The list of filial duties from the Aqhatu story constitutes a passage unique to the literature of the ancient Near East, emphasized in the epic by its fourfold repetition in close proximity. This is why the list has attracted much attention of scholars, who are particularly interested in the wisdom nature of the list, the ancestor worship in Ugarit and in the Ancient East, the family ritual and the responsibilities of children towards their parents, as well as the Sitz im Leben of the list, considered by some to be part of a larger and independent work, which has been included in the Aqhatu story because of loose connections with the topic of son and heir. As the current translation and interpretation efforts seem insufficient, the article proposes a new translation and a new attempt to highlight the meaning and the context of both individual duties and the entire list.

There are similarities between the way Targum Jonathan explains the Hebrew texts and the way the New Testament authors use the same texts. However, it is hard to identify the exact relationship between Targum Jonathan and the New Testament. Two examples of “Targumic” translations in the New Testament are explored in this article: Acts 13:21–22 and James 5:7–8. All in all, we can say that (1) it is hard to find identical forms of exegesis, although there are several similar cases and parallels; (2) we must do our best to describe similar cases as precise as possible, because there are both similarities and contradictions in all these cases; (3) there is no direct relationship between Targum Jonathan and the New Testament; but (4) they can be used cautiously as a means to better understand each other and (5) to better understand how Jewish authors – I include the New Testament Jewish followers of Jesus here – read and understood their Scriptures.

In the context of Russia’s confrontation with the West, especially after the beginning of the war against Ukraine on 24 February 2022, one can be surprised by the extent of support that President Putin enjoys in the Russian society. The author hypothesizes that this phenomenon cannot be explained with the help of political factors only. The article aims to demonstrate the ideological significance of Russian Orthodox tradition in the process of forming and reaffirming the Russian concept of state authority. After outlining the main issues related to the ideological legitimization of authority in Russia, two religiously rooted concepts are discussed: the “Third Rome” and “God-bearing.” These concepts also explain why the Russian Orthodox Church has almost unequivocally supported Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.

The chariot-shaped throne of God in the heavens (merkābāh) from Ezekiel’s visions (Ezek 1; 10) was the subject of the earliest Jewish mystical speculation. Hence, it is not surprising that there are numerous allusions and references to merkābāh mysticism in the Targum Jonathan to the Book of Ezekiel. This article analyzes Targum texts containing elements of merkābāh mysticism, namely the image of God sitting on the throne-chariot, the appearance and function of the four living beings, God’s glorification by celestial beings, the motif of the mystic ascending/rising to the heavens, the description of God’s glory filling the new Temple, and the motif of the new Jerusalem as a representation of the heavenly city.

The main purpose of this article is to portray King David as a prophet in the Targum Jonathan to the Books of Samuel. We first analyze the question where and how David’s prophetic character is shown implicitly in the texts of the Hebrew Bible. We also ponder when the concept of David as a prophet was born. Against this background, the paper analyzes the pericopes in the Targum Jonathan to the Books of Samuel that explicitly mention David as a prophet (TgJ 2 Sam 18:3; 22:1–51; 23:1–7). The targumist’s alteration of the Masoretic Text was intended not only to portray David as a prophet, but also to reinforce the authority and stature of his statements.

Bioart or transgenic art is a new and rapidly developing form of artistic activity that uses genetic engineering techniques to create a new and unique form of life. The article explores the creation and manipulation of life through the examples of three types of transgenic art projects: works by Eduardo Kac, performance, and the creation of semi-living organisms. The main aim of the article is to present the phenomenon of bioart against the background of fundamental dogmatic truths concerning creation and man, and then to draw theological conclusions. The addressed issues concern interspecies boundaries, bioartists’ interference with life, and man’s place in the world. An analysis and reflection of this kind reveals the transcendental nature of life in terms of its creatureliness in relation to God, places fundamental truths at the forefront, refers to theological and biblical terminology, and shows theological anthropology as the most appropriate place to understand the essence of life.

Artykuł przedstawia nieznaną dotąd w piśmiennictwie naukowym tropowaną wersję najstarszej i najbardziej popularnej antyfony maryjnej, jaką jest Salve Regina, zanotowaną w jedynym dotychczas zidentyfikowanym w Polsce rękopiśmiennym psałterzu oliwetańskim. Teksty dodane do oryginalnej postaci tej antyfony, która w swej treści jest przyzywaniem orędownictwa Maryi, by wyjednała u Boga ludziom zbawienie, nazywają Ją Matką Kościoła, Panną łaskawą, Matką Boga i Gwiazdą morza. Tytuły te, stanowiąc litanijne zawołania do Najświętszej Maryi Panny, komentują Jej przymioty: łaskawość, litościwość i słodycz.
