ISDB (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting) is a total digital broadcasting system, which can provide versatile services on the basis of digital transmission technology. Examples of promising ISDB services are HDTV (high definition television), a variety of multimedia information and indexes. These services are transmitted using digital signals constructed with the MPEG-2 multiplexing scheme. ISTV (Integrated Services Television) has been developed as an ISDB receiver and experiments have been carried out to investigate services and suitable navigation functions of ISDB receivers. This paper describes the basic concepts of ISDB and ISTV, then discusses services and navigation in ISDB. A menu display function and an EPG display function are powerful navigation tools in ISTV. Examples of ISTV navigation are shown, and a theme for further study is reported.

A new VCR for the digital broadcasting systems based on the D-VHS format has been developed. It can record digital bit stream data from the digital broadcasting receiver in addition to the current VHS analog recording, using a D-VHS tape which contains the same material as a S-VHS tape.

A direct-sequence CDMA (DS-CDMA) mobile radio personal communication system operating over an indoor, Rician fading channel employing differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation with different chip waveforms is investigated. The performance evaluation in terms of bit error probability considers a star network architecture with a variety of spreading chip waveforms. The computation results show that non-rectangular chip waveforms have more desirable, lower intersymbol interference and multiple-access interference, rendering a lower bit error rate indoor communication system.

A 1 GHz CMOS down-conversion mixer is described. The mixer is of differential architecture where the common-mode feedback circuit is eliminated by employing robust loads. Cascode stages are used to reduce the LO-to-RF feedthrough which is measured to be -79 dB. A prototype mixer was implemented in a standard 0.8 /spl mu/m CMOS process and consumes 7.3 mW at 3.3 V supply. The power conversion gain is -0.8 dB. The noise figure and the input IP3 are 19 dB and 0.6 dBm, respectively.

The monitoring purpose of the broadcast transmission system is to provide a means of determining how the transmission system is performing and where a fault or abnormal condition exists in the transmission chain. This paper presents the monitoring system for the digital DBS (direct broadcast satellite). This paper describes the monitoring requirements relating to which signals need to be monitored, where to monitor in the transmission chain, and how often each signal needs to be monitored.

This paper proposes a new video editing system which is able to edit and process the video data on computers connected to the broadband computer network. The concept of this system and the necessary contents of the structured video are proposed. This paper also describes a method to detect the camera work from MPEG-2 encoded video data without decoding. In this algorithm, the four kinds of camera work such as fixed camera, panning, tilting and zooming are detected using the video data of 12 kinds of test pictures. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method, which can get over a 70 percent rate of correct detection.

By studying the MPEG-2 based output rate control strategy in detail, the mechanism of accurate bit-rate control and rational bit allocation is analyzed. To solve the difficulties of bit-rate control from the drastic changes of coded bits, a bit-rate control strategy under scene change is proposed.

Owing to technological advances in very large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuits, high-speed digital signal processing (DSP) chips become fast enough to allow for real-time implementation of hearing aid algorithms in units small enough to be wearable. In this paper, a body-worn type digital hearing aid (DHA) based on a dedicated DSP chip is developed. A fitting software running on a PC supported by the Win95 OS is also developed. The fitting protocol is based on the NAL-R procedure applied to eight frequency bands, but it is designed to support a curvilinear fitting to cope with the nonlinear perception of hearing-impaired listeners. Preliminary subjective tests regarding the speech intelligibility and perceived quality revealed that the new DHA could be of benefit to hearing aid users.
