The aim of this study was to determine if the combination of active (exercise) and passive warm-up (thermal blanket) generates an increase in the number of deep squat repetitions compared to only active warm-up. Ten physically active and apparently healthy subjects (26.2 ± 5.9 years of age) were recruited for the study. Four sessions, with three-days intervals were performed. In the first session the maximum weight in deep squat was estimated (Brzycki’s formula), the second, third and fourth sessionsperformed the greatest number of deep squat repetitions with 85% maximum repetition (to exhaustion or even losing the technique). Before each condition, subjects were randomly assigned to one of three different conditions: active warm-up (CAct) traditional warm-up plus five minutes sitting, active warm-up plus placebo (CAct+P) traditional warm-up plus five minutes sitting with thermal blanket placed on the legs and combined warm-up (CCom) traditional warm-up plus five minutes with a thermal blanket placed on the legs. No differences (p >0.05) were found between CAct (8.6 ± 1.8 reps) and CAct+P (8.7 ± 1.6 reps) conditions in the number of squats performed. However, the CCom condition (11.1 ± 2.0 reps; p = 0.001; d = -2.107) was more effective compared to CAct (8.6 ± 1.8 reps) and CAct+P (8.7 ± 1.6 reps). A combination of active and passive heating (thermal blanket), increases the number of repetitions of deep squats in physically active young people.

Introduction: The relation of a biological variable to body mass is typically characterized by an allometric scaling law. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between oxygen consumption (VO2max), as a parameter of aerobic exercise performance, and body composition in rugby players. Material and method: The sample included one hundred and seven males of the Spanish rugby team. Age: 25.1 ± 3.4 years; body mass (BM): 89.8 ± 11.7 kg, height: 182.4 ± 6.5 cm; 52 backs (BR) and 55 forwards (FR). Maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max, l.min-1) was measured during treadmill exercise test with progressive workload. Anthropometrical measurements were performed to estimate the fat-free mass (FFM) and muscle mass (MM). The allometric exponent “b” was determined from equation y = a * xb; where “y” is VO2max and, “x” is the corresponding mass (BM, FFM or MM) and “a” is one constant. Results: The VO2max was 4.87 ± 0.56 l.min-1, BR vs FR, 4.67 ± 0.48 l.min-1 vs 5.06 ± 0.06 l.min-1; FFM: 77.5±7.7 kg, 73.5±7 kg vs 81.3±6.3 kg; and MM: 52.9±6.5 kg, 49.6±5.6 kg vs 56.1±5.8 kg. The allometric exponents (p <0.0001; R2 = 0.4) were: 0.58 for BM (95% CI: 0.45 - 0.72); 0.71 for FFM (95% CI: 0.53 - 0.90); and 0.58 for MM (95% CI: 0.43 - 0.73). Significant differences (p <0.0001) were found BR vs FR according to their anthropometric characteristics and VO2max with respect to BM and MM without allometric scaling. While the VO2max indexed by means of allometric scaling was similar between BR and FR. Conclusions: In comparative studies, the VO2max should be expressed proportional to the 0.58 power of body mass or related to FFM in order to take into account the variability in of body composition in rugby players.

The number of variables that influence the success of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is so high that an in-depth analysis of the problem can only be carried out through numerical tools. Once the diameter of the substitute plasty and the interference screw has been chosen for a given patient, one of the main concerns of the surgeon is to find the most suitable diameter of the tibial tunnel for its fixation. In this work, a finite element model was developed in order to simulate both the reconstruction and the subsequent rehabilitation of the ACL at its tibial insertion. For the simulation, the chosen tendon and screw diameters were 4 mm and 7 mm, respectively, while diameters of 7, 8, 9, and 10 mm were tested for the tibial tunnel. The parameters of the behavior models of the different materials (screw, bone and tendon) were obtained through experimental tests. The results obtained show that, as the diameter of the tunnel decreases, the compressive stress over the plasty will increase (theoretical objective of the fixation), but the deformation induced on the trabecular bone also increases, which can trigger its failure. For this reason, the maximum values of the interferential pressure must be limited to those strictly necessary to ensure that the reconstruction is properly done, that is, that it prevents the tendon from slipping in the tunnel during the rehabilitation process. The simulation of the rehabilitation process was done by pulling the already fixed tendon in the femoral direction in order to extract it. It was obtained that the most suitable diameter of the tibial tunnel for the chosen plasty-screw assembly is 8 mm, since it provides a suitable subjection without high values of deformation in trabecular bone, that is, no damage in this part of the bone.

Introduction: Due to demographic changes in fertility and mortality, it is predicted that in 2050 the proportion of the world population aged 60 and over will increase from 11% to 22%. Objective: To analyze the effects of high-intensity interval training in healthy older adults. Material and method: A bibliographic search was carried out in the following Pubmed, Scielo and ScienceDirect databases, using the Boolean terms High-intensity interval excercise OR High-intensity interval training OR high intensity interval activity AND aged OR older adult OR elderly. The PICoR strategy was used to define eligibility criteria (P) Healthy Older Adults, (I) Use High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), (C) be subjected to evaluation using the PEDRO scale and obtain a score equal to or greater than 6 points, (O) effect of high-intensity interval training in Adults Healthy elderly (S) studies with control groups or other interventions, published between the years 2016 to 2021. Results: 1.516 articles were identified, but only those that met the inclusion criteria (7 studies) were included. Significant improvements in sleep quality, fatigue, and body composition were obtained by combining HIIT training with nutritional support. Other improvements were obtained in strength, anabolic hormones, blood lipids, VO2max, exercise tolerance, and systolic BP using only HIIT training. Conclusion: The adapted HIIT training is applicable to healthy older adults and causes significant improvements in this age group.

