A heterodyne spectrum analysis AO channelizer is proposed. The basic theory of heterodyne spectrum analysis is described, and an interferometric optical system and an instantaneous photodetector array are introduced. The methods for designing a local reference signal are discussed. Using this AO channelizer a large dynamic range (>50 dB), large number of channels (>100) and high frequency resolution (25 kHz) can be achieved.

Stimulated by the fascinating chaotic synchronization principle proposed by Pecora and Carroll (1991) chaotic communications have recently aroused much interest in the area of secure communications because of the stochastic and complicated behavior of chaotic signals. In this paper, coherent demodulation of chaos shift keying (CSK) using Lorenz-based chaotic circuits is proposed. We prove the synchronization effect in a simple way, and the allowable bit rate is assessed. Thereafter the transient is shortened to obtain higher bit rate. By considering the influence of channel noise on the dynamics of the receiver, the error performance of CSK is evaluated.

Telecommunications is experiencing a wireless revolution leading us to a world of personal communication services (PCS) which are expected to play a significant role in the future universal communication networks. CDMA is used to multiplex different services in a multimedia network where multiaccess interference is approximated as a Gaussian distribution. When Rayleigh fading is present in the channel, a RAKE receiver is employed to improve the performance. Power control for a single service network is adapted to incorporate multimedia requirements. Furthermore, various error control schemes based on Reed Solomon codes and convolutional codes are discussed taking account of the quality and delay constraints. Medium access control and the system capacity are also addressed.

There are various types of services on a telecommunication network. This paper examines several types of multimedia services and subscriber network architectures from the service nodes to the terminals on the B-ISDN network. We propose a conceptual services model that can be applied to several ITU-T classified multimedia services. Each service model presents its own service characteristics and network configuration. The transfer paths are discussed, as are subscriber network types such as copper, HFC, or FTTC.

In mobile satellite communication, Doppler frequency shift correction is one of the most important problems. This paper presents a new design method of signal waveforms for simplifying the estimation of the Doppler frequency shift. The proposed design method for transmission signal waveforms has three advantages: (1) an open loop technique is used for estimating the Doppler frequency shift at the receiving end; (2) the estimation of the Doppler frequency shift is simplified; and (3) the estimable range of the Doppler frequency shift exceeds the result presented by Simon and Divsalar (1989). If the transmission signal waveform belongs to the class of signal waveforms designed in this paper, the design of transmitter and receiver satisfy the matched criteria. Several examples of the design of transceivers are given by theoretical and numerical analysis.

In CDMA mobile communications the cross-correlation between signature codes yield multiaccess interference which will limit the system capacity. Multiuser diversity reception in a multipath fading environment is considered. We design a diversity reception scheme with equal gain combining of the multiuser detection outputs, and its performance for a Rayleigh fading channel is evaluated by computer simulation. The performance comparison is made among the conventional algorithm, the decorrelating algorithm and the maximum likelihood sequence detection algorithm for different combiners.

Pragmatic trellis-coded modulation (P-TCM) scheme uses the same single coder and decoder for various codes which have a performance comparable to that of Ungerboeck codes on a linear Gaussian channel. The performance on Rician fading and light shadowed Rician fading channels of a rate 2/3, 64-state P-TCM code is studied. Upper bounds, lower bounds and asymptotic approximation of bit error rate (BER) with both coherent detection and differential detection are estimated. Computer simulation results are also given. The results show that there are about a 3.4-5.2 dB coding gain of this code on the above mentioned channels at a BER=10/sup -3/.

Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) products are introduced in today's telecom network at several places. Network operators are confronted with the difficult problem of how to organize the cohabitation of the new broadband network elements with the existing traditional network elements offering speech and data services. Basically, there are two network options to this problem. A first solution is to adopt an overlay solution, thereby creating a separate broadband network and providing the necessary interfaces and service interworking functions towards the existing speech and data networks. A second solution exists in the extension of the existing investments to accommodate in an integrated way both broadband and narrowband services and proper interworking functions. The second method is proposed as the selected evolution scenario for the existing A1000 S12 narrowband exchanges. An overview of the basic steps in the evolution scenario is presented and the benefits of this approach compared to an overlay solution are discussed.

The paper is devoted to report on the experiments performed by the RACE BRAVE project in the field of traffic control. Motivation for the BRAVE experiments was based on the need to evolve, from a state of the art on traffic control mainly characterised by theoretical results, to a situation that considers experimental results. Advanced solutions such as fast resource management, statistical multiplexing based on large buffers, available bit rate service were implemented and experimented by the project. The infrastructure used for the experiments is reported in the paper, together with some of the experimental results. The BRAVE infrastructure and results are now used by some of the ACTS (Advanced Communication Technology and Services) projects, namely AMUSE, INSIGNIA and EXODUS.
