feri Afrinaldi and Harly Bobby Pratama of the Department of Industrial Engineering, Andalas University, Padang, Indonesia. In this article, the authors study different sampling plans using economic and environmental considerations. The method the authors propose resulted in a 12 percent reduction in carbon emissions instead of using rectifying samples. The second article is by Mohamed Ben-Daya, Elkafi Hassini, Zied Bahroun, and Bayan H. Banimfreg of McMaster University and The American University of Sharjah (UAE). It is entitled “The role of internet of things in food supply chain quality management: A review.” This review article looks at the internet of things in the food supply chain. The authors review the literature in this area and propose research topics for future study. This is an important area of study internationally, as more and more people are studying food supply chains and their quality impacts on people’s lives. The final article, “An empirical study on quality improvement in higher education institutions with reference to selected processes,” is by Rahul V. Mulay and Vandana Tandon Khanna of the Somaiya Vidyavihar University of Mumbai, India. This study follows the implementation of quality management processes in higher education in India. The improvement processes were effective in admissions, exam, and placement processes.

Mulay and Vandana Tandon Khanna of the Somaiya Vidyavihar University of Mumbai, India. This study follows the implementation of quality management processes in higher education in India. Abstract In their review of internet of things (IoT) applications in supply chain management, Ben-Daya et al. identified the food supply chain (FSC) as one of the application areas with greatest potential for reaping the benefits of IoT. In this paper, we focus on the FSC, conduct a literature review, and carry out a bibliometric analysis in order to better understand the potential, challenges and role of IoT and other enabling technologies such as blockchain on FSC quality management. Most of the literature focuses on the technology aspects in providing solutions to FSC challenges. The review also indicates that the literature dealing with models and decision support systems that make use of IoT data to enhance the decision-making process is limited. This is clear from the limited number of publications in operations management and related journals that usually deal with these issues. Based on the findings of this literature review, we provide possible research topics that take advantage of the rapid technological advances in the area of FSC.

Abstract Quality improvement plays an important role in higher education. The purpose of this study was to find the impact of quality (in terms of customer expectations) related to selected administrative processes in professional higher education institutions. The literature revealed that quality management in higher education studies mainly focused on teaching, learning, student issues, and infrastructure. Very few studies mentioned quality in terms of the administrative processes; hence, the authors saw the need to study this aspect. The study involved administering a survey questionnaire to students, faculty, administrative staff, and process owners in private engineering and management institutions. Data were collected from 12 engineering institutions and 8 management institutions. The total sample size was 725 respondents. Data analysis was done using Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) software. In this study, the admissions process was found to have the most impact on quality, and exam and placement processes also had a significant impact on quality. The authors recommend that private higher education institutions strive to improve and maintain good quality.

Selecting the best quality inspection alternative based on the quality, economic and environmental considerations 基于质量、经济和环境考虑,选择最佳质量检查方案

Abstract The use of inspection is unavoidable in many situations. For example, inspection is required to satisfy government regulation, guarantee quality parameter is met by the products supplied by new suppliers whose quality history has not been built, and mitigate product liability risks. There are three quality inspection alternatives, 100 percent inspection, no inspection, and sampling inspection. No inspection brings a considerable risk of shipping non-conforming products to the consumer. 100 percent inspection involves a slight risk of delivering non-conforming products to the consumer but consumes resources significantly. Sampling inspection requires the producer to judge products based on a random sample. Therefore, it still contains the risk of sending non-conforming products to the consumer. The risk and resource consumptions can cause the producer to bear for the cost and environmental impact due to rework, scrap, and transportation. This paper proposes a mathematical model and algorithm to select the best inspection alternative based on quality, economic, and environmental considerations. We apply the model and algorithm to solve a real industrial case study. The results of the case study show that the proposed method results in a lower expected total cost and CO2 emission and a better level of protection for the producer and consumer than the single sampling plan method widely used. We expect that the proposed model and algorithm can assist practitioners in the industry to select the best inspection alternative. It is essential to note that sampling inspection is not a substitute for proper process monitoring and control.
