This research highlights the critical role of blockchain technology in bolstering consumer trust for merchants through its application in traceability labels. The dual-method approach contributes a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Qualitative research through in-depth interviews aims to explore consumer expectations when scanning QR codes on product labels. Investigating factors such as evaluation of previous buyer, traceability labels, perceived product quality, and trust in products, the study employs a quantitative approach, collecting 300 valid data points via an online survey. The data undergoes reliability analysis using SmartPLS software, leading to the construction of a model assessing the impact of blockchain on brand trust in traceability labels. Findings serve as a reference for future investigations into various traceability labels and their effects on customer trust. The study underscores the practical implications of integrating blockchain technology into traceability systems to enhance consumer trust, providing valuable insights for both scholars and practitioners in the field.

Heterogeneity within family firms has emerged as a pivotal area of research interest. This special edition of The Journal of High Technology Management Research makes a significant contribution to the existing body of knowledge on the diversity found within family-run enterprises, with a specific emphasis on the variances in governance and management structures.

In this introductory piece, the proposition is put forth that family governance, encompassing both ownership and management, alongside the decisions guiding governance practices, plays a pivotal role in driving diversity within family businesses. This exploration delves into multiple facets of heterogeneity within family firms. The subsequent content of this issue comprises four studies that illuminate the impact of governance on diverse aspects, including the intergenerational transmission of knowledge, innovation in products and processes, strategic maneuvers, and the distinctive governance structures prevalent in Latin American family businesses.

Furthermore, this discourse extends beyond the findings presented in these studies by delving into uncharted realms of research, focusing on the disparities evident in the contextual settings and governance mechanisms adopted by different family firms.

This paper examines the effects of ownership property on the relationship between IT investment and corporate performance of Chinese listed companies. Previous studies focused on the relationship between IT investment and firm performance. Few studies focused on the factors that affect the relationship. Based on the resource-based view and information asymmetry theory, this paper takes all listed companies in China from 2012 to 2018 as the research sample. We find that IT investment has a significant positive correlation with corporate performance and the ownership property has a negative moderating effect on the positive correlation between IT investment and company performance. We address endogeneity concerns with model regressions and fixed effect model. Finally, using the company performance data with a lag of one period for robustness testing, the results are robust.

Family firms (FFs) have unique governance characteristics regarding their Boards of Directors (BoDs) and have been found to behave differently than other organizations due to the involvement of the controlling families. While cultural and institutional contexts have been suggested to influence the way companies are governed, most research on governance and BoDs in FFs (that results in theory development and prescription of practices) has been conducted in the institutional context of developed economies. Consequently, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the governance and BoDs of FFs in developing regions such as Latin America.

In order to close this gap, this study reviews the literature regarding business governance and BoDs of FFs in Latin America and compares it with the knowledge coming from developed economies. It also detects the most salient topics that attracts the undivided attention of researchers in Latin America: rights expropriation, business groups and interlocking of directors. Furthermore, this paper proposes a model that explains the salience of these topics based on the institutional domains and cultural context shaping corporate governance and characterizes each of its key elements (capital, management/labor, and State) in the context of Latin America. Finally, fruitful directions for further research are suggested.

Drawing on the entrepreneurial theory of the firm with dispersed knowledge, together with fundamental uncertainty, we examine what we label as heterogenous expectations through board members' imaginative faculties. Specifically, we unpack how outside board members construct heterogeneity, and how heterogenous expectations affect the level of competitive moves in new high-tech firms. We hypothesize and find that family funding positively moderates the relationship between board heterogeneity and competitive moves, although family sponsorship in the form of funding has a direct negative effect. Implications for the entrepreneurial theory of the firm and its relevance to practice are discussed.

With this study, we attempt to understand how emotions influence the intergenerational transfer of knowledge in family businesses from the perspective of emotional heterogeneity. We use a qualitative methodology of multiple case studies to comprehensively address theissue. The results indicate that emotions influence knowledge transmission and learning, sotransmission is more effective in Enmeshed and Balanced family businesses than in Disengaged ones.

