The Begonia diversity of the northern arm of Sulawesi and the adjacent Sangihe Talaud Islands, Indonesia, is reassessed, and distribution maps, proposed IUCN conservation category categories, and an identification key to 22 recognised species are presented. Three new species, namely Begonia kinhoi, B. pitopangii and B. sojolensis, are described and photographs provided. Newly available material allowed a reassessment of the morphological variability of several species that were originally described from very limited material (Begonia carnosa, B. cuneatifolia, B. gemella, B. hispidissima, B. masarangensis, B. mendumiae and B. strachwitzii), and revised descriptions and photographs of these species are provided. Begonia heteroclinis is reduced to synonomy of B. carnosa, and both names are lectotypified. Additionally, recircumscription and revised  synonymy of Begonia rieckei are presented.

A new species of Begonia sect. Ruizopavonia A.DC., B. pseudodendron Moonlight & Á.J.Pérez, is described from the western slopes of the Andes in the Colombian Department of Nariño and the Ecuadorian Province of Carchi. The new species is diagnosed against Begonia cymbalifera L.B.Sm. & B.G.Schub. and compared with other similar species. We also provide photographs, a distribution map, and an IUCN conservation assessment for the new species, which is classified as Endangered (EN) due to habitat destruction.

Within the Pantabangan–Carranglan Watershed Forest Reserve in Nueva Ecija, a small population of an inconspicuous Begonia was encountered. After thorough investigation, it is described here as a new Philippine Begonia species in sect. Petermannia. The new species, Begonia naemma Y.P.Ang, Aumentado & Magtoto, is distinguished from the allied species B. polyclada C.I Peng, C.W.Lin & Rubite by its larger leaves, leaf adaxially sparsely hirsute between the veins, more numerous stamens, and larger ovary wings that are ovate to oblong. Based on IUCN criteria, Begonia naemma is designated as Endangered (EN). A comprehensive description and illustration of Begonia naemma are provided.

COMPARATIVE TRANSCRIPTOME ANALYSIS OF TWO CLOSELY RELATED BEGONIA SPECIES REVEALS DIVERGENT PATTERNS IN KEY LIGHT-REGULATED PATHWAYS 两种密切相关的秋海棠物种的比较转录组分析揭示了关键光调节通路的不同模式

Begonia is one of the most diverse angiosperm genera, comprising more than 2000 described species. The wide morphological and ecological range represented in the genus makes it a good model for studying the generation and maintenance of diversity. Previous research has shown that strong population structure, poor seed dispersal, and high levels of drift contribute to high rates of speciation and morphological variation. In the present study, we used transcriptomics to compare two closely related but morphologically and ecologically divergent species, Begonia conchifolia A.Dietr. and B. plebeja Liebm., to identify genes putatively involved in ecological divergence. Using publicly available multitissue RNA-seq data, we asked what genetic pathways show species-specific patterns of divergence between our two study species. The results of differential expression and gene ontology enrichment analyses showed species-specific enrichment of light-regulated functions in Begonia plebeja. Concomitant enrichment of ethylene and jasmonate pathways in Begonia plebeja indicate an increased shade avoidance response, suggesting that light availability may be a key factor in the divergent adaptation of B. conchifolia and B. plebeja.

Hybrid capture with baits has proven to be a rich source of genetic data for many genera. The depth of information provided allows resolution of rapid radiations and of deep phylogenetic patterns. Retrieved data can also be used for population genetic studies and analysis of functional genetic diversity. To gain a better understanding of the evolutionary patterns across this large, diverse and fascinating genus through phylogenetics, population genetics and sequence analysis, we have designed and tested a set of 1239 baits covering low copy number and functionally annotated genes involved in shade adaptation and development and genetically linked to key traits. We demonstrate successful recovery of sequence data from species across Begonia and from fresh, silica-dried and older herbarium material.

Begonia menchunaensis P.Gyeltshen & M.Hughes is described from the cool broadleaved forest of Punakha District in Bhutan. It is assigned to Begonia sect. Diploclinium because it has a tuberous habit and bifid placentae, and is allied to B. picta. Based on its restricted distribution, Begonia menchunaensis is assessed as Critically Endangered under the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. Begonia picta, B. rex, B. roxburghii and B. xanthina are reported as new records for Bhutan.

The new species Ouratea yamamotoana (Ochnaceae) from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot is described and illustrated. The new species resembles Ouratea camposportoi, from which it differs by the persistent stipules, chartaceous leaves with cordate or slightly auriculate base, flowers with smaller pedicels, spathulate or elliptic petals, longer gynophore, and fruit with a subterete to clavate carpophore. It is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) using IUCN Red List criteria and highlights the threats to the highly endemic plant diversity of the Atlantic Forest.