Introduction: Several international sports federations have implemented a standardized injury registration system during their championships. However, very few studies have included athletes with disabilities during major competitions, apart from the Paralympic Games. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the rate and characteristics of illnesses and injuries during the 2021 South America Wheelchair Basketball Championships. Material and method: The coaching staff of the 11 participating teams (a total of 129 players) were asked to report daily all the health problems that have occurred and their characteristics in a standardized form. Prevalence and incidence rates were calculated. Results: In this study 108 health problems were reported, equivalent to 83.7 per 100 players [95% CI: 67.9-99.5], with 8 timeloss health problems (6.2 per 100 players [95% CI: 1.9-10.5]) and a total of 74 medical attention injuries (57.4 per 100 players [95% CI:44.3-70.4]). Were reported 15 diseases, and the most affected organ systems were ophthalmologic, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary. More injuries were recorded during matches (n=43). The most affected regions were shoulder/clavicle (24.7%), hand/fingers (23.7%) and neck/cervical spine (12.9%). The most frequent conditions were muscle contractures/cramps (32.2%), and the predominant mechanism was overuse (53.8%). 2.2% of concussions produced during training were reported. Most of the recorded events were without time loss and with return to full participation between zero and one day. Conclusion: Monitoring of health problems during competitions is essential to determine sport-specific injury risk factors, and a complex approach should be implemented for the recognition of their characteristics in wheelchair basketball players. In this way, adequate preventive measures can be developed.

Introduction: It is proposed that the use of the foam roller (FR) in the sports field can be a good complement to optimize the acute improvement of range of motion and to cause an analgesic effect, however, its use in warm-up to improve neuromuscular variables such as vertical jump is controversial in athletes. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review was to analyze the effects of FR on jumping ability in athletes. Material and method: A comprehensive, exhaustive, and structured search was carried out following PRISMA recommendations in the following databases: Pubmed/MEDLINE, Cochrane, Scopus, Sciencedirect and Web of Science. The studies that met the inclusion criteria were assessed for their methodological quality using the PEDro scale. Results: A total of 262 records were found in the study identification phase. In the screening phase, duplicates were eliminated, and the studies were filtered by selecting the title, abstract and keywords, obtaining 47 references as a result. A total of 18 studies were analyzed in full text, 12 of which were excluded. Therefore, the total number of studies that met all the selection criteria was six. Conclusions: The selected studies show that the application of RF is a technique that contributes to increasing the performance of jumping capacity in athletes and its effect can last up to 10 minutes after its application. However, protocols and duration times should be standardized to maximize results.

Introduction: Each development stage of the healthcare system and medicine is associated not only with the emergence of new integrated areas of knowledge, but also with radical changes in the technology of the doctor’s work with the patient, algorithms, methods for collecting, processing information, and making decisions. Also, many postulates need revision, activation of existing reserves, certain concepts also require a new interpretation. Objective: To form a high-quality medical model for the rehabilitation of highly qualified athletes. Material and method: The paper proposes a model for constructing a quality assessment of rehabilitation of athletes based on probabilistic methods. The novelty of the study underlies the transition from a qualitative to a quantitative assessment of health, which has become a new direction in the assessment and management of health. Results: The authors present a model of a qualitative increase in the managerial process by the rehabilitation of highly qualified athletes. The paper proves that it is necessary to determine the ability to measure and express the basic properties of any organism in conditionally qualitative proportions – the ability to withstand various stressful effects and adverse environmental influences. Conclusion: The practical significance of the study is determined by the fact that it is necessary to search for evaluative health criteria, and in the individual’s ability to carry out biological and social functions. The perfection of these functions in humans can also be described quantitatively, by reserves of energy, plastic, and regulatory support of functions.

Introduction: The practice of physical activity (PA) triggers positive adaptations on health. Extracurricular sport activities represent a strategy to increase hours of PA. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of extracurricular PA on physical condition (PC), health-related quality of life (HRQoL), screen time, and academic level. Material and method: In collaboration with three educational centers of Soria, the participants of the study completed several validated questionnaires related to PA information and lifestyle. Different physical tests were conducted to assess pupils’ PC and the centers provided information related to academics. Result: A total of 199 students (51.3% females), mean age 9.9 (standard deviation [ED] 1.4) years, were included in the study. Average weekly of PA hours was 3.3 (DE 1.6), and 51.3% of the pupils performed extracurricular sport activities. The results of the study showed statistically differences (P <0.05) on body mass index, screening time, and academic records between those pupils that performed extracurricular sport activities and those that did not perform any extracurricular activity. We observed a moderate negative correlation between weekly PA hours and screen time (r = -0.46, P <0.001) and a moderate strong positive correlation for academic records (r=0.56, P <0.001). The multivariate logistic regression model revealed that boys had a higher likelihood (odds ratio [OR] 3.59, confidence interval [CI] 95% 1.17-11.05) of practicing extracurricular sport activities compared to girls. Moreover, practicing extracurricular sport activities was significantly associated with lower screen time (OR 0.68, CI 95% 0.57-1.81) and better performance on academics (OR 3.63, CI 95% 2.07-6.37). Conclusion: Our results reinforce the need to develop strategies for the promotion and management of environments that promote extracurricular sport activities.
