Objective: To determine if hypertension is associated with osteoporosis in female patients of Seguro Social de Salud (EsSalud) Hospital I in Trujillo. Materials and methods: An observational, analytical and cross-sectional study, which included 351 female patients treated in the Internal Medicine Unit of EsSalud Hospital I Florencia de Mora, Trujillo, from 2016 to 2019. According to the screening criteria, patients were divided into two groups—175 with hypertension and 176 without hypertension—to determine the number of patients with osteoporosis. The data was analyzed with Pearson’s chi-square test using IBM SPSS Statistics V26 to perform the statistical analysis and present the results in graphs and tables in Microsoft Excel Windows 10. Results: It was found that the prevalence of osteoporosis with hypertension accounted for 31.4 %, while that of osteoporosis without hypertension was 1.7 %. This shows that the prevalence of osteoporosis in women with hypertension is statistically significant ( p < 0.001) with respect to women without hypertension. Regarding the analysis of the intervening variables, age ( p < 0.001), cholesterol ( p < 0.001) and coffee ( p < 0.001) were statistically significant. Variables such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, sex, obesity, anemia, triglycerides and smoking were not statistically significant. Conclusions: Hypertension is associated with osteoporosis as well as with the intervening variables age, cholesterol and coffee, as they were statistically significant.

Objective: To determine the relationship between osteoarticular pain and depression in older adults treated in a geriatric hospital in Lima, Peru. Materials and methods: An observational and descriptive study. A sample of 74 older adults treated in the outpatient department of a geriatric hospital in Lima, Peru, in 2021 was selected. A survey was used as technique and a questionnaire as instrument. Using the IBM SPSS Statistics statistical software, a chi-square test was performed with a significance level of 5 %. Results: Concerning the older adults’ general characteristics, 51.35 % were over 70 years of age, 55.41 % were women, 60.81 % had secondary education and 86.49 % were married or cohabiting. Regarding the characteristics of pain, 32.43 % stated that the pain decreased when they were not alone, 20.27 % pointed out that the pain was more intense at home, 81.08 % had moderate pain and 64.86 % had experienced pain for more than six months. As for depression, 43.24 % dealt with mild depression and 29.73 % had persistent depression. The characteristics of osteoarticular pain associated with depression were the degree of pain ( p = 0.041) and duration of pain ( p = 0.024). Conclusions: Osteoarticular pain was significantly associated with depression in older adults treated in a geriatric hospital in Lima, Peru.

POEMS syndrome is a disease of unknown pathogenesis. The acronym stands for the disease’s main clinical manifestations: polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy and skin disorders. Recent studies suggest the association of genetic mutations with immunoglobulin λ. We report the case of a 56-year-old male patient with a 10-month clinical picture, whose initial signs and symptoms were lower limb edema and hypertrichosis, followed by gastrointestinal symptoms, inguinal lymphadenopathy and lower limb paresthesia. We emphasize the importance of this clinical case, given the limited reports of POEMS syndrome at the national level and no reported cases in the department of La Libertad, and the long time it takes to diagnose such disease.

Bullous systemic lupus erythematosus (BSLE) is a vesiculobullous disease mediated by autoantibodies in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Tense vesicles and bullae are seen on an edematous, erythematous and sometimes normal skin in any body region, including mucous membranes and non-photoexposed areas. This is the case of a 16-year-old male patient with lupus nephritis who, on the seventh day of hospitalization, presented multiple serous and hemorrhagic blisters on the face, trunk, abdomen and upper extremities. The histological study showed a subepidermal bullous dermatosis with numerous neutrophils.

Objective: To describe the socioeconomic characteristics of, the most frequent pathologies and symptoms of, and the subjective pain assessment by patients treated at a physical therapy and rehabilitation center located in the district of Villa El Salvador, Lima, Peru. Materials and methods: A descriptive, prospective and cross-sectional study conducted in 366 patients over 18 years of age, of both sexes, who attended their first physical therapy. Results: The patients reported moderate pain intensity in the pre-physical therapy and rehabilitation sessions assessment. Low back pain was the most frequent pathology, followed by neck pain and painful shoulder. Regarding the education level, most patients had secondary and technical education. Moreover, a statistical association was found between pain intensity and sex (p = 0.049), as well as between pain intensity and profession/occupation (p = 0.012). Conclusions: The patients who attended the physical therapy and rehabilitation service reported moderate pain before beginning their sessions. Based on the results of the socioeconomic characteristics, it is necessary to keep up preventive and promotional health measures to avoid possible risk factors that exacerbate musculoskeletal disorders which may interfere with patients’ future recovery and possible relapse.

Testicular cancer is the most common solid tumor in men between ages 15 and 29. It can metastasize through the hematogenous or lymphatic routes to different organs such as the lung and liver (common) and the stomach (uncommon). We present the case of a 30-year-old male patient with upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to two ulcers in the stomach body with histology of unspecified small-cell malignant neoplasm. CT scans showed a right testicular tumor with secondary implants in the brain, lung, liver and spleen. β-HCG (35,5354 mIU/mL), AFP (500 ng/mL) and LDH (1,669 IU/L) tests were conducted. A right radical orchiectomy was performed. It is concluded that this was a clinical stage IIIC primary germ cell tumor of the right testis due to liver, spleen, lung, gastric and brain metastases.
