Quantitative EEG Based on Direct Recording and Source Localization Estimation in Repetitive Hand Motor Activity 基于直接记录和源定位估计的手部重复运动定量脑电图

Electroencephalography (EEG) has been widely used in clinical practice as a tool to guide an efficient post-stroke functional recovery program and adjust the rehabilitation training program. EEG has some advantages in temporal resolution, portability, and relatively low cost. Motor-related brain activities can be quantified by measuring the mu rhythm’s event-related desynchronization (ERD), acquired from a direct surface EEG recording. The common problem of direct surface EEG is the crosstalk between brain regions that are unrelated to the sensorimotor cortex. This problem can be solved through the EEG source localization technique. Essentially, the idea of source reconstruction is to estimate the primary cortical current densities during the given EEG recording across the head surface. The recent work aims to compare EEG power spectral density (PSD) analysis and source localization. Modification of exact-Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (eLORETA) was used as an EEG source localization method. EEG data recording was performed on a healthy, able-bodied male subject using 21 electrodes based on the case study’s 10-20 electrode placement system. The subject was asked to perform basic hand movements, i.e., grasping with and without hand load. Mu power was calculated from the electrodes that are located around the motor cortex (C3 and C4), while the average current density was calculated from the Brodmann Area (BA) 4 and 6, both during grasping and relaxation (baseline). The comparison showed that during grasping, there was a decrease in aver-age current density around BA-4 and BA-6 and a decrease in mu power at C3 and C4 when compared to baseline. These results indicate: (1) the activity of mu rhythm’s ERD around the sensorimotor cortex during hand movement; and (2) the possibility of using the EEG source localization method as an alternative biofeedback modality.

Antibiotic Resistance of Heterotrophic Bacteria Isolated from Drinking Water – from the Water Source to the Consumers’ Taps 饮用水中异养细菌的耐药性——从水源到消费者水龙头

The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotic resistance (ABR) phenotype of heterotrophic bacteria isolated from a Bulgarian drinking water supply system. The disc diffusion method of Kirby-Bauer was used in the bacterial isolates susceptibility testing toward 13 antibiotics from 7 classes. The ABR phenotype of 233 bacterial strains was determined and the influence of drinking water treatment and its transportation in the water supply network on the ABR prevalence was assessed. Among the isolates, the ABR incidence was low or medium, only tetracycline resistance was very rare, and no gentamicin resistance was detected; 42% of the isolates were resistant to one class of antibiotics, and 11% exhibited multiple resistance. Water chlorination has led to restructuring of the aquatic community and changes of the predominant ABR phenotypes. The ABR phenotype of the isolates differed depending on the drinking water sampling point demonstrating the local influence of the water supply network. Although there is no regulation of the ABR of drinking water, the data demonstrated prevalence of bacterial resistance to different antibiotics and need of a greater concern the microbiological water quality.

Design and Implementation of a Peristaltic Pump Based on an Air Bubble Sensor 基于气泡传感器的蠕动泵的设计与实现

Peristaltic pumps (PPs) are used to pump clean/sterile or exceptionally responsive liquids without tainting them. They are used in haemodialysis and heart-lung machines to circulate blood as a sidestep during medical procedures. The purpose of this research is to design and construct a PP which consists of a three-roller pump, a bubble sensor, a motor drive, a stepper motor, a microcontroller, and a safety unit. The safety unit functions by using the air bubble sensor, which stops the motor in case of bubble insertion. The performance is experimentally tested in terms of average sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, which are 99%, 99.55%, and 99.33%, respectively. The evaluation is based on the classification models of true positive (TP), false positive (FP), true negative (TN), and false negative (FN). The overall accuracy is about 98.9%, which indicates the high efficiency of the constructed mechanism.

Biological reactors are employed in industrial applications to break down organic waste. Here we consider the stability of an open loop CSTR, with a general growth rate function, having both a bacterial and substrate feed and a death rate. Reactors with a bacterial feed are important as every reactor after the first in a cascade will have both bacterial and substrate feeds. We show that stability of a critical point is related to the sign of the slope of the growth rate function, when no bacterial feed is present, and to the sign of the slope of a function, being the product of the growth rate function and a function involving the substrate and bacterial feed concentrations, when a bacterial feed is present.

Ageing and Neurodegeneration – The Role of Neurotransmitters’ Activity 衰老和神经退化——神经递质活动的作用

Disease and ageing are linked in many ways and especially by the mechanisms they share. For many diseases, the process of ageing is the main culprit leading to the pathology. Hence, it is crucial to understand the process of ageing, and its molecular and cellular mechanisms to have a better understanding and perspective on these age-related diseases. Neurodegenerative diseases are probably the most common types of age-related diseases. Their pathology is complex, however, changes in neurotransmitter levels are almost always present. These types of changes occur during ageing as well, therefore, exploring the link between those processes can give a clue for possible treatments. Monoamine oxidases (MAOs) are enzymes that break down monoamine neurotransmitters and their dysregulation has long been recorded in age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. There is strong evidence that modulating the MAOs’ expression and activity can be beneficial for patients suffering from these illnesses. Herein we critically analyze the literature and make associations among ageing, MAOs’ activity and neurotransmitters’ levels, thus highlighting their role in neurodegenerative diseases.

A Difference Equation Model of Infectious Disease 传染病的差分方程模型

In the context of so much uncertainty with coronavirus variants and official mandate based on seemingly exaggerated predictions of gloom from epidemiologists, it is appropriate to consider a revised model of relative simplicity, because there can be dangers in developing models which endeavour to account for too many variables. Predictions and projections from any such models have to be in the context of relevant contingencies. The model presented here is based on relatively simple second order difference equations. The context here is as important as the content in that in many Western counties where the narrative currently seems more important than the truth, and the results of empirical science are valued more as a shield for politicians than a sword for protection of citizens.

