The exodus of young people represents one of the key issues for the survival of Croatian rural areas in the demographic sense, but also, consequentially, in the economic, social, cultural, political and every other aspect. The decrease in the number of young people among the rural population is visible in the senilization of the rural areas, as well as deagrarization, and overall deruralization, and a continued decline of rural areas as places of life and work. Considering that the young population is mostly leaving the rural areas because of education and employ-ment, especially in sectors that employ the higher educated, the aim of this article is to examine the push and pull factors for returning or moving to the rural areas from the perspective of the Croatian young higher educated population. This article brings the results from the quantitative empirical study conducted in 2020 using the method of online questionnaire on the convenient sample of N=582 students from six faculties of the University of Zagreb, which encompassed all major scientific and art fields. The students were asked about their perception of the advantages and disadvantages of living in rural areas, as well as about their desire for moving or returning to the rural areas after finishing their education, and the reasons why. They were also asked about specific elements of infrastructure that were shown in previous research as an important factor in their decision to return or move to rural areas. Finally, the responses were correlated with their socio-demo-graphic characteristics. The results show that 40% of students want to return/move to rural areas, with over half of students (55%) who come from rural areas, and significantly less those from urban areas, who prefer to stay in the cities. In order to attract the higher educated young population to rural areas, the key is to improve communal and traffic infrastructure, as well as provide more op-portunities for them to work in their professions, primarily by enabling better traffic connec-tion with neighbouring cities in which they plan to work. Regarding work in agriculture, they feel that financial support, especially for urban young people who do not have family farms and existing infrastructure to rely on, would make their beginnings in agriculture easier.

The aim of this paper was to explore the symbolic meanings and experience of life within Dubrovnik’s historic core. Dubrovnik’s historic core has a difference in meaning compared to other cities’ parts, and is today recognized as a popular tourist destination. The experience of living within Dubrovnik’s old core was examined on the example of the local community – the study included 9 participants who were born and are still living inside the historic core. As part of this research, only qualitative methodology was used, in two phases. In the first phase of the research, the technique of narrative urbanism was used - collecting data through a conversa-tion and walking around specific localities within the core, through which we were guided by the participants themselves. In the second phase of the study, the technique of semi-structured interview on the same sample of the local community was applied. The main findings suggest that the main attraction of life is the availability of different contents and the ambiental dis-tinctiveness of the historic core. Nevertheless, it appears that the local community is becoming a victim of their own history and culture, through examples of the usurpation of everyday life and the perception of life in disappearance. The specific orientation of this research as well as the statements of the participants can serve as a warning and starting point in identifying the desirable transformational possibilities of Dubrovnik’s historic core with its dual role – as a tourist destination and a desirable place of living. However, a more detailed analysis suggests that the identity of the local community is not static, and that is realized through two comple-mentary categories: the category of local community and host community.

This paper provides empirical insights about spatial categories of places and non-places from the experiential perspective of participants of two focus groups examined in 2020. Research has shown that the Bowling Club in the HV Zrinski Home in Karlovac corresponds to the idea of place, while McDonald’s reflected the characteristics of non-place in accordance with the views of the authors Relph and Augé, which represented the basic conceptual framework of this paper. Participants portrayed the Bowling Club as a place of personal and communal significance, with which they have emotionally connected at the level of memories, activities and roles, describing it as a home where they feel belonging, safe and relaxed, that is, as insid-ers. McDonald’s, on the other hand, is addressed through the absence of deeper meanings and memories and minimal social relationships, confirming the non-place of an impersonal category in which participants function as outsiders. At the same time, participants’ critical statements surpassed the ideal-type conceptualizations of researched (non)places and pointed to the trend of virtualization of space due to McDonald’s flexible implementation of new technologies by switching to online food delivery services during the COVID-19 pandemic. In accordance with the highlighted findings, this paper has actualized a less researched topic in sociology and social sciences, pointing to the need for its further in-depth exploration with reference to more modern theoretical approaches.
