ABSTRACT Psychodrama techniques adapted for first-episode schizophrenia patients are illustrated with examples of how mutual aid groups are utilized to enhance the recovery process. In keeping with the techniques of psychodrama first introduced by J.L Moreno, patients quickly become group members and work toward mutual assistance in reducing the trauma of the diagnosis and its accompanying symptoms and functioning challenges. The authors show how the techniques of warming up, doubling, mirroring, role playing, and role reversal can make an impact on the every-day lives of members. The authors have first-hand experience working with psychodrama, schizophrenia and mutual aid based groupwork.

ABSTRACT Research shows that social connectedness is decreasing and loneliness increasing in the United States, subsequently resulting in a health crisis due to the anxiety and depression these attributes can cause. There is evidence that clinicians have difficulty treating individuals experiencing social anxiety and there is need for intervention strategies that lower treatment barriers. There has been scant research recognizing the use of table-top role-playing games to incorporate when treating social anxiety. The current manuscript describes a year-long group using Dungeons and Dragons in a therapeutic setting and explores perceptions from participants who experienced this group. Core concepts of the model and lessons learned from the developers are described for clinicians who hope to incorporate such a model. Participants described increased confidence in social situations, particularly with boundaries or making mistakes. Secondly, the skills practiced in the game were transferred into real-world experiences. Implications for future research and limitations were described.

ABSTRACT This paper provides an overview of the interpersonal classroom model (ICM). The ICM was designed primarily for social work group practice courses. This paper describes the theoretical foundation for the ICM, outlines how educators can employ the ICM, designates five group leadership skills that students will focus on when completing a weekly evaluation survey, and provides an example of the ICM applied to an undergraduate group practice course. This paper concludes with considerations for educators to review prior to implementing the ICM approach.

ABSTRACT Younger women diagnosed with breast cancer express more psycho-emotional concerns than older women because younger women are facing problems with fertility, disruption to their young families, disruption to their careers, and lower libido during a time of higher sexual activity. Support groups create a place for younger women diagnosed with breast cancer to give and receive mutual aid. To meet the needs of younger women with breast cancer, an online support group was created by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program. A SPARC grant from the International Association of Social Work with Groups (IASWG) helped the program reduce technology barriers to the online group, and help the program promote the group to community partners. The author, in the role of the support group facilitator, created a comfortable and confidential group space by embracing the needs of the clients, including the need for a flexible virtual meeting space. The ongoing facilitation of the online group impacted the support services provided by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program, encouraging additional psychoeducational groups to be developed, and contributing to expanding online group services to meet the specific needs of all program clients when the program was forced to transition to online services due to the COVID-19 crisis striking the local community.

ABSTRACT This paper reflects the collective experiences of fourteen internationally based social group work educators who met weekly and virtually for seven months during the transition to online teaching necessitated by the coronavirus pandemic. The meetings functioned as a mutual aid support group sponsored by the International Association of Social Work with Groups (IASWG). The paper discusses the group’s perceptions of the essential components of effective online group work education. It begins with a review of the history of online social work education. It then outlines the key components instrumental in the planning and developing of engaged online group work classes. Topics include pre-course preparation, norm setting, and building community in the online classroom. Considerations related to the video conferencing platforms, course formats, activities, managing online fatigue, screen sharing, handling chat features, cameras, and break out rooms are interspersed throughout. The paper concludes with a discussion of the use of mutual aid groups as online teaching tools and highlights the online group work teaching experiences of two members in New Zealand and Namibia. Despite initial hesitancy to teach group work virtually, the authors recognize that this can be done effectively but requires additional planning and, ideally, peer and institutional support.

ABSTRACT This paper describes group and community intervention work with individuals currently or formerly experiencing homelessness to create mutual connection and support using art, poetry, stories, pop-up porches, and photobooks. The group and community intervention work was enhanced by International Association of Social Work with Groups (IASWG) SPARC endorsement and funding to create photobooks which served to visualize the life stories and accomplishments of persons identifying as currently or formerly homeless. The two-decade journey of the author’s work with individuals experiencing homelessness will be described to illustrate and celebrate how creative group and community interventions addressing homelessness (including photobooks) can connect individuals experiencing homelessness with people who have never experienced homelessness to facilitate group dialogue and mutual understanding.

ABSTRACT Psychodrama, sociometry, and group psychotherapy is an action-oriented form of therapy through which individuals (protagonists) act out scenes with support from a group facilitator (director) and group members (auxiliary). A traditional psychodrama group has three distinct stages: warm-up, action, and sharing. Psychodrama uses dramatic action to explore the concerns, hopes, and dreams of individuals and groups. The following narrative is a fictional depiction based on a composite of experiences that the authors have had.

ABSTRACT Bien dans mes baskets (BDMB) uses an after-school team sports program as a medium for social work with groups in a high school in Montreal (Quebec, Canada). BDMB is a long-time partner of Centre de recherche de Montréal sur les inégalités sociales, les discriminations et les pratiques alternatives de citoyenneté (CREMIS). This narrative essay stems from a process of collective knowledge-building combining sociology, social work theory, and clinical practice. Using methods inspired by group analysis, we met online with members of BDMB (three social workers and three volunteer coaches) to discuss how they adapted to the pandemic. In this essay, after describing how BDMB uses basketball as a medium for social work with groups, we will see how the program had to adjust in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, we will discuss the social and educational inequalities underscored by the current social and health crisis and analyze how BDMB, at its own scale, is able to address some of these.

BDMB is a long-time partner of Centre de recherche de Montréal sur les inégalités sociales, les discriminations et les pratiques alternatives de citoyenneté (CREMIS). This narrative essay stems from a process of collective knowledge-building combining sociology, social work theory, and clinical practice. Using methods inspired by group analysis, we met online with members of BDMB (three social workers and three volunteer coaches) to discuss how they adapted to the pandemic. In this essay, after describing how BDMB uses basketball as a medium for social work with groups, we will see how the program had to adjust in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, we will discuss the social and educational inequalities underscored by the current social and health crisis and analyze how BDMB, at its own scale, is able to address some of these.","PeriodicalId":39702,"journal":{"name":"Social Work with Groups","volume":"44 1","pages":"352 - 358"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01609513.2021.1908699","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45772715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