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in developing economies still face a number of obstacles that prevent them from adopting digital technologies. In contrast, SMEs have achieved greater success in emerging markets. Due to its potential benefits for numerous businesses, machine learning (ML) has become a hot topic in recent years. Particularly a few major organizations, for example, Amazon, Google and Microsoft have shown a few effective cases on coordinating simulated intelligence capacity in their own organizations. This research suggests a fresh method for bettering private companies by combining large-scale data analysis with artificial intelligence and enhanced safety measures. Here, cloud edge administration with task planning using a dynamic joined real channel Kubernetes obstruction task scheduler improves business for the executives. Then, the organization's security is bolstered by a form of differential encryption on the blockchain that takes into account the need for security. We also propose assigning new jobs to the load node with the lightest workload. Experiments show that our strategy shortens job completion times and distributes work evenly across edge nodes. The experimental investigation is conducted in terms of latency, quality of service, energy efficiency, data integrity, and scalability. The proposed technique attained latency of 0.8354, QoS of 0.9395, energy efficiency of 0.9879, data integrity of 0.1189, scalability of 0.8400.

Student success is crucial to the process of building a Cross-border e-commerce (CBEC) talent development platform. Analysis of the important aspects impacting performance and performance prediction are carried out with the goal of enhancing students' academic outcomes. To better forecast student outcomes, a logistic regression model is used for factor analysis, and a penalty function is implemented. Parameters are reconciled using K-fold cross-validation, and then estimated using the coordinate descent technique. Model performance validation findings indicated that the Area Under the curve (AUC) for the minimax concave penalty (MCP) and smoothlyclippedabsolutedeviation(SCAD) penalized logistic regression models were 0.772 and 0.771, respectively. Both the MCP and SCAD penalized logistic regression models have overall accuracies of 0.738 and 0.739, respectively. Researchers found that for MCP, the correlation coefficient was 0.99949, and for SCAD, it was 0.99958, between the projected value and the anticipated value of students' performance. Due to their superior prediction accuracy, the MCP and SCAD penalized logistic regression models may be used as analytical tools in the development of the CBEC talent training platform.

In this study, the effects of perceived suitability, perceived consistency and perceived effectiveness on entrepreneurship intention were investigated. In addition, the effect of entrepreneurship education on entrepreneurship intention was investigated. For this purpose, data were collected from 377 students studying in the field of tourism. Data were analyzed with structural equation model. As a result of the study, it was found that perceived consistency and perceived effectiveness significantly affect entrepreneurship intention. However, perceived suitability, perceived consistency and entrepreneurial intent have been shown to differ significantly between students who previously have worked in a workplace and those who have not. The fact that the attitude of entrepreneurship and education has an impact on the education of entrepreneurs needed by the tourism sector makes this research different. As a result of the analysis, it was found that perceived suitability, perceived consistency and entrepreneurial intention differ significantly between those who have worked before and those who have not.

How retaining different inside directors on the board influences R&D-intensity: An extension of agency-theory applied to the high-tech sectors

Agency theory views board independence, retaining a high fraction of outside directors, as a hallmark of effective corporate governance. Consequently, many boards have become so “independent” that over 50% of S&P 1500 firms only have one inside director, the ‘lone-CEO’. A small but quickly growing body of ‘pro-insider’ research in agency theory stresses the value of retaining a few additional inside directors to ensure that outside directors are better informed about R&D investments, and to help guide the CEO's long-term technology strategy. We extend agency theory by showing how and why different executive roles, namely the CEO, CTO, and CFO result in contradictory motivations towards R&D investments, due to each inside director's unique resource dependency with key stakeholders. Specifically, we argue that a conflict exists between the CTO's strategic control role and the CFO's financial control role and that the conflict has contrasting consequences for R&D investments. We use panel data analysis to test our theory on a sample of 390 S&P 1500 firms from the high-tech industries, over the period 2002–2015. We find that R&D-intensity increases significantly when a CEO is accompanied by a CTO inside director. Conversely, we find that R&D-intensity substantially decreases when a CEO is joined with a CFO inside director. In fact, a lone-CEO only board is associated with a higher R&D-intensity than a board with both the CEO and CFO. Therefore, whether the CTO or CFO accompanies the CEO on the board matters for preserving R&D expenditure.