Generalized Net Model of Coyote Optimization Algorithm Coyote优化算法的广义网络模型

In the presented paper, the functioning of the coyote optimization algorithm (COA) is described using the apparatus of generalized nets (GNs). The COA is a population-based metaheuristic for optimization inspired by the Canis latrans species. Based on a Universal GN-model of population-based metaheuristics, а GN-model of COA is constructed by setting different characteristic functions of the GN-tokens. The presented GN-model successfully describes the considered metaheuristic algorithm, conducting basic steps and performing an optimal search.

The COA is a population-based metaheuristic for optimization inspired by the Canis latrans species. Based on a Universal GN-model of population-based metaheuristics, а GN-model of COA is constructed by setting different characteristic functions of the GN-tokens. Fabrication and Biocompatibility of Layer-by-layer Assembled Composite Graphene Oxide-polysaccharide Microcapsules 单层组装复合氧化石墨烯-多糖微胶囊的制备及其生物相容性

The present study is focused on the construction and characterization of the morphology and biocompatibility of polysaccharide multilayered microcapsules (PMC) composed of natural polyelectrolytes (chitosan/alginate/hyaluronic acid), and on the effect of graphene oxide (GO) incorporation in the polymer matrix. The insertion of GO in the polymer matrix is an innovative and still evolving strategy used to modify the properties of the polyelectrolyte microcapsules. We have fabricated a number of hybrid GO-polysaccharide multilayered capsules by layer-by-layer assembling technique onto a CaCO3 core, followed by core decomposition in mild conditions. Hybrid microcapsules with different composition were constructed by varying the number or localization of the incorporated GO-layers. It was found that the thickness of the hybrid microcapsules, evaluated by atomic force microscopy, decreases after incorporation of GO nanosheets in the polymer matrix. Analysis of the viability and proliferation of fibroblasts after incubation with hybrid PMC revealed pronounced concentration-dependent cytotoxic and antiproliferative effect. Based on the results, we can conclude that the hybrid multilayered microcapsules made of natural polysaccharides and graphene oxide could be used for biomedical applications.

A Novel Machine Learning Approach for Detection of Coronary Artery Disease Using Reduced Non-linear and Chaos Features 一种利用减少的非线性和混沌特征检测冠状动脉疾病的新型机器学习方法

In this research paper, authors present an automated system in this paper that integrates a ranking technique with Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Generalized Discriminant Analysis (GDA) and a 1-Norm Bidirectional Extreme Learning Machine (1-NBELM) to reliably classify normal and coronary artery disease groups. Twenty chaotic and non-linear attributes were hauling out from the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) signal to detect coronary artery disease groups. The HRV data for this study derived from a typical database of Normal Old (ELY), Young (YNG), and Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) people. Fisher, Wilcoxon and Bhattacharya were used to compute the rankings of attributes. GDA then turned the ranking features into a new feature. The Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel was used to transfer original features to a high-dimensional feature space in GDA and PCA, and then it was deployed to 1-NBELM, which utilized the sigmoidal or multiquadric non-linear activation. Numerical experiments were performed on the combination of database sets as Young-ELY, Healthy-CAD, and Healthy ELY-CAD subjects. The numerical results show that ROC with GDA and 1-NBELM approach achieved an accuracy of 98.12±0.14, 96.21±0.12 and 99.87±0.28 for Young-CAD, Young-ELY and Healthy ELY-CAD groups with the use of sigmoidal and multiquadric activation function. The Fisher with GDA and 1-NBELM and Bhattacharya with GDA and 1-Norm Extreme Learning Machine (1-NELM) approach achieved an accuracy of 99.98±0.21 for all databases.

Physiological Responses of the Roots of 16 Camellia Oleifera Varieties to Aluminum Stress and Screening of Aluminum-tolerant Genotypes 16个油茶品种根系对铝胁迫的生理响应及耐铝基因型的筛选

Targeting 16 varieties of Camellia oleifera planted in different regions, this paper explores the influence of aluminum (Al) stress over several physiological indices, namely, root activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content, proline content, and soluble sugar content and evaluates the overall Al tolerance of each variety. The purpose is to identify the difference between different C. oleifera varieties in physiological indices under Al stress, and to screen the varieties with relatively strong Al tolerance. The results show that: Al stress lowered the root activity and SOD activity, while enhancing MDA content, H2O2 content, proline content, soluble sugar content, and Al content. But the physiological indices of different C. oleifera varieties changed by vastly different amplitudes under Al stress. The variation amplitudes of root activity, MDA content, SOD activity, H2O2 content, proline content, soluble sugar content, and Al content were -47.06%-42.86%, 12.50%-133.33%,-8.33%%-26.28%, 11.11%-71.88%, 76.47%-420.00%, 4.97%-56.41%, and 23.43%-101.12%, respectively. Furthermore, the Al tolerance coefficients of the 16 C. oleifera varieties were analyzed comprehensively by membership functions. The results show that C. oleifera ‘Huajin’, C. oleifera ‘Huashuo’, and C. oleifera ‘Huaxin’ have relatively strong Al tolerance, while C. oleifera ‘Ganyou No.2’, C. oleifera ‘Ganxing No.48’, and C. oleifera ‘Ganzhou No.70’ have relatively weak Al tolerance.
