It is known that the COVID-19 pandemic can be a cause of fear and anxiety. There exists a deep need to seek refuge from anxiety in a reality that would offer a sense of greater certainty. Within this framework, religion can be assessed in three different ways. Its negative assessment is linked with a pragmatic approach to the world. Alongside the negative assessment of religion, there is also a positive one. However, there is still a third possible approach, that of using religion as a response to the difficulties of the pandemic. Religion can function as a factor in rationalizing the time of the pandemic. Religion can also generate two strategies by which a person can respond to difficult situations. These strategies can be referred to as a kenotic one and a palliative one.

The article presents a synthetic analysis of empire criticism in Pauline letters, beginning with the omnipresence and character of imperial cult in Paul’s time. Subsequently, the author highlights the places in Pauline letters that are usually associated with anti-imperial rhetoric. The following part of the article critically appraises the arguments for the presence of an anti-imperial script in Paul’s letters. The conclusions critically assess the methodology and premises of empire criticism, which essentially ignores Paul’s argumentative context, refers to the problematic “hidden transcript,” and can be strongly informed by contemporary ideologies. According to the author, Paul does not fight with the Empire, accepting its institutions and social order and trying to change them from within. Although the apostle does not consciously use the anti-imperial script, the Good News he preached and the communities he founded possess an anti-imperial potential. In light of this, the article ultimately advocates a careful application of empire criticism to Paul, which can serve a better understanding of the New Testament background and the message of Paul.

Reprezentanci młodego pokolenia, podejmując przygotowanie do sakramentu bierzmowania, dają dziś ostatnią szansę wspólnocie Kościoła. Może ona ją wykorzystać do skutecznej ewangelizacji, bądź też, ufając w klasyczne, nieaktualne metody i założenia formacyjne, wykazać indyferentyzm wobec promowanej przez Ojca Świętego Franciszka koncepcji nawrócenia pastoralnego, tracąc tym samym kontakt z młodymi ludźmi. Perspektywa efektywnego przekazu Dobrej Nowiny kandydatom do bierzmowania, a także wzmacnianie w nich fundamentów wiary jest wyzwaniem duszpasterskim, wymagającym zmiany dotychczasowej mentalności. Młodzi w poszczególnych wspólnotach parafialnych mogą doświadczyć działania Ducha Świętego i piękna żywego Kościoła.

While the interpretation of the book of Esther has posed many challenges in the past, a key and well-recognized aspect of this text is that it presents a narrative behind one of the most important Jewish holidays, namely, Purim. As such, it also strongly influenced Jewish culture, including similar texts written to cultivate Jewish traditions in the diaspora. In this article, an analysis of possible intertextual connections between Esther and the apocryphal book of 3 Maccabees is presented. The latter was likely written for Jews living in Alexandria. While this topic has been studied in the past by several authors, in this article emphasis is laid on narrative similarity between both books. In particular, five key elements of this similarity have been identified, and additional parallel fragments have been presented. Their distribution and their likely origin from different versions of the book of Esther support claims about the possible origin of 3 Maccabees from a mature version of Esther.

Numerous scholars argue that the book of Ruth, with its story concerning mixed marriages of Judahites with Moabite women, consciously opposes the exclusivist rhetoric of the books of Ezra–Nehemiah. However, a detailed analysis of the narrative rhetoric of the book of Ruth, especially compared to the supersessive rhetoric of the roughly contemporary books of Samuel–Kings, reveals that the main purpose of the book of Ruth was to delegitimize the claims of the tribe of Ephraim to domination in Israel, and against this background to promote the tribe of Judah with its Davidic dynasty. Therefore, the book of Ruth most probably served as a rhetorical-ideological model for the much more elaborate, likewise consciously Judean narrative of the books of Samuel–Kings.

The article focuses on Michael D. O’Brien’s novel trilogy consisting of Father Elijah: An Apocalypse, Sophia House and Elijah in Jerusalem, inspired by the biblical books, particularly the Book of Revelation. The analytical-interpretive and comparative method applied in the article reveal the scope and purpose of parallelism used by the author in relation to biblical characters, events and situations. This parallelism has been introduced in contemporary novels set in the twentieth century, especially at the dawn of the twenty-first century. Biblical references, plots, allusions and, above all, the biblical vision of the world and humans become a gauge that allows diagnosing modern reality and the rapid changes that occur in it. The recognition and full understanding of ideas included in the work are possible only after reading the biblical content inscribed in the novel. It forms the basis of the assessment of a model of the world in which spiritual reality permeates the visible realm, with a simultaneous occurrence of psychomachy. From this perspective, the warning that the writer addresses to his contemporaries becomes apparent.

In this article, the author asks whether there are ideological and intertextual connections between the Targum Isaiah and the Gospel of St. John, and whether the traditions contained in the targums could have influenced the teaching of Jesus of Nazareth and the Apostles. The targums are first shown in their Jewish and Christian contexts. The author then turns his attention to the reception and significance of the book of Isaiah for the Jewish community and for the Johannine community. In particular, he emphasizes the use of this book in the synagogue liturgy and in the Gospel of John. The author also shows new interpretive perspectives for selected Johannine texts in light of the texts contained in the Targum Isaiah. He analyzes the Memra–Logos relationship, the messianic identity of the Johannine Jesus, the significance of Abraham in relation to the sons of Israel, the significance of God’s glory, the identity of YHWH’s suffering Servant, Jesus as the New Temple, and the use of the ego eimi formula in an absolute form. He encourages further detailed research on the influence of targumic traditions on the teaching of Jesus and on the Christology of the Fourth Gospel.
